Topic: Is Sony gonna take a fall for this?

Don't let the topic fool you, this is a major concern of mine.
We all know about the Sony situation going on in the UK, them being sued for overpricing their games and not long before that someone broke into the PS servers, took info and payment methods from players and PS did nothing (as far as I know) and the answer from playstation?
"Discovery content will not longer be featured in your library from Dec 31st" even when players have payed for it.
I've always been a PS kinda guy and It breaks my heart that a company I've loved so much for so long don't seem to care anymore about their costumers. It's like they have given up.
I don't know if everything is 100% and I apologize if I'm wrong but if they are, will this and can this be the end of a system and company if players decide to boycott everything? I don't know how it is around the world but even when it comes to their phones they hand out free stuff like headphones and in the beginning, A PS5 SYSTEM.... FREE if you bought one of their phones.
What are your thoughts guys

"someone broke into the PS servers, took info and payment methods from players and PS did nothing"
I remember about two months ago a group claimed to have hacked Sony servers and said that they wanted a ransom, but when Sony investigated it, it turned out that the group didn't get anything of value. Certainly nothing related to customers or partners.
If customer payment info had been stolen and if Sony had done nothing as you suggest, I'm pretty sure that would be criminal levels of negligence.

The court case will be interesting. It will go whatever way it goes. We could only speculate really but I'll be very surprised if Sony lose it.

That Discovery thing I'm not really qualified to have input on as I've never used Discovery. Do we know all of the details regarding why the content was pulled or if it will be added again later? Is it Sony or Discovery who is to blame?

I really don't see any of this as being the end of Sony or PlayStation.
I'm just one person but none of this inspires me to boycott anything or to worry about anything for that matter. The Discovery thing is more about the state of digital rights, but that's not just a Sony issue - That's for every media company to figure out.

My advice - Don't worry too much about corporations getting wins and losses.
Just play games and have fun.

Edit: Did I understand that part about buying a phone correctly? You could get a free PS5 if you bought a phone at some point?

@Shepherd_Tallon You used to be able to get a console, tablet, some other gadget…when taking out a new phone via a contract.
I think that’s mainly down to the phone provider/network though.
You could certainly get a PS4 that way years back, but not heard about PS5s.
Think MS is still doing it though.

As for Discovery I bet the buyout has just muddled things up & put a whole lot of red tape around digital ownership.
Either Sony removed it themselves to prevent any future legal troubles or they were asked to do so by WB.
They could also be trying to work out a new deal, but who knows 🤷‍♂️.

@AxemanUbbe Sony are going to be fine. They are doing the bare minimum as it is & are absolutely dominating the market. They’re going to be coasting until Switch 2, then I think we’ll start seeing Sony being more aggressive/loud.

@Fight_Teza_Fight Ah I got you. That makes sense.
And yeah, word for word on what you said about Discovery. I had similar assumptions. It's just one of those things where we won't know until we know, if ever. 🙃

Basically no. The discovery content is out of their hands because isn't something you can "fix" with money and good feelings, is a reality of digital content, if the owner says no then nothing will change it. DiscoveryxWarner has been erasing their own content from their services just because.
The sue thing happens all the time to big leader companies, just ask google.
The hacks well ... the fact that there weren't any news after the initial report tells you nothing happened to the users.

And don't get it wrong, it does't matter if it's sony, nintendo, ms, valve, etc. They don't care about you, they only want your money.

I doubt it - certainly the Discovery thing is covered by the Terms and Conditions you all agreed to, even if you never READ them. You never own the 'content' you only buy a 'Licence' to view/access etc that content and if you break the terms and conditions of that 'licence', you can face consequences - like 'losing' access or maybe criminal charges.

As hard as that may sound, it's also true with Physical - you cannot duplicate, you cannot distribute for money (like buy a Bluray and profit from selling tickets to watch in your own cinema) and Games require you to put the 'disc' in despite the Software being fully installed on your Drive - no disc to 'verify' you still own the Licence, no play. With Digital, the 'Licence' is locked to your Digital PSN profile so as long as you are signed in, the game will open up and be playable.

Old games - like N64's or PS1 games for example, require that specific Hardware to run on and are NO LONGER in production - Both are required to work because the Licence was 'built' in to the Cartridge, the Disc. The problem came from how to distribute something that can be 'copied' easily (illegally but impossible to track) so every 'Software' has a 'Licence' - even some Free software requires you to agree to terms and conditions of use before you use it and essentially agree a 'license' of use. Some Free software has a Licence 'Key' to unlock the Full Suite that Software offers. When you buy a PC with Windows, part of the price includes a Windows Licence fee...

With Discovery, they only had a Licence with Discovery - but as their Licence is ending, that has a knock on effect. I doubt Microsoft will be able to bring back Treyarch's Spider-Man 2 (great game) to Game Pass via Back Compat because of the Licence issue with Marvel/Spider-Man - which benefits Sony.

Point is, its likely something in Terms and Conditions that will avoid them taking a massive fall - as you put it. The 'market' price and Retail price are different things to. The games have a recommended retail price of $70 for example (and don't forget UK prices inc VAT too) so Sony & Microsoft are selling at full retail price because NO competition. Amazon, Game etc are ALL competing with each other and willing to 'lower' prices, take a 'smaller' retailer profit and hopefully selling more games than their competitors will be willing to take so they'll 'fluctuate around with each other until they basically can't won't go lower...

Because you can ONLY buy Digitally through Sony (Or MS Store on Xbox), they have no 'Market' competition. That 'could' change but then you could open up the Playstation to MS too and their Game Pass, selling 'their' Games on Playstation as a Store?

I don't know but I would really expect Sony to move on quickly and whilst they still have a LOT of favour in the banks with their Great games etc. You Buy a PS5, especially if its your first Console, you have access to the past 10yrs of Sony's catalogue, let alone the 'great' PS4 3rd party games, so they have a LOT in the bank, a good strong fan and user base, some great talent in their Studio's and a large portfolio of IP's - therefore, I think Sony will be fine. They'll have a restructure, new CEO and be looking ahead beyond any 'dips' that come along. They bounced back Strong several times during the PS3 era alone - the 'Launch' and its price, the early games weren't competing as well as 'expected' but 'bounced' back with the Slim and Uncharted, They had the big hack/PSN outage which lasted over a month - but bounced back...

The TL:DR is that all companies go through 'ups' and 'downs', almost always some 'crisis' somewhere to be dealt with and/or worked out - even if the eyes are looking in more when their outlook on the gaming side isn't quite as exciting as they hoped it would be.

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...

@Shepherd_Tallon thanx talon for some clarification on the matter and to the rest of you all as well. Here in Scandinavia the only way to get news is on the internet since our news don't cover gaming in general but you all have been a great help in clarifying alot 🙂👍
