The PS Portal handheld has been a surprise hit for Sony, and there has been talk of an OLED upgrade launching at some point in 2026.

Now evidence of a revised unit appears to have been uncovered by The Verge (paywalled), courtesy of Wi-Fi Alliance documents submitted by the manufacturer on 21st September.

The updated devices – which correspond to ‘Gaming Console/Peripherals’ – are listed with the model numbers CFI-Y2000 and CFI-Y2105. The original PS Portal was CFI-Y1000, so this immediately indicates a step-up in the same product family.

Pertinently, the documents also note that the devices will run Android, which is consistent with the original PS Portal. Other PS5 hardware, like the console itself, operate using a custom OS.

The documents don’t really allude to any improvements in connectivity; the new units will run on Wi-Fi 5, which may disappoint those hoping there’d be an upgrade to Wi-Fi 6 or beyond.

I suppose it’s possible these new units may be a response to impending EU regulation, which insist devices like the PS Portal must include an easily accessible replaceable battery from February 2027.

But as we already have credible rumours of an OLED model, it’s possible Sony may kill two birds with one stone here.

Unfortunately, the PS Portal did get more expensive this year; it now costs $249.99/£219.99, which is steep for what the unit actually offers.

An OLED version would likely be more expensive than that, and I’m not sure the market would be willing to pay upwards of $300 for one of these.

But would you upgrade to a new PS Portal if that’s what Sony’s plotting here? Or are you happy with the one you’ve got? Are you not a fan of the format in general? Let me know below.

Would you buy an OLED PS Portal?
