Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Guidance

Whether we like it or not, in-game guidance systems have become a staple of modern gaming.

Sometimes this stuff can feel incredibly heavy-handed, like the controversial 'fart gas' in Marvel's Wolverine. Other times, it just comes off as a bit annoying, like when Atreus and Mimir constantly offer up puzzle hints in God of War.

And so it may be a little concerning to hear that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will feature "more on-screen guidance" than both Remake and Rebirth.

Director Naoki Hamaguchi, who's featured in countless interviews over the last couple of weeks thanks to Tokyo Game Show, has offered some insight into the aforementioned design choice via social media.

He writes: "In Revelation, we've included more on-screen guidance than in our previous titles so that even players who are not familiar with open-world games can enjoy the experience without getting lost."

"By following that guidance, players can naturally explore the world as it gradually opens up, revealing new places to discover and more things to do."

At this point it's worth noting that in the preview build of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation that our editor Sammy got to play recently, the open world map was covered in activity markers and progress trackers, to the extent that Sammy actually felt completely overwhelmed.

So based on our own experience, Hamaguchi ain't kidding.

Thankfully, though, the talkative director acknowledges that not every player may want to have their hand held across such a vast adventure.

"Some experienced open-world players have told us that the guidance can feel a bit too strong. Because of that feedback, we're also considering options that would allow players to customise how guidance is presented."

Here's hoping, then, that visual guidance options are added to the game's settings. It's always nice to be given a choice when it comes to this kind of thing.

For what it's worth, loads of the replies to Hamaguchi's post are saying that they'd appreciate such options, so I'd be surprised if nothing gets added in the finished release.
