Played both Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West — Horizon Forbidden West wins, hands down in gameplay, graphics, attention to detail, environment, combat mechanics, replayability … Elden Ring is a rushed mess that doesn’t make any excuse for being an empty 3D platforming game. It’s nothing the reviews say it is. Large Open World? HFB has a larger world that comes with a high resolution 3D map to boot! There are more types of terrain to scale, climb, and fly about on as well. “Oh gee — you can jump in Elden Ring now” — HFB you can SWIM and FLY! Plus you have a wider selection of mounts, not just a horse that floats like paper. Elden Ring’s world is so empty, and the characters look like they were designed by the cheapest, most willing 3D student they could pull aside from their university work. The only reason Elden Ring’s popularity is a good thing is so BluePoint can make something better of it. Elden Ring is literally just the same thing over and over from the same series, over and over. There’s nothing new.

Horizon, on the other hand, improves gameplay dramatically from its predecessor. In Zero Dawn, you basically use the same upgraded bow, with the same armor throughout the game. Forbidden West forces you to actually switch between all the weapons on offer — and the monsters are quick and aggressive. Even at the max level, you have to strategize when taking down the bigger beasts to upgrade your more powerful weapons. I’ve had so many memorable battles where I’ve been down to my last healing herb, scrounging around for more in the battle field while dodging attacks and trying to wear my opponent down with smaller ones … it gets intense but not rote as Elden Ring’s battles almost always are.
