Topic: Am I Leaving the Playstationverse for Starfield 😱😱😱

So I’m still playing on a PS4. That’s one thing. I love sci-fi. That’s another. I really like Skyrim, and with Starfield being Skyrim in SPACE, I’m very tempted to upgrade…to an Xbox Series X.

I’m wondering if I’m wondering off alone or if anyone else is making the move with me? Being that the PS4 is phasing out-ish I’ll need to upgrade eventually anyway, is now the time to switch platform?!?!

And, no, financially I can’t get both a PS5 and a Series X (and my wife would kill me 🤣)

Honestly, if you're worried about not having access to exclusives from both consoles, I'd highly recommend going for a PC. I know it's more expensive to get one that runs all modern games, but I think it pays off in the end. Completely depends on your financial situation if it's viable though, of course. You get access to all the Xbox exclusives day one and PlayStation exclusives are at this point pretty much guaranteed to come to the platform within a few years after release. That way you'll be able to experience the best of both worlds! Besides, buying games on PC is generally cheaper than on console too. There's so many different options of where you can buy your games instead of being locked to the one highly controlled marketplace. Stuff gets cheaper way quicker and there's pretty much always a sale running somewhere.

Xbox isn't prioritizing the console anymore. If you want Starfield, I'd recommend getting a PC. Bethesda games tend to run best on PC anyway and the Xbox won't have mods. So, if you already have a PC (I have a gaming laptop that I also use for work), you're good and then you'll still be able to get a PS5.

@JMills I would certainly wait for reviews before buying a console for a single game.

We don’t know yet how Starfield will perform across the Series S and X. But if you’re having difficulty justifying the cost of a new console and reviews say it’s equivalent. Then you could consider a Series S.

Assuming it runs well, you could always grab a Series S for Starfield (+ any other Xbox games not coming to Playstation) and then a PS5 down the line during a sale.

It really just depends on the sort of games you're excited for, though. No point in going PS5 at all if you don't want any of its exclusive games. And with Xbox you'll have access to Game Pass.

@XboxTheBestBox very true! I’m just curious if anyone else was just as excited as I am to make the leap. TBH I’ll probably pick up a PS6 when they announce Bloodborn 2 as a launch title (a boy can dream at least 😅)

@Tjuz you’re not wrong, that’s for sure. I used to be PC but I have this nagging FOMO with all the new hardware coming out almost every day, so I find myself more comfy in the console realm. You get what you get and I don’t covet my neighbors duel 4080 graphics card with water cooling and RGB Techno funk 😲😲😲

@Ryall YES! Good point, friend. I’m 10000% waiting for reviews. I mean, it is Bethesda after all 🤣🤣🤣. I need to know if I can pass through locked doors by mushing a bowl between me and the door and just running in to it a la Skyrim style.

@PixelDragon Thanks for the great input! Someone else mentioned seeing if the graphics are all THAT much better between the S and X. If it’s not that big of a jump, I could see just going with the S. I appreciate the advice

@JMills Can't judge for you, it might be a good time for you to switch platforms. Just watch out you don't buy a console for one game, though. You'll probably like the game, but will you love it 500 dollar?

Aside from that: happy gaming and power to you

@JMills Haha, fair enough. I still have my Ryzen 5 2600x and GeForce 1660 Super. Nothing groundbreaking and at this point probably considered outdated, but I haven't found a game I can't run with them yet! As long as that stays true, I don't care what anyone else has.

@JMills I'd recommend at least waiting for event season to end before making a decision. Events can really change the perspective of things (for good or for bad), like how the June Nintendo Direct revealed a strong 2nd half of the year lineup which was previously rather empty or how the May Playstation Showcase made plenty of people more concerned that Sony's focusing way too heavily on live service.

Nintendo almost always has a Direct in September, Sony always has something around August/September (sometimes State of Play, sometimes Playstation Showcase), Microsoft has streams at Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show, etc.

Event season generally ends once September's over but if you don't mind waiting a bit longer for getting your system of choice cheaper, wait for holiday sales.

@JMills Asking on a 'Playstation' site maybe isn't the best way to get 'answers'.

At the end of the day, its still going to come down to you and your preferences. You 'could upgrade to a Series X, but that is going to be a 'fresh' start but upgrading to a PS5 would allow you to 'keep' playing all your PS4 games. You also don't 'need' to buy a 'Series S/X' console at all as its on PC, Cloud (inc last gen Xbox, mobiles, laptops etc) and 'Steam' too so you have other optional ways to play. With MS, their 'ecosystem' is not just their console so the console is 'optional' and you 'pay' for whatever tier of gaming performance.

