Wolverine / Spider-Man Japan Sales

Insomniac sold 20,039 physical copies of Marvel's Wolverine during its first week on the market in Japan, which marks a huge drop in sales when compared to the Marvel's Spider-Man games in the region.

Here is how the game's opening week sales compare to all the Insomniac-developed Spider-Man games, as per Famitsu data:

  1. Marvel's Spider-Man (PS4) — 125,154 physical sales
  2. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (PS5) — 77,348 physical sales
  3. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (PS5 + PS4) — 41,522 physical sales
  4. Marvel's Wolverine (PS5) — 20,039 physical sales

Of course, a number of circumstances are at play here that likely affect the sales impact of Marvel's Wolverine in Japan, especially when comparing PS4 to PS5 sales. This data also doesn't include digital purchases.

The PS5 hasn't proven as popular as the PS4 in the region, resulting in a smaller install base for the current-gen system, as Japanese players predominantly play on Nintendo Switch 2 this generation.

However, looking at Marvel's Wolverine compared to Marvel's Spider-Man 2, both of which are only available on PS5 during their opening week, the fact Wolverine couldn't even sell a third of what Spider-Man 2 managed is eye-opening.

There's also the fact Spider-Man is a more popular superhero than Wolverine, so the inherent interest in the web-slinger gives him a wider audience from the off. Still, Wolverine is one of the more popular Marvel characters about.

The game has been met with a high level of criticism despite a generally positive set of reviews, with our own Marvel's Wolverine PS5 review scoring it an 8/10. Since launch, developer Insomniac has been addressing the criticisms by lowering the visibility and reliance on Logan's scent trails.

These kinds of Marvel games have long legs, though, so Wolverine will likely continue to sell in the coming months and year. It could pick up pace as discounts and sales come around in the future, but I don't expect it'll come anywhere close to what Peter Parker managed in Japan after this sort of debut.

If you were to take a worldwide look, Alinea Analytics claims Marvel's Wolverine has sold 1.9 million units, but the outlet's approach to gathering that data is continually challenged and shouldn't be relied upon.
