@Neolit Hmm its very hard to compare it to anything even nowadays.
A series that kinda has the "spirit" of Shenmue, is the Yakuza series. but Shenmue is less brawling. it has fighting too, but its just one of many elements. But the game world is in a similar setup. a semi open city/world areal where you can walk around freely and talk to people. but in shenmue are more elements, and its more about exploring/investigating. especially the first game is alot of "detective game" and even some puzzle elements, with a virtual fighter combat system, learning new moves from masters(and level these moves up). Going from clue to clue.. What made shenmue so special back in the days was the world itself. every NPC had its own life(Daily routine), you could talk to anybody(they were all fully voiced 200-400NPCs). Not a single NPC was copy/past. and the world felt like it has its own soul and isnt just a videogame playground. the player had to addapt to the world and not the other way around (like open times for shops and so on). The only compare in that terms i can think of is Red Dead Redemption 2.. Shenmue 2 was more action packed, and felt more like a old school kung fu movie. and the game endet on a huge cliffhanger.. when the story started to get really interesting. thats why fans kept hoping. and thats what fans want from shenmue 3.. to go deeper into the story that felt like a true journey.
