Topic: The home screen needs to have a longer row of games, or a second row.

I like the PS5 UI, but its without its fair share of critiques. I could argue that Sony made changes from the PS4 UI to the PS5 UI just to be different, as well as that accessing friends on the PS5 UI is bad. That's another discussing.

When booting up the PS5, the list of the most recent games that were played are on display. This is fine, but I feel as if it's not enough. I'd prefer there being a longer row of games to scroll through, or a second row. I'd actually really dig an option to pin games too.

It may sound silly, and I am aware there is a game library tab at the end of the list, but I feel as if I completely forget about some games as they get quickly tapped out of the row of games.

I totally get what you are saying. I would even go as far as to say that Sony made changes from the PS3 UI to the PS4 UI just to be different!

In my opinion, the PS3 XMB was, and still is, the best and easiest to navigate UI on any console. I seem to remember it even received awards for its minimalistic and simple navigational style. The categories were left-to-right and the sub-categories were up-and-down. How simple and modest is that!?

On the PS4, I sometimes found navigating a bit of a struggle. For example, when in a chat party and trying to figure out how to go back to game chat. The whole layout of the menu systems and the procedures involved to navigate them were terrible in my opinion.

Enter: PS5!

Now, we are faced with two menu systems. One is accessible with a long press of the PS button and one with a tap of the PS button. Both menus look totally different to one another. I’m not convinced this is a step forwards - I think it introduces an unnecessary element of complexity to the UI and further clutters it even more than the PS4.

I was in a Battlefield V session the other day (on PS5) and joined a private chat party. A few minutes later, someone suggested we go back into game chat to talk to the players in the game. The procedure to do this was so complicated, I had to look it up on my PC!

You could argue that it’s just a case of ‘getting used to it’. You could also argue that a better design in the first place wouldn’t need getting used to.

I love the PS5 (only had it about a month now) but as far as the UI is concerned, there are three mantras which spring to mind. They are:

1. Less is sometimes more
2. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it
3. Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you have to

@Bat-n-Ball I absolutely agree. The user interface for the PS3 has yet to be topped. The PS4 user interface worked well for what it was though. In the case for the PS5 UI, while I do like elements of it, I think there is room for significant improvement. Hopefully they can be influenced by elements of XMB and slowly incorporate that, but I highly doubt it. For the time being, they should focus on getting rid of additional menu steps, and allowing us to have much more game visibility on the home screen.

I do, however, like that media and game apps are separate.

I'm just waiting for themes and the ability to put game genres into separate on screen boxes like ps4.

Also, hurry up and enable 1440p, Sony.

I can't take advantage of 120hz because my 4k monitor only outputs at 60hz and there's no way I'm playing in 1080p to get 120fps.

My 1440-144 monitor would let me keep a perfectly good resolution whilst taking advantage of the 120hz option.

For me, it's the most important QoL improvement they can provide.
