Re: PS5 Fans Furious As Microsoft Ships DOOM: The Dark Ages with Just 85MB on the Disc

@zhoont

Hugs and boops anyway

I actually think the whole review bombing thing is a bit hilarious and wasted effort by anyone who gets themselves in a frenzy about idle points. I wouldn't even know where to go to have a go of it.

Your point on the devs vs publisher is fair though, I was just looking for any trinkets to stick on top of the pitchfork.

I estimate I'm about twice your age. So you probably haven't hit recurrences of nostalgia yet. I have been heavily re-buying games primarily across 5th and 6th gen consoles because even though I started playing on earlier gens, they were absolutely seared into my brain with good memories/ timeframe in life.

I find it really sad that the current young and coming-of-age group that are unknowingly experiencing that with current gens, will largely not have the chance do go through the phase I and thousands (millions?) of my peers are going through currently in later years, and everything will be broken or fully unavailable, unless some explosion of current gen game backups and emulation happens, but even then it's not the same as re-collecting all the games you did and didn't play, and physically putting them in the real-world machine to play

While you undoubtedly won't resonate with that yet, hopefully you can see one angle why I think gamers should be pushing back against this trend.

@TicklefistCP game pass works for time rich / money poor people. For time poor / money rich(ish, as in don't mind buying expensive one offs), then single games are the way to go.

I have a PS, but if I had an Xbox, I absolutely would not be paying a subscription that I might go literal months without using, and instead go for the boxed game that I'll either drip feed, or binge play depending on my time.

It seems mad, but E33 is currently on my "buy in Jan 2026" timeframe, estimating how long it will take to get through things in front of that!

Their options are costs, profitability, or reach.

Focusing on the latter - keep the current fanbase and single player games, but go back to being "fun" and collaborative too to increase reach beyond the loner gamer (I include online multiplayer in that tag too) i.e. sitting on the couch by yourself.

What happened to "Buzz" and the party game genre. Deliver "fun" concepts that don't need a monster visual budget - ChuChu Rocket on the Dreamcast was amazing for a few drinks and messing with friends. They probably had one artist for that game but all the thinking went into the mechanics.

Create something that yea you can get lost in immersive worlds by yourself, but equally you can invite friends over, play with your spouse or partner, and enjoy with your kids.

I would classify myself as their primary fanbase of single player story gamer, but I'm incredibly unprofitable because I'm so short on solo time that I end up getting their AAA games a year or two down the line as it takes me so long to complete them. Whereas I've bought about 10 other games to try to play with my wife, and I would do far more if the gaming scenarios were wider - fun with friends, with my kids etc.

Just my 0.2c
