What time does the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare open beta begin? What are the dates of the beta weekends? Infinity Ward's latest is about to kick off on PlayStation 4 with an open beta test, allowing players to trial the game's online multiplayer ahead of release. What are all the details? In this guide, we'll go through everything so you can stay in the know.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare open beta - dates and times
The Modern Warfare beta test takes place over two five-day "weekends" in September 2019. It gets a little complicated, as PS4 users get more time with the beta than other platforms, so let's lay it all out below.
The first beta weekend is over, so here's the up-to-date schedule.
Weekend 2 - all platforms (cross-play)
Dates: Thursday 19th September to Monday 23rd September
Early Access: The first two days within the above period are available to all PS4 users, as well as those who have pre-ordered Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on other platforms. Everyone else will be able to start playing from Saturday 21st September.
Start Time: Thursday 19th September
- North America: 10am PDT / 11am MDT / 12pm CDT / 1pm EDT
- UK/Ire: 6pm BST
- Europe: 7pm CEST / 8pm EEST
- Asia/Oceania: 2am JST / 1am AWST / 3am AEST
End Date: Monday 23rd September
When can you preload the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare open beta?
You'll be able to download the Modern Warfare beta ahead of time to ensure you can start playing from the second it goes online. Here's when preload will begin rolling out:
Tuesday 10th September
- North America: 10am PDT / 11am MDT / 12pm CDT / 1pm EDT
- UK/Ire: 6pm BST
- Europe: 7pm CEST / 8pm EEST
- Asia/Oceania: 2am JST / 1am AWST / 3am AEST
Is PlayStation Plus required to play the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare open beta?
Activision's wording on this subject is as follows: "If you’ve got a PlayStation 4 and an internet connection, you should be good to go, though PlayStation®Plus may be a requirement in some territories."
Unfortunately, we don't know which specific regions require PS Plus to play the beta. You'll have to give it a try. If we learn any more, we'll update this guide.
What content is included in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare open beta?
There aren't many details out there with regards to what's included in the Modern Warfare beta. Activision says to "Expect an epic and ever-changing series of Maps, Playlists, and other content drops throughout the Beta Test Weekends, with surprises and a great deal of content to access!"
Call of Duty focused website Charlie Intel lists a handful of modes and features:
- Gunfight 2v2 Mode
- 6v6 Maps
- Larger Player Count Modes
- Gunsmith Weapon Customization System
- And more

Do you have to have pre-ordered the game to take part?
@BowTiesAreCool Only if you want early access.
@Quintumply mis-read it. Cheers!
i'm vaguely interested in seeing how the large player count team modes compare with the likes of battlefield. haven't seen confirmation anywhere whether cross-play can be turned off or not, or whether it's forced upon you.
I still don't understand why this is a thing. We already had a remaster, why do we need a remake too? If any franchise is just announcing they are out of ideas, this seems to be the one.
@Heavyarms55 And this is the issue with the marketing for this title. Its neither a remake or a remaster. More a relaunch. At least thats my understanding. It shares the name and captain price, but i think thats pretty much it. Unless im mistaken? Haha
@Heavyarms55 'We already had a remaster, why do we need a remake too?'
They probably have new micro-transactions which they need to fit in.
so if you have a ps4 you can start playing from 14-16, and then again from 21-23. that is plenty of time to play the beta and get a feel of the game. there is no reason to pre-order that is for sure, if you are not a butt mad cod fanatic that is, lol.
@Rob_230 Okay, so it's a re-imagining of COD 4. Semantics. It's the same game getting redone. I still don't see why it needs to happen beyond remaking it full of micro transactions or they really are out of ideas - which is honestly fair, considering they've been chucking out one game after another like every 2 weeks or so.
@leucocyte
Yes you will be able to switch cross play off
@gingerfrog - yeah, i saw that in the options. i got one of the codes from this site. 43Gb download.. and that doesn't even include the campaign. :-/
@leucocyte it's also input based like Fortnite, matching controller users with other controller users but saying that I was using mouse and keyboard on PS4 last night while others were using controller maybe this will change in next weekends beta which is when the crossplatform stuff gets switched on
@Quintumply @TheBuzz Problem is (for me at least) I haven't found a single place where it's stated exactly when we can download the Open Beta for free (without preorder redeem codes). If we want to start playing Open Beta free tomorrow the 14th, then surely we'd like to download the gigantic file som time in advance so we actually will be able to play the 14th at all? As of now Friday 13th it's 'not purchase able'(as in can't be downloaded) on PS store due to I don't own Modern Warfare.
@gamer_since_83 I hear you, but I don't think you can preload the beta unless you've pre-ordered. Bit of a bummer, for sure.
@Quintumply But surely we need to be able to download it at some point right? Why on earth isn't this mentioned someplace either on PS store or ATVI.
I guess quite a lot of us COD followers who is sceptic nowadays after the BLOPS4 shambles, haven't pr-eorderd for good reasons.
Guess I'll check PS store this evening around 7pm or maybe midnight tonight.
@teknium_ - i noticed that i was being matched with users that showed a mouse icon - i thought it was a glitch to be honest, didn't realise they were allowing K/M on the console versions.
@Leucocyte they are allowing K/M but I think it's only being matched with others also using K/M, so if you are using gamepad on PS4 and are matched with K/M that seems odd...
I've got to say this game rocks! It is slick, it feels good to play and all my deaths have been warranted, i've not wanted to shout 'cheat' or 'lag' out loud. This is going to be a winner!
@gamer_since_83 activision did hold back info on purpose and did not do a option for people to preload the free open beta. this sneaky way of doing it was done to get people frustrated so they would preorder the game to get the beta, that is what happen. the free open beta download did go live 10am pst europe time yesterday (its a 48gb download so the first week will be short for the most of us, because of activisons bs). and infinity ward did give out open beta code on twitter an hour earlier than 10am (i accidentally stumbled over this, so i got my free open beta from there a bit earlier). i had to dig the internet to find out all this info yesterday. activision could have just typed this info on their official mw2019 web page. but we know now that mw2019 is gonna be released unfinished and have loot boxes as with everything cod (i thought this would change for mw2019, but clearly not) and you have to sign up to their activision web page to access the online because crossplay bs. this game will be bought on sale for sure, no way in hell i pay the ridicules full price activision wants. and i just hope the single player is good and at least last 10 hours. what i have tried of the online mp so far is ok, but its the same old cod you played 10 years ago, no surprise there.
32 v 32 ground war will be available tomorrow (saturday 21st).
I had a few games against xbox players, it was good fun.
