Topic: Unreal-Like FPS

Started Doom a couple of days ago and have been pretty impressed by the multiplayer experience. Feels very much like playing Quake.

Sadly it is loadout based rather than having a classic weapon pick up system.

Unreal Tournament and 3 were my favourite multiplayer FPS to play. Since the liklihood of the current pre-Alpha build coming to PS4 is either slim, or at least a while off; I was wondering if anyone has any FPS recommendations along those lines for PS4?
SciFi setting, decent spread of collectible weapons, snappy movement: that sort of thing.

I never played Unreal but the games i can think of are Titanfall 2 and Halo.

And is there an actual Unreal game coming out, or have I just imagined that? But i think it is pc only.

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

@JohnnyShoulder There is essentially UT4 that's in pure Alpha on PC. The way its being made (small team, tons of community support and input) makes me suspect that it could be a good while for it to hit consoles. If ever.

Titanfall could be a good shout!

@KALofKRYPTON Whilst you may be specifically looking for multiplayer, the new Wolfenstein games (from the same folk as Doom) have challenge modes where they take environments from the campaign and pack them with enemies to clear under a set time. The movement is fluid and the weapons get nicely bonkers the bigger you go (there's a whole alternate-future, steampunk sci-fi vibe going on). I'm not sure if it's loadout-based or not, though. I never really played much of the challenge mode myself.

If you're up for a bit of story, then they're really decent shooters (if you don't mind a little misjudged politics dragging down the end of The New Colossus). All of the DLC is, on balance, worthwhile.

Otherwise, yeah, Titanfall would be an idea to check out.

@RogerRoger I had the New Order. Good single player - if a little drawn out.

I am looking for MP though. To be honest, Doom MP is really good and I'm quite happy playing it.

Really would like a UT/Quake fix though. MP FPS really has become a bit convoluted over the years. For all of the advancements away from the Unreal Tournament bedrock - the sci-fi simplicity of speed, movement and weapon pickups seems rather lost in the sea of perks and classes and such.

May blow the £1.49 on Gog and buy UT'99 =D Though I really do not have a suitable keyboard & mouse.

I may just stick with Doom until Quake or UT4 actually show up on consoles...

It's dead now, but LawBreakers was a pretty awesome arena-ish FPS (although I wouldn't call it "simple", which is what you're looking for). One of my favorite games of all time, actually. I can't believe people didn't like that game, LOL.

If you're looking for a straight-forward arena shooter, Quake Champions on PC has a free weekend going right now. Yeah, it's not PS4, but...it's the only way to play a game like that! With a mouse and keyboard!

(EDIT: I said "Free weekend" but I meant "Free WEEK"...until 6/18!)

(EDIT EDIT: you get to keep the game forever if you install it and login before 6/18, actually! You only get to keep the Ranger character, tho, which is 1 of the 2 characters you get with the $5 starter pack. Also, if you hate Steam, it's the same deal via Bethesda's own game launcher)

@smelly_jr Yeah I am aware of Quake Champions.
It's been gathering a good following and looks pretty great. Unfortunately my laptop just isn't capable enough for it.

I also much prefer FPS with a controller anyway. Used to hold my own rather convincingly on UT3 again keyboard/mouse players 😁

Hopefully Quake does well enough for a port. The 'Champions' aspect does put me off a little - but from what I've seen the differences between them can be mitigated easily enough.
