Update []:

While the future of Arkane Lyon seemed precarious following today’s updates, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier has followed up with more positive news.

He says there are “multiple paths being explored” to save the studio and he’d “be surprised if it is shut down”.

He does warn, however, that “anything can happen during negotiations”.

Original Story: While the future of former Xbox first-party devs like Double Fine and Undead Labs has already been determined, it’s been a while since we heard word from Arkane Lyon, the studio behind the acclaimed Dishonored games.

Now an article by Le Monde (paywalled) gives an insight into the struggles of the French studio, as it races to find a buyer before a 13th November deadline.

As you may recall, Microsoft was unable to close the studio immediately due to a consultation period demanded by French law. The Redmond firm is obligated to try to sell the studio, but a mandated three month deadline is now coming to a close.

The team has until 13th November to find new funding, otherwise the studio will be shuttered and around 217 jobs will be lost. According to the report, negotiations are ongoing.

Union representatives claim the team’s current project, Marvel’s Blade – which was announced in 2023 – is “nearing the end of production”. Spokespeople for the studio believe it will be a success if it sees the light of day.

But those same people blame Microsoft for its “disrespectful” treatment of the team.

“We are collateral victims of Xbox’s change in strategy,” one of the people said.

As alluded to above, Microsoft has already shuttered UK studio Ninja Theory, and offloaded various other teams like Compulsion Games et al.

It’s also in the process of reorganising its entire first-party operations, seemingly sunsetting Xbox Game Studios as it places its remaining teams under the umbrella of Bethesda and Activision. Its objective is to focus on big franchises like Fallout and Call of Duty.

The scary part is that the platform holder is not done yet: it’s cut over 1,800 jobs so far, but more redundancies are coming, as it aims to eliminate 3,200 roles overall.
