There's really no other way to put it: Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is a delight. Level-5's latest role-playing game is as charming as it is colourful, and after around 15 hours of play, we simply can't wait to continue our adventure. So far, it really has been worth the wait.
As its title suggests, Ni no Kuni II is a sequel to Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, which released on the PlayStation 3 back in 2013 here in the West. The game was well received both by critics and players, and this next instalment looks set to follow in its footsteps.
It's not a direct sequel, though. There's no continuation of the original's story or anything like that -- just a few nods here and there. As such, newcomers shouldn't be worried about being late to the party. It also helps that Ni no Kuni II has undergone some significant gameplay changes, ultimately making it a very different experience to its predecessor.
This is still an adventure that'll see you travel across a vast fantasy world, battling monsters and making a stand against evil, but everything feels more streamlined. From the fluid menus to the combat system, Ni no Kuni II is a lot easier to wrap your head around, especially during the opening few hours.
However, that's not to say that things have been dumbed down. As we've continued with young would-be king Evan on his quest, the game's steadily introduced new systems and mechanics. We've learned the ins and outs of special attacks, took part in real-time strategy skirmishes, and started work on building our very own kingdom.
All of that may sound like a bit of a hodgepodge, but honestly, it all flows together incredibly well -- and that's really our main takeaway after 15 hours. Everything in Ni no Kuni II is just so buttery smooth. The frame rate, which seems to hold at a constant 60 frames per second, is silky smooth. The controls and character animations are super smooth. The art style's so smooth that your eyes just kind of glide across the screen as they're caressed by colours and soft edges. Heck, even the new action-based combat system feels smooth.
Speaking of which, we didn't expect the combat to be this enjoyable. As mentioned, Ni no Kuni II does away with the original game's system almost entirely, replacing it with battles that are full-on action. It's a change that many returning players will no doubt be unsure of, but we've been loving it so far.
On a surface level, combat is simple. Each character comes equipped with both a melee weapon and a long range weapon. There are light and heavy attacks, a dodge roll, and you can block to lessen incoming damage. Special moves and spells are also thrown into the mix, and little elemental creatures known as higgledies offer support in the form of buffs and powerful magic. It's learning how to best make use of your many tools that brings depth to the system.
Again, just charging about the battlefield feels great. The controls are tight and responsive, and the artificial intelligence does a good job of supporting you. Battering beasts of all shapes and sizes is satisfying and surprisingly moreish; this is the kind of battle system that you keep wanting to come back to, even if it's just to grind for materials or loot.
Overall, we've been having a blast with Ni no Kuni II -- it really is a joy to play. At this point, we're just hoping that the game keeps on delivering, and if it can, then we're probably looking at one of the best RPGs on the PlayStation 4.
Are you looking forward to Ni no Kuni II? Stay tuned for our full review very soon, but until then, embark on a grand adventure into the comments section below.

Sorry we couldn't have a full review today — we were delayed for reasons outside of our control. Hopefully we'll have a full review around launch.
In the meantime, feel free to ask me about the game. I'll try to answer anything that I can, just @ me.
Hype IntensifiEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.
Sounds good. It took a few years to really get going, but the PS4 is having a hell of a run with its exclusives!
So it isn't turn based? Hmm interest rising.... Will wait for review though.
This sounds very good. PS4 quietly assembling another killer lineup in 2018 again. Absolutely loads of great stuff coming out and to look forward to.
I definitely want to try this at some point, sounds lovely.
Have you encountered the RTS stuff yet? Because that's really putting me off
Seems good, I hope I can buy the steelcase version in my country
@ShogunRok Are the cast of characters as likeable as the fist game? How many different British accents have you heard so far?
Best looking game ever.wow this game will be a masterpiece.word up son
.. Kotaku states that the game is 'way too easy' and desperately needs difficulty settings, would you agree with this? :/ (nothing worse than a challenge-less RPG) especially coming off the back of how tough the first one was!
@ShogunRok this will be the best rpg ever.not one one the best.but the best playa.word up son
Can you at least collect different higgledies?
Another game I will work into my future backlog list. (I can’t remember who on here coined the term “my backlog has a backlog” but that applies here)
@get2sammyb best looking game ever.and this will be the best rpg ever word up son
Only just got around to starting the original so I'm going to have to wait a little while before I buy this, but buy it I shall. The reviews have been glowing so far and it sounds amazing. PS4's lineup just keeps getting better.
Can't wait for this one!
Just start my pillars of eternity campaign and loving it, I want to play this soonish too but I'm still hopefully maybe they'll port the first game and I'd like to play it first. Didn't really have timenon PS3.
@Kai_ The RTS stuff is really pretty simple and definitely not the pain in the arse that I was worried it would be. It's actually quite fun!
@ApostateMage I quite like the cast so far, but I do think they're perhaps a little underdeveloped. That could just be because I'm only 15 hours in, though.
And yeah, plenty of British accents getting thrown around!
@AFCC You can, yes. There are a lot of them to collect and they're all scattered across the world in various dungeons.
@OneManDroid That's actually something I plan on bringing up in the review — I just wanted to see whether things get harder as I get further into the game.
