Sony is yet to detail the PS6 in any official capacity, but we're now at a point where we can make a series of educated guesses regarding the next-gen console and its potential features.

A couple of which are bound to cause a stir...

So, first off, we've got an idea about the price tag — primarily due to the skyrocketing cost of components. Sony already hiked up the PS5's price back in April, and at the time of writing, the PS5 Pro costs a whopping $899.99 / £789.99 / €899.99.

It's fair to assume, then, that the more powerful PS6 will command a similar fee — and it's certainly not hard to imagine it pushing the dreaded $1,000 mark.

We could be looking at the world's first four-figure console, then, and that'll clearly be the biggest hurdle for many onlookers.

The bad news continues with Sony's much more recent decision to kill physical games. Starting from January 2028, the company will no longer manufacture discs for PlayStation systems.

This means it's highly likely that the PS6 will not ship with a disc drive — much like the PS5 Pro. It's almost guaranteed to be a digital-only console, forcing players through the PS Store to purchase software.

As is the case with the potential price tag, this complete lack of support for physical media will no doubt be a deal breaker for some.

But would either of these factors put you off buying a PS6 entirely? That's really the question that I'm asking today.

I know it's hard to follow those two points up with any kind of positivity, but Sony should have some tempting next-gen features up its sleeve.

If the rumoured $1,000 asking price is accurate, then you've got to assume that the PS6 will be fairly future-proof, with Sony aiming to bring the system's cost down over time. Start high, end low.

That means impressive technical performance across the board. Support for 120 frames-per-second at 4K resolution is surely the goal, and the PS6 is bound to sport its own, much improved version of PSSR — the PS5 Pro's AI-driven upscaler.

Backwards compatibility will no doubt be pushed as a selling point as well, and I'm willing to bet that there's going to be a lot of crossover between PS5 and PS6. The two consoles will probably be treated as a single ecosystem, at least until Sony can find a foothold with production costs and the resulting price tag.

But maybe that's not such a good thing if your PS5 collection includes loads of discs...

I don't know about you, but I feel like the PS6 is shaping up to be a seriously hard sell. At least, based on the (relatively) little that we (kind of) know about it.

To be fair, though, we obviously don't have any insight into key factors like launch games yet. A strong enough software lineup can often be enough to quell concerns — but I think the PS6 is going to need one hell of a selection to overcome its predicted downsides.
