Gran Turismo 7 developer Polyphony Digital really, really loves cars. You would hope it does, anyway, since it makes one of the most successful racing series of all time. However, the Japanese team is obsessive about them, and it's proud of it.

There's no better display of that in its brand new Gran Turismo 7 opening movie, which has been updated and refreshed to coincide with the release of the PS5, PS4 game's Spec IV update today.

This is a video that continues on from the standard PlayStation Studios logo clip at the start of all first-party game, the one featuring characters from the game you're about to play. Most of them end there and get to the main menu, but not Gran Turismo 7.

In Gran Turismo 7, you get a new six minutes and 40 seconds opening movie. You can watch the whole thing below:

It's a love letter to cars, racing, and the act of driving. I don't quite have the same level of appreciation for cars, junctions, and roundabouts, but I can certainly respect Polyphony Digital going all the way with its obsession. It's the one making the games, after all; I'm just over here using Google Maps to make sure I get somewhere as quickly as possible.

The thing is, though, this is an updated opening movie, and the one Gran Turismo 7 shipped with all those years ago was actually even longer. The game originally had an eight-minute opening movie! This appreciation carries into the full game, where you'll find history lessons on car manufacturers and all the racable vehicles in the game.

Polyphony Digital has delivered free monthly updates for the driving title for years now, and the update to today's Spec IV version is one of the biggest yet. To mark 30 years of the franchise, it's also bringing out a themed PS5 controller in the coming months.
