I remember playing games like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, and I found myself excited in more tense moments when the frame rate dropped. The key is to make sure that they don’t happen when it would frustrate player control - in that game, they only really happened when I was mashing the attack button to whale on an enemy, and the game produced flashy effects to sell the impact of the hits. This helped essentially freeze the images of my blows in my eyes for a bit longer than they would have, and made the attacks feel impactful.
… so yeah, there are definitely times where a drop in frame rate enhances the game instead of hurts it.
Gaming consoles nowadays are the closest to regular PCs that they’ve ever been, in terms of hardware; it’s honestly a shame that such expensive devices are locked to only playing games, and even then, only what the hardware manufacturer approves for sale on its own store.
Meanwhile, Valve actually said, “who are we to tell you how to use your computer?”; the Steam Deck and Steam Machine will run anything it is physically capable of, no OEM approval required. If I wanna use my Steam Deck to run R, do some Folding@Home, write my own software, or even just browse social media, Valve certainly won’t stop me. And it really sucks that Sony, Microsoft, and even Nintendo don’t give us the same freedoms with the hardware they sell, all in the name of profits and “stopping” piracy or cheaters. (Microsoft has allowed some leniency with Xbox’s developer mode; and future Xboxes might just run regular Windows anyway, if rumors hold true.)
... look, if i'm honest, this looks like a kind of game i'd love to play. When I loved the HP franchise and knew nothing about it's creator, I would have bought this game in a heartbeat.
But times have changed. My life is very different. And I can't in good conscience pour money into the franchise any more. That's my decision and I have to own it.
If y'all are playing or want to play this game, okay. That's fine. I don't really blame you. But all the comments about "cancelling the cancel culture" and such really break my heart because it suggests that you KNOW of the controversy, you know WHY it's controversial, and still you choose to be smug and rub it in our faces.
Please don't do that. We're dealing with enough as it is. All I ask is that you quietly enjoy your wizarding game and leave those of us who have chosen to avoid it the heck alone.

I know it won’t change, but it’s nice to dream.
