We thought this was some kind of weird Japanese to English translation during Square Enix's E3 2019 showcase, but no, Final Fantasy VII Remake is actually going to ship on two discs, as evidenced by the picture above. To be clear, we're talking about the "first game" here -- the one that launches in March 2020, and takes place only in Midgar. But yeah, two whole Blu-ray discs. Wow.
We assume the game's size will primarily be due to high quality cutscenes, since Square Enix loves using them so much. Maybe we can expect some lengthy cinematic sequences that weren't even in the original Final Fantasy VII? It's looking very likely.

one episode on each disc ? i heard this game has two episodes so we have to finish both instead wait for another episode that coming later ????
@TheLastOfUs2 I think they mean the 1st episode is 2 Blu rays big.
@ztpayne7 Thank
Maybe they should only put game files on HDD.
Video streaming is becoming very common now.
I'd rather just stream extended cut-scenes, rather than fill-up my drive.
Wait what haha the first part is 2 discs long is that right surly not
The game visuals itself is better than the cg graphics on psone, it looks like advent cg movie, the cg in this game will be more amazing
With two discs, there's a lot that can be potentially done. I don't think we're just getting a straight up remake now. That power needs to used and used well.
@GamerDad66 brilliant idea 👍
@GamerDad66 What about if you're in a place without the internet, have a slow connection, the connection is down, or you're playing in the future when the servers have closed?
@Denzle7787 Lots of games are more than 50gb which is what a dual layer bluray can hold. FFXV on PC is an insane 148gb because of the ultra HD textures amongst other things. 😮
hold up, are they going to charge 60$ for each part? if so that's some BS..
@youreyesonly00 Why? Not trolling, but im Im more convinced than ever Square are not half baking this. If this was a game that had never been released before and they said that the game would be told over 2 or 3 parts would you object to paying $60 a time? Take Trails of cold steel. Its too ambitious for 1 game so the whole story spans 4 games. I dont see this as a massive issue
Square have said this version is not just ff7 with modern graphics slapped on. I fully expect this version of midgar to be significantly expanded and last anywhere between 40 and 60 hours. Significantly longer than many 6-8 hour games charging the same amount for each subsequent game in the series. Im anticipating at least 150 hours of content when all parts are out. Especially given part 1 is over 2 discs. Has that happened this gen? I dont recall any other game doing this (even RDR2 was strictly only one disc, even if it had a seperate data installation disc)
It has to be appreciated that this isnt 1997. This is a MASSIVE undertaking. I think Square can be criticised for many things over the last few years, but this seems to make good sense if we want this to be the game we want it to be.
Tbh, Squares biggest error was calling it episodic. It conjures up images of a telltale game or a life is strange etc. A 10 hour game sliced into parts. Thats not what this game is.
Just my 2 pence worth.
@Rob_230 What's the difference? I think this will be the same as RDR2. One installation disc, and a second one that works like a normal game (though let's be honest, everything is installed on the HDD, so both are "installation discs" essentially).
It would be stupid and unlogical if they have you switching discs halfway through the game like the PS1 release. Because it would mean that the discs have to contain a lot of duplicate models, textures and code.
@Rob_230 if they are charging the same price for each release separately then that is a no buy for me. No way in hell i'm paying multiple fees for a split up game, i'll wait for the complete edition...
Holy s***, this game is turning out beautifully. How cool would it be if they made the full thing on 3 different episodes? Like the OG 3 disc ps1 version. In any case, with the way it’s looking, I am more than willing to shell out however much they need to (re)make this the masterpiece that it is...
I know you're excited, but please mind your language - Quintumply
And there it is. DLC materia. Bye bye gold chocobo and KOTR, hello £7.99 premium materia pack.
@Neolit 😂 I get both sides but it would be a good idea for some games during the install to offer an option of either full installation or to stream the cgi bits to save hard drive space maybe in the future.
Good game to get digitally then x)
This is one I'll be getting physically, that box art is amazing
@youreyesonly00 I assume you didn't buy God of War either, because there's a sequel coming and you don't want to buy half a game?
If this was a remaster, you'd be right. This isn't however. It's a remake. Whether they can make this into a full game is another question, but it's definitely going to be way bigger than the original game. Who knows what else they're going to change, but if they can make this first part seem like a full game, what's the problem?
@b1ackjack it's about a third of the main game.
@Neolit or hopefully just give us all a gigantic ssd drive with the ps5 😂👍
@b1ackjack The Square-Enix store states that this is the first part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series. "Series" being the key word here.
Midgar makes up about one tenth of the total content in the original game. However, it was confirmed on stage that the Midgar section is being massively fleshed out. That's why it's become its own game. (Personally, I'm all for Midgar being fleshed out.)
Realistically, I would expect at least three additional chapters.
I suspect that in the subsequent chapters the world map will be gone, with a more linear Final Fantasy X-esque approach to the world. (Don't worry if that makes no sense.)
I really recommend that that you play the original game on PS4. There are options to speed it up and make it very easy if you're worried about it. It's still one of the all time greats and absolutely worth your time. Then you'll understand all the hubbub and be one of us!
I hope to be able to go to the other sectors in Midgar when I first played it it FF7 on PS1 I thought that's what I was going to be doing. Then the story just shifted again and again and next thing I've got a world map in front of me and I can visit loads of other places. But to be able to see what Midgar has never seen before I really hope it does. Im seriously considering ore ordering that 1st class edition for the statue
i don't think they were very clear if the full game will need two discs in total or the first episode will already take two discs.
but if the first episode will need two discs then i'm glad they're not being cheap by just having one disc and patching the rest via a day-one update.
i guess they will need a lot less time for the other episodes
I'm new to Final Fantasy, but that trailer did an excellent job of getting me excited for it.
