@themightyant I think that there does not have to be a code, just simply a lock on the console itself. A physical copy of the game will not work on a 'platform' until launch date. So any copy of the game will work, with or without and update, at any time past the launch date. The consoles have to check in, every so often anyways (not a fan of that) regardless.
Consoles now, and have always been the gate keeper of what games go on that specific platform. No publisher can just make a game on the 'console' with out the permission of that platform. They have rules and standards, always have.
A physical game should work out of the box - to a degree, without needing an initial check in. Updates should be optional. But the console does not have to play that game, until its actual launch and then forever after.
I am for it, but only in certain cases. As long as the lock is console based and NOT game disc based. Simply. When you try to boot up the game on the console before launch, the console says no, regardless of dlc download, etc etc. But years later with an unopened game disc, the game will boot up just fine, and still play. It may ask to update the game, but will play regardless of whether it has updates. The thing is the software and physical disc will work, but the console is the gate keeper in regards to whether it work before a launch or when it is supposed to. The lock is at the console, and not the physical purchased disc. And the lock is only in regards to launch date.
I mean that is the whole point of a console now, is gate keeper. What games are released to their console, when, and with what content.
But again the disc physical will work on a console with or without an update.
Yeah, It does suck for those with certain limited download abilities, but.... You do own the game, and when you are done, you can give the game away to another, who then owns the game. Or resale it, barter it, trade it... it still has value, after the sale. And to be fair, once you put the game in, you can start playing it before it is completely installed and download it. After a certain amount of time. Wait, I should say, you have to install the main part of the game, and you can begin playing many ps5 games while the download is going on. Yeah, it is weird.
But again, rough for folks with limited internet access, this should be clearly shown on the front of the case. But for everyone else, awesome - to have a physical copy of this game.
Just not for me. I played the game all the way through. It is an amazing, stunning, and high quality AAA well made game. sigh... but as a long time FF gamer, long time jrpg gamer... I miss more turn based games with logic based combat, then twitch based action game. Even old action rpgs of generations past, would have more layered combat with thoughtful strategies.
The seizure inducing flashy combat, and QTE was just not my flavor of game. I appreciated the more adult story, but the story pacing and lack of interaction with the characters left me feeling they were 2dimensional meant to be reacted to only. Instead of FF characters you grow into, fight along side, empathize with and sometimes fear.
I understand this is the direction that AAA games rpgs may need to take in order to grab that next generation of gamers. Which is fine, I just hope that FF throws us a traditional jrpg ever so often.
