Sony Already Passing Playstation Motion Controller Kits Out To Developers

Sony's Motion Controller Tech Is Already Being Sent To Developers.

One thing that is paramount in making your new motion controllers a success is making sure that developers can go hands on with them. At the end of the day, purchasing power of the new peripheral will be dictated by the number of games that support it. Thankfully, Sony are all to aware of that, as Peter Dille confirmed development kits are already being given to third-parties and that they “couldn’t be more excited” about the technology.

“We’re a little bit past the research phase,” said Dille, during an interview with Gamespot. “We’re having conversations with the third-party community. The dev kits have started to go out to the third parties as well. They’re working on the tech. They couldn’t be more excited about it.”

Hopefully Sony have a number of internal studios working on the tech too, while R&D iron out the kinks and aesthetics. Of all the motion control demos at E3 this year, Sony’s impressed us the most. And we say that objectively.

  • Sony shouldn't venture too far from what makes their console great. If I want motion control then I would much rather buy a Wii, if I want incredible graphics and gameplay then I'll go for PS3.

Bit of a typo in the article there. "Could be more excited about it" turns what should be a positive article into a negative one :p
  • @ Nazo - ahh well spotted. Fixed. Sorry about that everyone.

Sony's large internal studios will be crucial here - just like it's the Nintendo games that drive the Wii. Whereas MS are going to have to rely heavily on 3rd parties to ensure the tech is a success, Sony will be able to get things going with 1st party games.

Another advantage is that being similar to the Wii it will be easier for the developers to get their head around - for example a PS3 version of Ubisofts ever popular "Rabbid Rabbits" games would be relatively easy to port over.

With Microsofts Natal concept it's a case of going back to the drawing board with game design. I also worry that it won't see the light of day until 2011 and worry that when it does the camera will be extremely expensive because of the tech that is in it.

Also using mocked up concept trailers instead of sicking to stage demos like Sony did leave MS open to a big backlash when the 'real' retail version turns out to be not quite as good as they implied - just look at the original E3 concept of the twin-HDMI PS3 or the 2005 Killzone 2 CG trailer.
  • @ Controller Wars - I don't think I could have put that any better myself to be honest. I totally agree.
