Look, we're all for developers who consistently update their games with worthwhile content here at Push Square, but please, please don't go and break the foundations you've already laid down in the process. That's the problem Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on PlayStation 4 is facing right now as players repeatedly download gigantic patches only for the title to tell them that those same updates cannot be found on their consoles.
It means that some enthusiasts looking to take advantage of double XP across all modes quite literally can't play the game they purchased, including ourselves at the time of writing. On Thursday, update 1.13 was pushed to all PS4 systems. That's all well and good, except for the fact that you're not told you must trigger two further downloads by booting up the game itself and attempting to access the suite of multiplayer options. Doing so pushes two extra patches to the console -- weighing in at an absurd 25GB when put together.
It's incredibly frustrating, especially so when you've arranged to play a few rounds with your mates that night, but the cherry on top of this story is that there's a possibility you still won't be able to boot up multiplayer. There appears to be an issue with the Spec Ops pack PS4 players are told they must download which has lead to lost online ranks and corrupt data.
Of course, developer Infinity Ward is all over Twitter attempting to fix the sudden amount of issues that have come its way, with a community update issued yesterday stating that problems are being investigated. However, that hasn't been enough to stop the waves of abuse and criticism from flocking in like never before.
Have you been affected by this unfortunate chain of events? Remain civil in the comments below.

It sounds they should just undo the not sure if that’s possible though.
I enjoyed Modern Warfare but the file size was already way too big at launch. I dont see why its file is now way over RDR2.
@Danloaded It's closing in on 150GB with these latest updates. It's insane.
@LiamCroft thats pretty bad. I genuinely dont know why its needs that much. I know its a good looking game and has been adding content but RDR2 has aswel and thats a huge open world.
I don’t mind the patches but this is particularly bad when you hit the ‘check for updates’ button and it says it’s up to date. Then you load the game and are hit with 24GBs of downloads to do before you can play
150 gb is bonkers. It’s only going to get worse and worse and we aren’t anyway near making storage cheap enough to support games that size.
Ridiculous that this game is pretty much worth the space of 3 standard AAA games. COD developers are dreadful at compressing their files. Not that it would ever happen (especially with COD), but this is why I think developers should just make all the content first, and then release the game.
I have deleted the game a while ago, and this is the first time EVER in my gaming life that I will trade the game in for credit at a gaming shop.
To be honest I’ve played games that are worse then this and I still have them but really, the constant updating of this game, the campy multiplayer which I don’t like, the size of the game overall and the fact that you can not even deinstall the single player made me just not want to play game altogheter.
I like the gameplay loop of the new Call of Duty, this was my first COD experience since World at War. The multiplayer is really fun to play especially with friends BUT living where I do with a download speed that takes me a whole day to download the updates has ruined the experience for me.
At first I downloaded the main game, which is 100GB or so and didn't know that I had to install SP and Online + a few more packages separately.
I'm nagging, I'm genuinely curious to know why such a decision was made? why tear the game apart this bad and make things confusing?
And this new update is just the worst. I just went right back into playing God of War again.
Played this game once. Got trapped between an open door and wall, then the game auto saved... Ridiculous that you cant close doors in the game. Hopefully this is something they've sorted out in the update.
I feel the people with capped internet. You can eat into your bandwidth really quickly with all these patches.
I'm seriously considering deleting this game after this most recent patch.
The latest update for me keeps showing that i have new attachments available but there arent any and the green square wont go away. slightly annoying
this game is still raking in the money, so i guess there aint enough people with poor internet to make activision and iw care. what should have been done is to finish the 5hrs singleplayer and put that on disc. then make you download the online part, with a option to delete the singleplayer when you are done, and only load the online part. but in the digital always online age i guess that is to much to ask for.
it will be interesting to see how much Treyarch will f**k up their blackops5.
Everyone is laughing at Google Stadia but a friend of mine has it and he literally pressed a button on his phone and a new game was immediately available. Patched and all.
@Flurpsel did it look good?
I really enjoy the gameplaya lot in this new one it's smooth if a bit campy with some maps/players.
Games on PS5 will indeed become just as big and this is just the future coming to us. Might as well call your ISP for more bandwidth upgrade and a 5tb external HDD
I just installed GTA 5 which took well over an hour (disc copy), had to disconnect from the internet because five years on R* still haven't fixed the hung install bug, only to boot the game and find a 30gig patch that I assume is just online bloat I've got zero interest in ever playing. Roll on PS5 where we can hopefully just install the stuff we actually want to play.
Im not completely sure how it works but some games delete older patches too replace them with a new one cant they do that?
@Flurpsel But its still Stadia and you own nothing. 😆
My poor brother simply cannot play this game often because of these updates. He lives in the country where his internet is sold at 2Mbps down/500k up. Thats bits not bytes. It takes him weeks to download these patches. He even went as far to ship me his external hard drive to download the patches for him.....
@Deljo good enough for most people I think.
@Stocksy next gen will use SSD's so it actually should get better. Assets get reused on HDD's so they can be recovered quickly. I don't know the numbers or anything but Mark Cerny at PS said it should help devs reduce file size to only have to store each asset once, so I'm guessing it's significant if he bothered to highlight it.
PS5 downloads will also be configurable due to SSD's simplifying things. It's expected that, depending on the game, you can only have certain parts downloaded. I expect a game as big as CoD will take advantage of this and you will be able to delete Campaign files once you are done with Campaign, and only leave on MP and Spec Ops... or even just MP. That would save a ton of space.
I'm not understanding why my game keeps updating every other day. Can someone explain this because I don't get it I thought one update maybe once a month would be good but every other day now I'm starting to regret buying the game. You have no idea how many other games I took off my system just to put the game in it initially at the very beginning.
Why is this downloading constantly?? Every time I go to play I have to download the game and it takes 5 hours! Is there something I need to do to stop this!?
My game currently sits at 149gb not even rdr2 was that big had enough of the massive updates so going to delete to many other good things coming out this year to miss
So, I’m back to a PlayStation, my last one was amazingly a PS1, yes I’m that old lol. Anyhow, I had MW4 as part of bundle, it’s saying 84Gb patch after installing the disc, is that correct? I’ve left it downloading, about 40 hours! This is daft, I’ve gone back to my HP omen easier lol
30th April 2020 and after downloading the latest patch 2 days ago I still haven't played MW as it keeps crashing my ps4. if I'm lucky enough to actually get to the in game menu it jist boots me on whatever random in screen menu I'm on. this is outrageous for a game that cost me 55 quid less than a week ago.
does anyone know a fix or a measure I can take ? am I suing Activision or sony lol...but seriuz..
