The more I play the game, the more familiar it feels. The dark medieval fantasy aesthetic is the same as the Dark Souls trilogy. The upgrade system, weapons, difficulty, the gameplay, animations, even the HUD are all the same to me. Basically the game is just Dark Souls in an open world & it’s really not a new series at all.
It’s not a bad game by any means, but apart from some tweaks and the open world I couldn’t tell this game apart from the Dark Souls trilogy. It’s more like a Dark Souls 4 than a new series from FromSoftware. I think calling it Elden Ring was just a marketing tactic to get more people to buy it because if it were called Dark Souls 4 (which is what it feels like) people would have associated it with the previous three games and less people would’ve bought it because Dark Souls is known for being difficult and not accessible to all players.
Before the Souls purists misinterpret this I’m not saying this is a bad game. It’s very fun, but the game feels far too similar to the Souls trilogy & it should’ve been called Dark Souls 4 because I’m basically playing open world Dark Souls. Sekiro is a FS game and you can feel the difference between it and previous entries. Elden Ring is just more of the same and changed its name so it could sell more.
@Shigurui I realized it from the jump but I told myself “nah these are just trailers, it’s gonna be totally different”. Then when I played it I realized it. We just aren’t wearing fog glasses like everyone else. It was called Elden Ring just so more people would buy it.
Elden Ring isn't a marketing scam. They made it abundantly clear what the game is long before it released. I can't see this thread going anywhere constructive so I'm gonna go ahead and lock it.
