They've made a disc console version but aren't releasing the game on disc with the collectors edition? No steelbook? THE most collectible game item of the last two decades. Digital console also looks way better. The push for controlling our gaming using digital only services is atrocious.
@Llamageddon i definitely appreciate your point. Apologies for my lack of clarity though, I did say "if" its well made etc. I'm not saying this is as I too haven't played it yet, despite being a big fan of the series. I'm 35 now so my principles are outweighing my desire to play the game. I'm not paying for how out of touch bethesdas release of this is. Regardless of how good or not ids work is. I am glad they focused on the single player, but the release has soured it massively for me. I also saw it took 12 hours to complete despite the promise of it being twice as long as previous modern doom releases. I also see 2.5hrs or so of that is cutscenes. This idea of "lore building" in doom makes me believe they're trying to increase the merchandising of it. Doom has always been pretty bad with its lore, pretty inconsistent, but the story was never really what doom was about.
How is £70 too much for a single player game these days? What? If its made well and has a decent story and length of the game, why is it valued less because it doesn't have online? This is killing games. The fact people believe everyone wants an online game mode. So many games don't need it. Why does everyone need every game to do everything and be the same? Does doom need a battle royal mode? Team deathmatch? No. Thats why you buy cod or fortnite. Doom has always been a single player fps campaign. Sure 16 has a nice online mode. Fine. But I'm glad they focused on the single player. For that I'd gladly pay £70. What I dont like, is the lack of a disc steelbook, the download key disc and the weak collectors edition
It is a disgrace. Whether you play physical or not the principle should still disgust you.
The stastic that 4% of game sales are physical is probably part of the issue. What is the actual number of physical sales because the total industry revenue is massive. 4% of 100 billion is still 4 billion. But that percentage is what boards and accounts departments will look at an deem it not worthwhile. It would be interesting to know how many sales of dlc for physical games contributed to the overall numbers. Also, with microtransactions and the likes, there is huge profit generated that will absolutely skew the relevancy of those numbers. The amount of money spent on fortnite skins by kids will absolute make physical sales seem obsolete.
All of that aside and back to the principle, if I buy I game, I want to be able to put it in my console and play it if its on a disc. If we lose internet for whatever reason, its unplayable. Thats wrong. There's no reason for it. Make a game that works before you release it. Release it when it's ready rather than aiming for a release date. The constant online connection required even on steam games is so frustrating. Its all about publisher profits, ensuring they don't lose a single penny to piracy despite the monstrous profits they create.
Everyone gets upset about rockstar spending 1bil on gta 6 development forgetting they made well over 12bil from gta 5.
