Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is officially available for everyone, after a complicated release rollout which saw the campaign unlock for some last week and extraction mode DMZ for others on Tuesday.

Feeling bullish, Infinity Ward opened up the competitive multiplayer suite earlier than expected overnight, which means you can play the full game now. Our review will follow in the coming days.

But the early impressions from franchise fans have been brutal to say the least.

Charlie Intel, the series’ biggest fan site, described the competitive multiplayer as a “mess” earlier today.

It wrote: “The maps are not that good. Spawns are still broken after the beta. And skill-based matchmaking is cranked up to the max.”

As we reported earlier in the week, feedback for the campaign and DMZ mode have been broadly very positive, so this is a real kick in the gonads.

To be honest, as a casual observer, I feel like this happens with every Call of Duty game. The title usually gets patched and improves its reputation over time.

It’s going to be really interesting to see how this year’s game sells, to be honest. Call of Duty is always big, but recent efforts have underperformed, and Activision will need to meet expectations this year.

That’s going to be tough with GTA 6 looming right around the corner…