Entry tier is Cloud as its the cheapest with just a small monthly fee to play a 'limited' selection of games at 'upto' 1080/60 with minor 'issues' associated with streaming. Series S is the 'entry' hardware tier - cheapest 'hardware' but has a massive library of games thanks to Back Compt, but like the PS4/XB1 vs Pro/XB1X, will not have the best resolution and/or lack some 'performance/RT' modes. Series X is the 'equivalent' tier to a PS5 and similar cost with the 'top' tier being the high end gaming PC's. With Sony, you have basically 1 tier of Gaming, the PS5 and whilst they may release games on PC, you'll be waiting until Sony decides their game isn't 'selling' many units/consoles anymore and try to milk the PC market for sales.

That's how the two 'ecosystems' differ, let alone the Games, Services etc that are 'unique' to each - would you prefer to play MS 'exclusives', not just Starfield, but all/most from their 'history' (and 'Acquired' history) or would you prefer to play Sony's - Spider-Man, Horizon, God of War, R&C, Returnal, GT7, Wolverine, Last of Us, Uncharted etc - award winning games - as well as better Japanese partnerships. PS+/Game Pass differs, as does controller so it really does come down to preferences.

I can't tell you that you are 'better off' buying an Xbox or sticking with Playstation but if 'Starfield' is the ONLY game that interests you, you could sign up to Game Pass for a month or two, try it on 'Cloud' (even use your DS4 controller) and decide if you want to spend money on Hardware to play it - inc a 'cheap' Series S - perfect if you don't own a 4k TV.

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

@kyleforrester87 Maybe ask on PureXbox as well as other sites to get a broader range of opinions that may help. All I was saying is that asking a 'Playstation' based audience about leaving 'Playstation' for their most 'direct' competition, especially with the 'anti-MS' sentiment a LOT of PS fanboys that also have little/no experience of 'Xbox' to actually give a reasoned response. I wouldn't go into a Manchester Utd forum and ask if I should consider supporting Man City for example and expect a reasonable discussion.

That's also why I then went on to try and give some information for the OP to consider - things like 'alternatives' to buying an 'Xbox' - he could buy/own a Samsung TV with Game Pass built in and 'maybe' use that to play Starfield and/or any 'Xbox' exclusives and use that TV with his PS4 or PS5, maybe decide to pick up a cheap/used/refurbished 'Xbox' (inc Series S) to play the 'few' Xbox games they want and still upgrade to a PS5 for everything else or maybe just play on a laptop/PC - doesn't need to be a 'gaming' PC as they could play via Cloud.

I know 'Cloud' is the weakest way to play, but you could use that option to determine whether its 'worth' buying Hardware to get a 'better' experience. Use cloud to play until Black Friday deals come up, use it to have a look at the 'Xbox' library and have a better understanding of what the 'differences' are between Playstation and Xbox ecosystems to make a more informed decision on what will suit them the best.

At least asking on an Xbox site would likely give a more informed and experienced response about 'Xbox' in general but again, I'd give the same response there too that its perhaps not the 'best' place to ask about 'leaving' Playstation as the Xbox Fanboys would also give an inaccurate and bias opinion too.

Its those that tend to own and/or game on multiple platforms that give the most balanced opinions

@BAMozzy “Its those that tend to own and/or game on multiple platforms that give the most balanced opinions”

I disagree, but those types of people all too often seem to act like theirs is the only opinion that counts. There are plenty of people who only own a single system yet haven’t lost sight of the wood for the trees.

@PixelDragon never had an Xbox but I could easily list the obvious merits of moving over to that ecosystem from PlayStation. Sorry if you can’t!

Bought myself a Series X just for this game so it better be good. I've got Baldur's Gate 3 on PS5 for back up if it isn't.

Series X for quantity, PS5 for quality.

Game Pass is great but you won't find lots of AAA experiences like God of War, Horizon, Final Fantasy XVI and so on on Xbox, at least not anytime soon. There are tons of promising first-party games coming out on Xbox (like Starfield), but most of them are years away.

Once Microsoft makes more frequent releases, then it's worth getting a Series X. But having to wait so long for something new to play is absolutely frustrating in my opinion. Right now I'm only playing older games on Xbox, while on PlayStation I'm playing newer experiences like FFXVI. In other words, I'm enjoying my PS5 way more.
