For those of you worried that Monster Hunter: World would gobble up a huge portion of your precious hard drive space, never fear. According to the below image of the Japanese box, it seems the epic beast-slaying adventure will need just 16GB for installation.
Alright, so 16GB isn't exactly tiny, but when you compare it to most of the other big titles released in recent years, it's pretty small. We would've expected it to be about thrice as large, given what we know of the size and scope of the game.
Still, it doesn't really tell us too much. The main thing is that we know Monster Hunter: World shows huge promise. Don't forget, there's one more chance to go hands on with a final open beta test, which begins 19th January (or 18th January for you Americans).
What do you make of Monster Hunter: World's modest file size? Hammer your thoughts into the comments below.

Sounds well optimised. Other developers should take notes.
Not looking forward to that day one patch... Just kidding!
Digital download it is
16GB is more than manageable. I'm so used to every retail game being at least 25-50GB these days.
Hmm that day one patch tho... Devs be killing me with multi GB patches on release date.
That's pretty impressive... well, given the game ends up being as big as I hope! Regardless, this is small enough to fit on the Switch with ease... please Capcom... I'm already waiting for the PC version, so if a Switch version gets announced, I'll be sold.
@wiggleronacid Capcom already said it ain’t coming to Switch as it’d require more time & resources to make sure it is optimized well. You’d best wait til Fall also they said they wanna focus on the platforms already announced
16gb is nothing compared to other ps4 games like doom (70gb+), I think I'll buy the digital version of the game.
Still have plenty of room on my 2TB external hard drive. Best $70 I ever spent
"Size doesn't matter"
My ex-girlfriend used to say that.
@KingdomHeartsFan yes. many games are even bigger. i just had to download a 40 GB PATCH for a game lol.
@KingdomHeartsFan Yeah, install sizes are generally the same whether you get the game on disc or not. Then when you add patches on top of that, you're looking at some huge files. The biggest that come to my mind are FFXV which is around 100GB and The Elder Scrolls Online which is also around 100GB.
16 GB is not that surprising considering how low quality many of the textures are
I'm moving house and had to cancel my broadband the other day. BT checked my internet usage and I'm averaging 128gb in downloads a month. That is about 96% from my ps4. And mostly patches for games rather than downloading digital games from the store. It's ridiculous really.
Well done capcom if the file size for this is true. But i can't help but feel nervous about the size of the patches headed in its direction
@KingdomHeartsFan 1TB is doable if you're the type to delete games that you're not using anymore. I've had 1TB for a while (it's actually closer to 900GB) and it's been fine as long as I delete stuff that I'm no longer playing.
And that's just the install data, by the way — save data is kept separately.
@KingdomHeartsFan Yeah, these install as getting larger and larger. I have a launch PS4 with the 500 GB internal HD and I just couldn’t stand having to pick and choose what to delete next. When I bought a 2 TB external HDD I felt liberated. I have all kinds of junk games downloaded that I’ll probably never play and still have more than half my space left. I like not having to worry about it and I kind of wish I had gone the extra $40 for 4 TB but maybe I’ll be okay until PS5.
I've just bought a 4tb external hdd for my ps4 and liberated is the right word.
I think the beta was only 6 GB?
@Derpie1 I'm already waiting for the PC version so I won't mind waiting for the Switch version if it's announced.
Nice. Means I can reinstall some games I had previously deleted.
Hope the game has like 2000000000 quests
The game install is only 16gb, but you're forgetting that you will need MUCH more space for this game... how else are you going to save all those awesome gameplay clips and cool screenshots?
