It may have been away from the PS5 game for more than a year, but id Software has finally returned to DOOM: The Dark Ages with a major expansion that's much more than just another campaign. It does have that as a basis, providing more story, missions, and a new weapon to define the DLC.
However, on top of it all is an endgame — this is what sets Revelations apart from anything the developer's done before.
A term you'd usually associate with looter shooters like Destiny 2, the studio is essentially using the name as a catch-all for everything that follows its new single player levels. Completing all the DLC missions unlocks the endgame, and from there, you face an increasingly overwhelming difficulty curve in new challenges and additional routes through the levels.

At a quick glance, here's how the Revelations expansion is structured:
- Play the new set of missions to completion (six new levels in total)
- Revisit those areas for new content that the endgame adds
- Forge the Astral Key and defeat the Uber Boss
- Obtain the Master Arena Key and tackle the four Master Arenas
- Unlock new content in the Ripatorium
id Software projects it takes roughly 10 to 12 hours to get through all this; all told, the team estimates Revelations to be the same size as the two parts of The Ancient Gods DLC that DOOM Eternal received combined.
Before you get to that endgame content, there's a base level of content that continues the Slayer's story, adds all-new enemies and modified monsters, and most importantly of all: the Chain Spear. This is a new weapon that replaces the Shield Saw, and the entire DLC campaign is based around it and levelling it up.
The difficulty in the expansion is higher than the base game, and id Software stresses you must master the Chain Spear and all its abilities to conquer all of Revelations' content. It will take the whole DLC to fully level it up, and then there are extra skills found exclusively in the endgame.
It acts just like a spear would, except with some critical additions. You can throw it and slash with it, as you'd expect. On top of that, you can also slam it into the ground, launch it at a demon and use the Chain Spear to orbit around them, and then it also has a dash function and a grapple hook.
Despite how cool it sounds, id Software warns it'll take some getting used to, and you'll probably want to switch straight back to the Shield Saw at first. It wants you to persevere with the new weapon and gain a proper understanding of how it works.
"The feedback is great. It requires skill and timing," said Hugo Martin. "Once mastered, you will feel like a Jedi, slashing back and forth against Hell's worst. There is a ton of freedom and weapon tech to discover here. You can play grounded with it, using the orbit upgrade, you can phase charge executable demons. It has unique glory kills against the larger enemies. There are lots of opportunities for player expression. It is a DOOM tool worth your time to master."
Revelations is also bringing back the hub area, with the DLC offering a space to go back to with Metroidvania elements. There are puzzles to solve and hidden spaces to discover — id Software said it wants to make exploring it worth your time.
Finally, the reveal trailer for Revelations teased the return of classic levels from the franchise's oldest entries. These are found in the endgame portion of the DLC, and Martin states most of them are based on DOOM 2.
It's important to clarify these aren't the quite literal original levels taken from the classics and put into Revelations; they are faithful recreations of the levels with modern graphics and materials. Alongside the added challenge and boss encounters, the classic locations are another reason to continue playing Revelations once you've finished the base set of levels.
All told, id Software is projecting Revelations to almost the same length as the base game — if you were to mainline it, that is. It's a substantial add-on that leans into all the best bits of DOOM: The Dark Ages, whilst giving you a new toy to play with and an intriguing structure that extends the levels beyond one playthrough.
We might have had to wait a while for it to launch, but Revelations arrives bursting with content and more excellent FPS action. The chances you'll have another great time with the Doom Slayer are as close to certain as possible.
DOOM: The Dark Ages - Revelations releases for PS5 on 7th July 2026 as a paid DLC for the base game; it's required to play. Will you be checking the expansion out? Let us know in the comments below.

bring it on - this is what its about let the fun begin
Excited about the PSSR2 update as well!
Sounds like a really good expansion, bravo to ID.
This sounds great, and a welcome challenge. I enjoyed the platinum for this, but I didn’t find a lot of replayability to be had, so this looks to remedy that problem.
I’m definitely getting it. I loved the base game and ready for more!
Ok, that all sounds nice and everything, but what about the price?
This game had such a strange reception for a Doom game...
Will be interested to see how it sells
@8th_Observer Didn't realize they were doing that, thanks for the mention!
I really need to give this another chance
I will definitely be picking it up. Looks like a blast, and it is Doom.
