Topic: PS3 Slow As Crap

Hello, I just bought a PS3 and noticed it's running insanely slow even after I restarted it and restored the memory or whatever you call it. When I'm at the menu of my PS3, it sometimes lags and going on the store is a chore because it constantly freezes and continues after several seconds of inactivity. Is there a way to speed up my PS3?

Going on the store is a chore on PS3 no matter what shape your PS3 is in or how fast your internet is. I'm not sure on the menu lagging? That shouldn't be happening. Did you buy it used?

The store has been slow since they updated it...it constantly kicks you off after a few minutes. Other than that, my system has run fast and I've had it for 4 years. It could be that you got your system used. The only thing with getting used, is that you don't know what the other person did to their system...they could have messed around with the Hard Drive, or abused the hell out of the system all together...don't forget that if younger kids had it, it could really be pushed hard. It all comes down to which store you bought it from used, and where you sent it away to get it repaired.

Alright, I only bought it because of the full PS21/PS2 backwards compatibility. But maybe it's not so bad. I'm probably just getting used to the system. Thanks guys!

how old is the unit? If its backward compatible it must be used and pretty old. I would clear the cache and rebuild the database its easy check youtube.

I would try turning off its internet connection - specifically from the settings menu - and give it a reboot. See if menu navigation is snappier when it's not constantly checking online for "What's New". PSN was redesigned a few months before the PS4 released, and it was kinda tuned for PS4. Also - welcome to PSN; it has been getting better, but it's notoriously slow. With an early build of the PS3, you might be better off using just physical discs, and going online every once in a while for trophy syncing and the odd update. Incidentally, PSN is undergoing maintenance on Monday for a few hours. If things don't get any better, maybe see about exchanging it or trading up for a newer model...? There are a lot of HD remasters of PS2 games now, some of which are in collections of 3 or 4 games. But if you have a large PS2 library I can understand wanting the backwards compatibility.

Hope the performance gets better. What games are you playing?

I need to replace the laser in the PS3 as well. As of right now, I'm not using my PS3 and am occupied with a bunch of retro systems and my Wii U and 3DS but once I get some pocket change, I will either buy a slim or just fix my launch PS3 @crawdaddy

PS3's that get 'warrantied' and whatnot are actually other people's systems sent in for repairs. I had 4 60GB models go out on me before I had enough. The last one went out a month after it's 3 month factory warranty had expired. I said scratch that, and just bought a newer, super slim PS3 and equipped it with a 500GB HDD. It's been absolutely fine for almost 2 years. Ever since Sony decided to make the PS Store on the PS3 much more animation based, and much less like the one on the Vita where you just navigate though simple menus, it's horribly laggy. Due both to the PS3's inherent lack of memory and the bandwidth intensive nature of the new PS Store application.

Ironicly enough, I just bought a PS3 Slim the other day and it works brilliantly. Really enjoying GTA V and God of War. It's takng time away from my Xbox One, 3DS, and Wii U but I'm enjoying it anyway @SaiyanFury

How reliable are the newer PS3 models? My father has a Slim 300GB model and it still works fine after about 4½ years! My PS3 is a Super Slim 500GB model.

Okay, now mine is going stupidly slow now. I can't even start-up Ace Combat: Infinity because it downloads the 8 super massive patches at around 5-6 MBPM...

@Rukiafan7:
Playstation has always been a pretty good, dependable hardware. Is your slowdown happening on things that involve the internet? if so, that would make sense because right now sony is having some hacking problems with psn. A group called "poodlecorp" is claiming responsibility. But this shouldn't last forever.

Unless you're talking about the ps store. the ps store has always been bad and unresponsive on the ps3.

Not had issues with the PS3 apart from the light of death apart from that always runs well. Noticed that the downloads seem to be really slow sometimes bt apart from that the old beast is doing well and hopefully will continue for many years to come. You can always try doing a full back up then format it and reinstall everything. Should resolve any issues you are having.

It's the online activity. Unless you're going to be downloading a bunch of items from the store or playing online, it would be easier to just turn off the internet from the system itself...you can still look at trophies and when you want to sync them or download more things, just turn it back on. Other than that, I have a lot of games downloads (over 300 to be exact) and a bunch of TV Episodes, Movies and of course my own family photos and family movies and music downloaded onto the machine, so no matter what, it takes a minute or two to fully show everything on the menu. Still though, the store wasn't as slow as it is now for the first couple of years, but I have the same problems with the store...it boots you out too quickly, especially if you are typing in a title of something to look for. Basically, I'm not buying anything else through the store...have everything that I wanted and downloaded, including game updates, so I just erased the store...but yeah, the system is kind of slow anymore compared to how fast the PS4 is. No big issue though, just keep trying!