Based on what I've played so far, yes, it's pretty easy. I've barely had to use any healing items or anything yet, and although a couple of bosses have been slightly tricky, they've never really been a threat.
Some difficulty settings would be great, I think. I don't think it's so easy that it's ruining the game, but a harder difficulty level alongside this current one would go a long way for a lot of players.
@ShogunRok thanks for the response! the first wasn't that bad but had some seriously out-of-place spikes / areas / fights / bosses and the grind-fest became a bit too much as the game went on... it's always a fine line with games like these!
Persona 5 last year and ni no Kuni this year? I wonder what awesome jrpg will release next year?
This Aint a true exclusive since its also found on PC. Still waiting for a worthwhile exclusive God of War cant get here fast enough. Word down daughter.
@DashingGold1 out on a system other than PS4, you say? Preordered cancelled. I'm not having it.
@ShogunRok at least some things to collect
Does the game has a variety of different weapons or is it like most of these RPGs where the weapons are the exact same just with different skins and stats?
@kyleforrester87
If PC/Xbox games dont count as exclusives then PC/Ps4 Games dont count as exclusives
@ShogunRok I loved the atmosphere of the first but was bummed by the combat and the blandness of the characters....are they a bit less dull this time around?
@DashingGold1 It's a console exclusive, not that it matters one bit either way to anyone with an IQ in the double digits or higher.
@Grim-Tuesday Kingdom Hearts 3. I’m pretty certain that will be delayed into 2019. Maybe even Dragon Quest XI if it doesn’t make it West this year.
@ShogunRok How is the cast? That was one of my main concerns. Do they fail to make an impression even after 15 hours?
Part of the charm of the first game was the relationship between Oliver & Mr Drippy.
@OneManDroid
Kotaku I wouldn't trust there reviews as far as good throw an elephant the worst gaming site out there, the near perfect scores of final fantasy 13 and dynasty warriors nine prove this, the original was quite easy and I enjoyed that , some ways it nice to just play something easier and just enjoy the story etc.
@Feena I think the combat is a lot more involved this time around and quicker paced, so that's a definite plus in my book. Characters I'm not too sure on just yet. I like them but there isn't much depth to them so far. Could all change as I get further in, though.
@Fight_Teza_Fight Come on man, don't say that!
@Fight_Teza_Fight I wouldn't say they fail to make an impression but I haven't been blown away by any of them yet. At first the story moves quite quickly so there's not too much room for development, but when things slow down now and then there's some nice dialogue between party members. Again, I just need to see more.
Also, can we stop with the console war comments, please? This is going to be the only warning before I start deleting them.
@DashingGold1 We don't change our definitions just cause they did. It only creates confusion and double standards.
@ShogunRok I really can't understand why people can't see all console have there good and bad points and if you are a true gamer you can appreciate more than one and most of us will have more than one, having an Xbox,PS4 vita, 3ds and switch they complement each other for me.
@ShogunRok Thanks. I’m going in quietly optimistic then. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it based on your positive hands on.
@Grim-Tuesday As a self-confessed Kingdom Hearts fanboy I just can’t believe this game is as close as Square leads us to believe.
Hope I’m wrong though!!
@DashingGold1 Yeah, it’s not a real exclusive, but the game looks great. I really loved the first and I was worried about the sequel, but it looks like a great experience. PS4 will still receive many exclusives, I really recommend you to check PS Blog, they made a great list with upcoming exclusives.
@ShogunRok Now Sony can help with the first one remastered for the PS4. 😁
@suikoden Sorry i just dont like the Xbox no titles i want to play and for that cash i can get 3 games maybe i will get a switch in a few years.
I am so glad this game turned out so well, I never played the original due to not owning a PlayStation since the PS2 but I know for a fact I will be picking this one up, action rpgs, especially from Level 5 are some of my favorite.
Feels like all these 2018 PlayStation are going to deliver. This is looking great and so is God of War, of course!
Haven't turned on my PS4 in a while, but this week that is definitely going to change. Can't wait to get my hands on this beauty.
@ShogunRok Review embargo?
@ReanSchwarzer7
That's what I'm thinking , really don't why they have them as on the whole they probably do more harm than good, If you have faith that you made a good game an embargo shouldn't matter, but it might help those who have made a awful game get sale's
@ReanSchwarzer7 Embargo lifted today, but we haven't had the game long enough to do a full review.
@ShogunRok thank you !
The changes from the first game sound wonderful; I'm definitely going to buy this one.
@ShogunRok Hi, was wondering if you know the length (running time) of the "Making of" video that's included in the King's Edition.
Definitely going to pick this up on Friday, it looks like everything the current Tales games should be graphics wise. And I much prefer real time combat to turn based so I'm set.
@WanderingBullet No idea unfortunately — we just got a download code for review and that was it. I'm sure you'll be able to find out once the game's released though.
@Ichiban I just want to say I love your name and photo.
Everywhere I go I see that the game is too easy! The first one wasn't hard per se but it was grindy...grinding is crap to be honest but I sure hope Ni 2 was a little bit more challenging since it's action based
@AFCC ah thanks!
@ShogunRok No worries.
@Flaming_Kaiser Same here, not alot of Xbox One titles I care about, but I may get a Switch eventually...
well my copy has just turned up so thats my weekend sorted
