I thought Splitgate was supposed to make shooter games great again.

Firewall Ultra 😓 such a shame Sony fumbled that one. First Contact Entertainment were in the process of improving the game when Sony shuttered them, and other than a vague "Sony will now maintain the games servers" they went radio quiet on the game so there was zero confidence for new players to buy the game... Which was only further compounded when Sony shut Concord down within a couple of weeks, showing that the Firewall Ultra servers could also be shut off at any time without warning.

And just to add insult to injury, Firewall Zero Hour on PSVR 1 used peer to peer hosting, meaning as long as there are players it can effectively run indefinitely (and there are still people playing today!), but for Ultra the decision was made to have server hosting, meaning if/when those servers are taken offline (as they will be next month) the game becomes unplayable online.
Personally I always thought that Sony should have a) given First Contact Entertainment time to change the hosting to P2P to ensure the longevity of the game before they were closed down, and b) Sony should have added Ultra to PS Plus Essential or at least Extra to increase the player base, and perhaps have a chance at selling some of the in game items.

It's a shame to see the game crash and burn so badly, but it was almost inevitable given how little a chance Sony gave it.

Cue the "This is why we need discs" comments from people who just read the headline, not realizing that only 1 game is actually getting delisted and that even if you have your physical copy, it isn't going to keep the online servers up.

It's a lost battle. Same as when we lost against microtransactions, when we lost against games going up to $70 minimum.

I've seen this happen enough times to know when something is pointless and no matter how hard you try to fight this good fight, it's already over. The suits have already analyzed how much it will cost them when the "no physical no buy" people dip out and have calculated that it will be a negligible impact. I'm just tired of seeing people post that same thing everywhere. It's not that I want Sony to do this, I just know when the fight is already lost.

@ATaco Couldn't agree more - they already know that Discs aren't adequate as a delivery medium because of limited capacity and only have an early build as well as won't run games because they are too slow so what's the point of persisting when they need the Internet to update the build and/or supply the rest of the software?

As for the protests, I'm sure that the saving they will make from not manufacturing Physical, not distributing them globally and not losing as much to 3rd Partys like Distributors, wholesalers etc as well as not losing sales to used markets and having paid for unsold stock they manufactured and the fact that most of those who buy Physical will buy Digital to play the latest games, they won't lose money and maybe will actually be better off as they'll make more money per sale of Digital. They can afford to lose a chunk of the Physical only buyers and still be better off so they certainly won't reverse their decision. The costs of making and shipping physical products is rising and even Hardware with a Physical drive costs more than without to ship because it adds weight.
