All the talk and positive feedback on Baldurs Gate 3 has made me want to jump in to D&D again. I recently started a 5e campaign with me as a DM. I'm using a modified D&D podcast as a guide for my campaign, but otherwise making it up as I go. I used to play awhile back, but never DM'd before. Curious if there are other PnP role players out there. If so, what are playing? Or if you have any good ideas for my rookie DMing D&D campaign. I'd be happy to hear it.

@Elodin There's a few of us on Nintendolife where we have an active thread over there

As far.as rookie DM tips go just pick an adventure that sounds interesting to you. I suggest picking up the Essentials Kit It has everything a new DM needs and the adventure included is really good.

I don't recommend trying to take ideas from a Podcast as your games will almost guaranteed to be different then the Podcasts and my end up giving you a bad taste of D&D. While shows like Critical Role are great alot of new DMs try to emulate them and when the game doesn't go that way they are disappointed and frustrated. Each group is going to play differently and trying to emulate someone else's is not going to work. Your players may be interested in combat more or might want more role playing aspects.

As I said the best thing to is pick up the essentials kit and run through that, it's pretty easy and doest require much to set up. After you run that talk with your players and see what they liked didn't like about the adventure and then you can guage what type of adventures they like.

The three books you want to make sure you have are the Players Handbook, The Dungeon Master's guide and Tasha's. Read through those a few times to understand everything.

Also if you are interested in Baluder's Gate 3 look into the adventure Descent into Avernus as that is a prequel to Baukder's Gate 3.

Hope that helps.

@Tasuki thanks for all the tips. While I'm not a novice as I've played many years, I appreciate the advice. I did buy the players handbook and monsters manual. My take on the podcast is very loose, so I can go my own way. I just pick a few good ideas they have. Will see how it goes. One session in. I'll also check out Nintendo life forum. Thank you, much appreciated.

@Elodin Another book that is great to have is Tasha's Cauldron of Everything especially for the chapter on session zero. You can also Google session zero to find out more about it, but it's a great tool for a gaming group. Interested to hear how it goes for you all.
