The 'luck or cheating' you mentioned would happen anyway. Scalping is just an additional method on top of those that cause people to get screwed, it's not an either/or. Scalpers add no value whatsoever while extracting wealth. The people who do this are scum but they will always manage to justify their behaviour to themselves, as scummy people always do. It's only possible at all because some people are willing to pay more more than the retail price and the commodity is limited in supply.
I've never bought an item from a scalper and I got my PS5 a few months after release, so I personally didn't lose out due to their antics.
