CD Projekt Red has slapped a release date on Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales. The game originally started out as Gwent: The Witcher Card Game's campaign component, but it's grown into its own single player role-playing title, and it'll launch as a standalone game on PlayStation 4 in December.
For those out of the loop, here's the official description of Thronebreaker from the Polish developer:
Thronebreaker is a single player role-playing game set in the world of The Witcher that combines narrative-driven exploration with unique puzzles and card battle mechanics. Crafted by the developers responsible for some of the most iconic moments in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the game spins a truly regal tale of Meve, a war-veteran queen of two Northern Realms — Lyria and Rivia. Facing an imminent Nilfgaardian invasion, Meve is forced to once again enter the warpath, and set out on a dark journey of destruction and revenge.
Throughout the adventure, players will explore new and never-before-seen parts of The Witcher world, embark on thought-provoking quests featuring rich, multidimensional characters. All while gathering resources to expand their army and engaging in epic story battles powered by the skill-based battle system known from Gwent: The Witcher Card Game.
CD Projekt Red says that pricing will be announced at a later date ahead of release, so it sounds as though it won't be free-to-play like Gwent.
It certainly sounds interesting though, doesn't it? You can nab it from the PlayStation Store on the 4th December.

Excellent, been waiting for this for ages.
Not sure this'll be my type of game but I really like that art style.
This I really can't wait for.
I was wondering what happened to the single player part of Gwent.
Glad to see it's almost here.
Can they make the combat 3rd person like the witcher 3? I don't like card game..
Interesting. I enjoy a card game when it's part of a story. Maybe this will scratch my Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes itch. It wasn't a card game but a really fun puzzle RPG. And two player worked really well, which was a surprise bonus. I'll keep an eye out. Id' go play Gwent to see if I like it but I just deleted it's 6GB to make room for DQXI. Guess I'll just wait and play TW3.
@rjejr As someone who has been quite an active Gwent player, I'm going to advice against playing Gwent right now. Around the launch of Thronebreaker they're going to release Homecoming, the newest update for free. It's going to change Gwent... a lot. And the idea is to make it more Witcher-y. The game is going to change fundamentally, and from what it seems for the better. It's too long of a list to name the actual changes (especially if you haven't played yet), but I can easily show you two screenshots for a general idea.

Really liking that CD Project Red quality.
If it's what I think it is, a Gwent RPG, I'm there day one!
@Kidfried Are they getting rid of the siege class, why? That's looks more like a 'evolution' (not necessarily in a good way) of the Gwent beta, then a return to the game that was in TW3.
@Octane They wanted to make the game more like The Witcher 3 as a whole, not more like the Gwent card game in The Witcher 3. This also meant having the game be more like a battlefield instead of a card game, which is reflected in the looks. There will be different battlefields.
They actually wanted to make the classes more meaningful. With cards being possibly placed on all rows, but having them be more effective on one row, or more effective in combinations. This will make the gameplay a bit more complex than the 'who has the highest number' from the card game, and will actually mean thinking about what to put where (instead of being required so). But I think to keep the game from becoming too complex they chose for this set up.
Honestly, I believe they know what they're doing. I've been following the game from day 1 and also feared they would ruin the mechanics when they announced one day to make the "gold" cards not immune anymore for weather effects. It actually added to the game depth. And for everything they take away, they get something else in.
The community really clamored for changes, as they found 'luck' to be too big of a factor in the current game. They say the changes they make are all with the goal to make the game more about skill instead of "who has the best hand".
I hope they will achieve this goal. Regardless, I'm buying Thronebreaker day 1 for the story alone. If the card game within that game is fun, I reckon I'll be playing Gwent for months to come again.
@Kidfried Hey thanks for that, appreciate it. Those pics look like two different games so you're right, no point in starting a game that's going away to be replaced by a seemingly new one.
And thanks for the long explanation to Octane, makes sense.
And if you haven't 'already, I think you'd like M&M. Here's a quick review. Though I don't think it's on PS4.
Also, FYI, you can embed pics by putting the letters img, don't think case matters, between two square brackets, [1mg] then copy and paste http address from your webbar, then [/1mg]. Just use the letter i instead of the number 1.

@Kidfried Well, I got invited to the beta late 2016-ish (I think it was 2016). Gwent is something I played in short bursts ever since. Usually for a day or two. Last time I played it was early summer iirc. I always prefered the way TW3 handled the rows, so I never understood why they ditched that concept to begin with. It's good to see they're returning to that, but I still hope siege makes a return. I feel that the three rows, along with the three weather effects were a core feature of the game. Anyway, I'll probably get it either way, because it seems they know what they're doing based on my experience with TW alone.
Excellent. Defo nabbing this in a few months.
@wiiware @roe Hopefully this card game is alot more fun than Re: Chain of Memories, hated the battle system for that.
Nice! I like the screenshots they have shown for the world exploration. Day one whatever the price.
I was excited till you said puzzles. I hate puzzles...
@rjejr Thanks. They took Clash of Heroes off the Google store unfortunately, but I can get it for PC as well. Looks like it's up my alley.
@Kidfried We played it on PS3. My wife liked it so much she then bought it on DS to play on her 3DS and she isn't really a gamer.
