So my 55 year old dad just bought himself a ps4 because he decided to try gaming. This is a man who's last video game experience was playing Alex Kidd in miracle world back on the Sega master system in 1992
Is there anyone out there with an idea of what games he would likely be able to play seeing as he's missed nearly 30 years of gaming advancement.
If his last game was Alex Kidd you could try some platformers preferrbly one you can play together and you can walk him through the basics untill he gets comfortable with the controls other then that you could have him try out different games to see feels best for him
He needs to get his head around using 2 analogue sticks, one to move around and one to move the camera. It can be a bit like rubbing your stomach and patting your head. Once you can do that you can play pretty much every modern game, but it does take some getting used to initially. Other than that he'll obviously be used to any 2d side scroller.
Wonder Boy The Dragons Trap is a remaster of a Sega Master System which can out last year. There is also a rebooted sequel of sorts called Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom which came out last month.
My Dad started gaming at a similar age (he is 70 now), and likes the recent Tomb Raider games, the Far Cry games, BioShock, Dishonored, Prey and the Uncharted games. He liked Fallout 3 but struggled with Fallout 4 as he couldn't get to grips with the base building stuff.
Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
As a 45 yo who didn’t game between 15 yo ( Commodore 64) and 37 yo (PS3), l can relate to your old man. I would suggest story heavy games. What got me back into gaming was LA Noire and Assassins Creed being advertised on TV around 2011. I think playing the newer stuff would be better than playing games similar to the Sega. Ratchet and Clank is a good one to start with, Spider-Man as well.

This. Absolutely, first priority, this.
Games like the Uncharted series (start with The Nathan Drake Collection, then move up to Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and the superb sequel, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy) would be a good place to start because you can play them on Explorer difficulty, which gives you plenty of reaction time. They're also pretty standard in terms of combat - if you can shoot people in Uncharted, you can shoot people in almost every other third-person action-adventure game. I have a friend who hates dual-analogue controls, yet still plays and enjoys Uncharted for the story because of that low difficulty setting.
If he's looking for updated takes on the classics, however, then there's always Sonic Mania, a brand new 2D Sonic game that'll remind him of those good ol' SEGA days.
Later in the year, there'll also be Team Sonic Racing, and everybody can play a karting game, right? I mention that over Crash Team Racing because he's likely to have more of a connection to Sonic, given you mentioned he used to play SEGA consoles.

The crowd, accepting this immediately, assumed the anti-Eurasian posters and banners everywhere were the result of acts of sabotage by agents of Goldstein and ripped them from the walls.
I was also thinking of A Way Out. It's more Quick Time events and such then actual game play, plus you can play it with him. The story also follows like a buddy movie and such.

My big leap was from SNES stuff like Mario and Zelda to the PS2 and GTA3. Vice City was my second PS2 game.
GTA 5 would be the first game i would have him try. Gta off and online offers many types of video game activities to sample. Your father can also watch video of various games being played to get some idea of what he may like.
One thing of importance to determine is how your father feels about 1st person and 3rd person camera view. Some hate and or get sick playing 1st person. GTA 5 is not good for testing 1st person as it feels off from games like Fallout and Far cry where 1st person feels natural.
