When Skull & Bones was revealed during Ubisoft's E3 2017 press conference, we're sure that a lot of viewers were sitting there wondering if it was a another pirate-themed Asssassin's Creed game. After all, the project is based on the tech that we originally saw in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, right down to the foundation of its naval combat.
Of course, we now know that Skull & Bones is its own intellectual property, but why did Ubisoft go against placing it under the Assassin's Creed banner? According to Gamespot, developer Ubisoft Singapore basically wanted to branch out. "After Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, [we wanted] to stay in the pirate fantasy and to make it bigger and stronger," managing director Olivier de Rotalier said in a recent interview.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot added: "We didn't want the limits -- creating a new IP gives you the chance to do whatever you want. It's a way to get more freedom."
So, despite its similarities to the adventures of Edward Kenway, it's clear that the publisher is trying to go bigger and hopefully better with Skull & Bones' pirate offering. Are you looking forward to this one? Sink some ships in the comments section below.

Black Flag was my favourite AC game, it was a fantastic pirate game and I really do hope it builds upon this with Skull and Bones.
I loved Black Flag so much that I'm playing through again for the Third time (not in a row), I've heard bits and bobs about Skull and Bones, Is it just going to be a multiplayer experience or will there be a single player campaign as well? Anyone know?
Always said ACiv would have been better suited to being its own IP and give Ubisoft a new franchise to offset against AC every year. I think if they had of turned ACiv into its own IP, then gave us a Pirate follow up every other year to AC franchise - it could have helped AC from spiralling downhill and given Ubisoft a new direction they could have explored. Only a few years late but it looks like they are finally doing this.
I've kinda wondered before if Black Flag was actually a pirate game that they turned into an Assassins Creed one to give it brand recognition.
It's just a fancy looking multiplayer online battleships. Let it sink with all the other online only games.
It's not really a pirate fantasy, its For Honor with boats. We wanted a full on pirate game. I'll still be playing it though.
problem is when you build it on ACIV's engine then people are going to make connections to it whether you want them to or not
Can you get out of your boats and go to different islands and do what you want in this game or is it all just naval combat?
This looks really good. Pirates haven't really been explored to their full potential yet (imo). Tbh, I'm a little more excited for Sea of Thieves because I like the artstyle more than the gritty realism of Skull and Bones (also SoT reminds me in some ways of Monkey Island and I love that game), but both look like a lot of fun.
If it's online only though, I hope it's not peer-to-peer like For Honor. I don't really know what peer-to-peer means but it sucked in For Honor.
Online Only. Those two words are all I need to stay away from any game, no matter how good it is (that, and turn-based combat. God, how I hate turn-based combat). Is it so difficult to offer a decent game experience offline? I'll never understand why they do it. They've got to know by now that a lot of people won't buy a game if it's online only, doesn't matter if it's a question of taste or just plain awful internet connection or no connection at all, they lose a ton of money every time they do it. It's a mistery to me.
@Rudy_Manchego My thoughts, as well. It seems so far off the AC thread, but I did enjoy it a lot. I hope this isn't For Honor with boats.
I think a pirate action/adventure game has a good market and a ton of potential. Hello? Any developers/publishers out there? O.O
I loved Sid Meiers Pirates! Hopefully this is more of a modern day version. It would only be a few tweaks from Black Flag.
It's like For Honor. I like the concept, but the online-only is putting me off. Another decent Ubisoft game I have to pass.
I was really hoping for a tai pan (an old and brilliant 8/16 bit seafaring game) with the black flag sailing. Kind of "elite" with ships.... Ah well next time.
@starhops Yeah, I think this looks great but I am worried that it is just another For Honor in the making since this is what Ubisoft wants to make on the whole, which is an online micro transaction heavy experience. I want a fully fledged story where my pirate, a hearty fellow with a shaggy beard, works his way up to make a fleet and rule the seas .
This game really got my attention, but then i found it is all on ships and the protagonist is basically a pirate ship.
I am still hoping for a new adventure game, pirates or not, that is on a ship with lots of exploration on land and at sea like Black Flag offers.
