The PS3 Ain’t Never Going To Be Backwards Compatible Again, Ammunition For You Haters

Solution To Backwards Compatibility: PS2.

Solution To Backwards Compatibility: PS2.

Here’s some ammunition for your haters. Remember when the PS3 had no games? Yeah, that was your ammunition. Remember when the PS3 was too expensive? Yeah, that was your ammunition. Now those things have been rectified though, it’s time to bemoan the lack of backwards compatibility. Seriously guys, you better go out and buy the XBOX 360 instead, because we’re sure that system lets you play your PS2 games.

Ever since the PS3 Slim was announced on Tuesday we’re mainly heard a singular phrase from a large minority around t’Internet. “So, still no backwards compatibility?”. We’re really curious to know what the complaint would be if it did have backwards compatibility, but it looks like we’ll never find out. Sony’s John Koller says it ain’t ever coming back.

“It’s not coming back, so let me put that on the table,” said Koller, quite simply. He added that, “It’s not as big as a purchase intent driver as you may be hearing.”

We have the solution for everyone who wants to play PS2 games. It’s rather simple. It’s rather easy. It does take up a bit of space (not much mind) but it’s reasonable. It’s called a Playstation 2.

It's just pure greed by Sony, the only reason why PS2 is still alive today is to preserve its status as the world's most popular gaming console with nearly 140 million units sold, and trying to hold off the DS from returning that crown to Nintendo, due to the severely imbalanced marketing between Sony's 3 active systems, PS2 doesnt stand a chance.

Sony blatantly encourage retailers to retail the PS3 as PS2 B/C anyway, which of course brings so much distrust towards them, Just for the record I'm one of those muppets who bought a 60GB PS3 from eBay, 220 quid brand new, after it was discontinued. In real terms, the only muppet was the seller. Atm I have to admit, PS2's library still crushes PS3's, all Sony have been with the PS3's games is all talk and no action. Sony havent given a logical, factual explaination for its removal, if it wasnt in the PS3 to start with, that may of been justifiable. But the fact they had to use this to take advantage of the lack of games on PS3 is low. The fact that the PS3 is now profitable and would STILL make profit from the PS3 by including the backwards compatibility is as I said, greedy, arrogant, lazy, selfish and reliant. I can see the same thing happening to Sony that happened to Sega. But with Nintendo and Microsoft even more corrupt, I don't know where to turn to in this lame and unproffesional generation of gaming.
  • I didn't read your entire wall of text but I got the theme of it. Sony's market research says not many people want BC. It certainly shows them that few people who are capable of using it, actually are.

It's fine if you want to play PS2 games. Go buy a Playstation 2 instead of a PS3. Otherwise, quit yacking.

Business doesn't equal greed. I like when people cry corruption when companies adapt a business model that allows them to profit. Guess what: Sony wouldn't have discontinued backwards compatibility if it was feasible anymore. The number of people that frequently play ps2 games on the ps3 anymore is a minority. What, maybe an occasional person returning to play god of war 2, ico, what else...? Compare that to frequently renewing licenses for proprietary software, and keeping a big honking PS2 emulator in the base firmware of every shipped ps3, and the solution is to DROP IT. They are making their systems more efficient, and cheaper for the consumer. Making system software leaner is one factor that allows them to sell systems cheaper, upgrade available hard drive space, etc.

is the new ps3 120 gig conpatable
  • How do you mean? It will have 120GB of hard-drive space, yes.

That's a poor excuse for screwing consumers. Maybe , people wouldn't complain if Sony ever had a clue. Fanboys are becoming haters. It's simple, If Sony as a company would support their own previous and future products they would be a marked leader, byut intil then Nintendo will still kick there butt in sales repeatidly.

Having backwards compatibility is not the reason why Nintendo are beating EVERYONE in the console wars. I'll be very surprised if even 15% of Wii owners even play GC games on the Wii. A lot, and I mean A LOT, of Wii owners are people that are not even gamers, or even have an idea what a gaming console is.

I actually want Sony does bring back backwards compatibility just to see what people will complain about then. I really want to know just how many people use their original xbox games on the 360, I know I have used it maybe twice. SHIT! Gamers are worse then old people when it comes to complaining.

EDIT: That quote from John Koller seems kinda fishy because back in December 2008 Sony filed a patent for a CELL based PS2 emulator program that will run on all current and future PS3 models. I know it's not fake because I have seen the white papers myself. Besids, he is a marketing guy. You always take everything a marketing person says with a pinch of salt, I worked with a lot of them before. Plus, remember how a few short months ago Sony's mantra was "NO PRICE CUT". it's all about the timing man.

I completely agree with you. I don't know exactly when it happened, but there seem to be a large number of PS3 owners who have become stuck in whinge mode. No matter what Sony do, they moan... and when the perceived 'problem' is addressed, they simply move on to moaning about something else. And the times I've read "blah blah blah Sony sucks, I'm buying a 360"... I wish they would, and leave those of us who appreciate Sony's efforts to enjoy our gaming in whinge-free peace.

Then again, I currently have a UK launch 60GB system, complete with 4 USB ports, card readers and backwards compatibility, but plan to get a Slim model. I've used the b/c for exactly ONE game - Tomb Raider Anniversary. As much as I loved my PS2, I just could not go back to the games after playing the PS3, and traded it in a week later. I played Anniversary on my PS3, and that was the last PS2 game I bought.

Maybe I'll stick my 60GB machine on eBay and one of these whinging muppets can give me a small fortune for it.
