Button-bashing was common-place for farming, but everything else was pretty much tactical. I've just finished the game again about three weeks ago and I pretty much used magical attacks rather than attack commands.
@Fraught I agree to an extent; yes, draw in new fans but the point really is that the battle system (in my opinion) of the series generally is weaning towards live action hack-n-slash. I get that it's a 'remake', not a 'makeover', but for me, this is changing something so fundamental that it's a complete turn-off.
I suppose it's very similar to what happened with the Resident Evil series; the series shifted from 'survival-horror puzzle-solving' to 'arcade-action button-masher'. Fortunately Capcom saw the error of their ways and salvaged the series with REVII, but from an interesting FP mode, a different dynamic but the elements of the earlier series back in place.
Being 'the same but different' is fine, but taking away the very basics that made the genre popular in the first place could be a detriment to existing fans, but there will always be someone who likes it, but time will tell. I'm okay with the game being episodic due to the scale of the game.
Just finished the original FFVII (again) on Steam to whet my appetite for this one. As I keep saying, I am dubious with this battle system. It's like FFXV cotton-pads the next generation of video gamers. Awful battle system! I also hope that we can rotate between characters.
Just a thought... perhaps the ATB in the remake is a sort of 'timer', in the sense that you play as one character until the ATB runs out and then it defaults to the next character? That would make sense and this would keep the strategy element within the game.
I'll watch the game play trailers nearer the time. If it's FFVII with the FFVX engine, I'll be giving it a wide berth. I agree with Dichotomy; I was hyped until I saw that it was live combat.
I disagree with the whole concept of 'just play the original if you want a turn-based version of the game'. The idea is to remake the game with key elements, such as the story line, the materia system, breeding chocobos, etc. and I would have thought that the battle system was pretty integral. Otherwise, don't bother with a remake at all.
Too many open world hack and slash games at the moment. The only recent game that I believe to have had a decent live action battle system was the Witcher 3. That said, I'll have to reserve judgement until we have more information about it.
I didn't like the battle system in Kingdom Hearts. I think what (the original) fans were expecting was a similar game with today's console capabilities, bringing what could only be imagined in the 90's into reality.
I understand that the video game industry is evolving to accommodate several generations, but this is Final Fantasy, not Dynasty Warriors. It all feels very diluted.
Let's pray that Square Enix haven't used the same battle engine as Final Fantasy XV. That had an awful, clumsy battle system. Keeping my thumb on an attack button isn't my idea of challenging strategy. I finished the game on the first play-through on the hardest difficulty dying only once (and that was by accident).
The original Final Fantasy VII... now there was a battle system! I do think a turn-based battle system is essential to the genre, as all live battle systems since FFXIII have taken something away from the series (in my opinion).
Please, don't be another button-basher! I'd buy Tekken if that's what I wanted!

Well, switching between characters (i.e. Cloud and Barret) have been confirmed, as well as material being used as a 'skill':

"It's all about turn-based... 'bout turn-based,
No live fights."

Food for thought.
