Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is making some big changes to the formula laid down by the first game. While Playtonic's debut effort was a decent attempt at a nostalgic 3D collect-a-thon, the follow-up is a smaller scale, 2.5D platformer with a nifty top-down overworld to explore. In this new trailer, it seems more than just the game's structure is down for alteration.
As you can see in this new footage, each of the game's levels has an alternate state, effectively doubling the number of stages. You trigger these by solving simple puzzles in the aforementioned hub world. An example shown in the trailer is freezing a lake in the overworld to make one level all iced up, presenting you with an extra challenge.
It's a cool little gameplay wrinkle that riffs on a similar element from the original Yooka-Laylee. Impossible Lair is due out towards the end of the year. What do you think of the game so far? Change things up in the comments below.

Love the idea so far. If it ends up being half as good as Tropical Freeze, I will actually be more likely to play this one instead of the original YL.
Looks great i might get it.
This is something I've almost never seen in a platformer since the original Wario Land. It was done so well in that game that it shocks me it hasn't been widely replicated.
i'll preorder to support the developers maybe that diddy kong spiritual successor will be next!
Excited for this. Hopefully get a release date soon.
Didn't like the first one for two reasons: 30FPS is HORRIBLE in platformers and I often just didn't know where to go next. Always had to look in walkthroughs. So I will wait for a test if I get this one.