@DVS ill be sooo disapointed if we get a Final Fantasy X style world map, even if i think you are probably right.
@themcnoisy Midgar is a 3rd of the full game? That's not right lol.
@carlos82 i like the steelbook in the deluxe, including the soundtrack on disc is a nice is a bonus.
@Octane "I assume you didn't buy God of War either, because there's a sequel coming and you don't want to buy half a game?"
I so would NOT have bought GoW had I known it had that cliffhanger ending and it was only part of the story. I read so much about that game beforehand and it was all great. Not one person ever said - "too bad about that cliffhanger ending". Or on a more positive note - "Can't wait for part 2." It doesn't even have a subtitle. I will not buy or play part 2 until I make sure it ends. And since the first trilogy was, well, a trilogy, I'm assuming this will be too. So before I get interested I'll have to know if it ends or sets up the ending.
And Squenix should really, really, really give us some type of road map. Their track record is iffy, no faith. I'm 53, 54 next month, if each part only comes out every 3 years, well I'm not sure I'll be able to handle Sephiroth when I'm 60.
@youreyesonly00 I'm too worn out to take on the entire website but here's a copy & paste from my post last night agreeing with what you said since you seem to be under heavy fire. I don't like when people get ganged up on, especially when they are right.
"They can call it a "full game" all they want, but it isn't. FF7 was a full game, on PS1, on PC. Yes, it may be long enough and have enough content to be worth the cost, but there is NO POSSIBLE WAY this can end and anyone can think, hmm, that felt like the end of the game. FF7 has 1 ending, that's it. Anything before that it is NOT a full game. It just isn't and won't feel like it.
So yeah, enough content for $60 is possible, but when's the rest? Will we need to purchase a PS5 for part 2 and a PS6 for part 3?
They really need to and should show us the road map. Does this end before Half-life 3? I can't believe they aren't talking and people are OK with it. This is Squenix. 10 years for FFXV. Why any trust?"
This is like how they took a small book like The Hobbit or Fantastic Beasts and magically inflated it to be 3-5 movies.
If this game will be split into three parts, that is potentially 6 bluray disks. It must be due to pre-rendered cutscenes and I'm rather disappointed with that since I love to see cutscenes done in-engine. But I suppose it's ok for this game since the characters' looks don't change. Are they pre-rendering the cutscenes are multiple resolutions (eg: 1080p and 4k)? I guess swapping disk is authentic to the original experience...
Is the title of the first game final? Final Fantasy 7 remake? What will they name the later episodes? Remark Part 2 / Part 3?
@Bliquid game looks great, but i stand by my convictions..
@Octane was finaly fantasy 7 for the PS1, released months apart? that's some idiotic logic, God of war is a complete game & can stand on it's own. imgaine splitting that up & releasing the game while visiting different realms..
@rjejr i'm also surprised people are not bringing that up. i'd be a fool to pay separate prices for a game that released on the PS1 as a finished product..
I wonder how they'll do the world map? Will it be open world with monsters roaming about, will it be like the original with random battles or will you just move on to the next location via a cutscene/loading screen? It's gonna be interesting to see how SE handle it.
@youreyesonly00 Yeah, but this isn't 1997 Final Fantasy 7; this is a remake. They add stuff to the game. This game will be more than just the first 6 hours of the original game.
@Octane plenty of remakes released as a full game. If you have to release this on 6 disc then so be it, but i will not patronize a split up game months or a year down the road..
@youreyesonly00 That depends on how you remake them. If they turn this from a 50-hour game into a 300-hour game, I can understand them splitting it up. If that also means we get to explore Midgar fully. Imagine a life-size city that you'll be able to explore. Expecting the rest of the game on top of that is just too much. Again, this isn't a 1-to-1 remake.
@Octane i'll wait for the complete edition
@youreyesonly00 I think people have wanted this for so long, and it does look really good, they're willing to give Squenix the benefit of the doubt. 10 years ago I'd probably be right there along w/ them. 10 years ago I wasn't making out wills and trying to decide if I wanted to be buried, cremated or blasted off into space. Facing one's mortality changes a guy. For the worse. And I was already a glass-half-empty guy to begin with. I'm happy my kids will be able to play this, maybe with my grandkids, but I'm just not in the mood to start something I may not be able to finish. Or enjoy finishing. Certainly not at $60 a pop.
Not gonna lie though, I might borrow it for a weekend from my library, no harm in looking, and free is free.
I hope people enjoy the game but I think I might wait until the entire game-games-whatever is out so like a decade from now.
The original was an ordinary JRPG with mind-blowing graphics on multiple discs.
The remake could end up bring an ordinary AJRPG with mind-blowing graphics on multiple discs.
I bought FFVII on PS1 only when it come on the budget-price Platinum edition because of backlog and lack of money.
I'll buy FFVII remake on PS4 only when it will came on the budget-price Playstation Hits edition because of backlog and lack of money.
One more important question can i save the crying kid this time. And im not waiting 5 years de a Complete Edition if its €60 for a lot of game im not gonna be cheap. 😆
Two Blu-ray disks...
After all the incredible, long, and detailed experiences we've played on the PS4 We are supposed to accept that the Midgar content alone covers two whole disks?...
They're lying.
I think I know why too.
Ok remember being very surprised I had only just started the game once I got out of Midgar... How would they create that feeling again when many of us know the plot?
Though it may not be the entire story I'm willing to bet money it goes all the way up to... Oooh... Some kind of tragedy I expect.
