I think this is a pretty nice change. I only play with the same couple friends usually anyway but if you don't want random people or friends to join there's a private party setting and also you can limit how many people can be in the party. Simple as that.
Best thing is with the new system is I can do all this while in game and not have to wait for my system to load the party screen and then load my friend list to invite people and stuff while my game is just sitting in the background and I can't see what's going on. Notification pops up while in game, hit the join button right there in the corner and ta-da! Done!
