Update #2 []:
Activision has officially announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
Here's the announcement trailer, with a mix of gameplay and in-game cutscenes:
As the teaser, well, teased, Modern Warfare 4 is centred around Korea.

"War erupts on the Korean Peninsula as North Korea launches a full-scale invasion that threatens to destabilize the world in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4," reads the official blurb. "A young squad of South Korean soldiers fight to survive on the collapsing front lines, while half a world away a vengeful Captain Price wages a personal war from the shadows as he stays one step ahead of those hunting him. As Price's off-book mission collides with the forces behind the invasion, the war spreads beyond anyone's control."
The campaign promises to be quite varied, featuring "trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters combat in New York, high-octane chases through Paris, SAS night raids in Mumbai, and city-wide assaults to reclaim occupied territory."
Teased at the end of the trailer is a reveal of DMZ, which is this game's version of an extraction mode. It'll make its debut on 7th June, presumably during Xbox's showcase, which is scheduled for the same day.

Update #1 []:
Activision and Infinity Ward are now officially teasing the next entry in the Call of Duty franchise.
This teaser, which is being live streamed right now, appears to further confirm the game will be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4:
The video's title, when translated, is 'Camera 004 | LIVE'. The number four in there is pretty telling, of course.
The title is originally in Korean, so we expect that location will be part of the campaign.
The Xbox showcase is also not far off at this point. It, along with PlayStation's State of Play and Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest, all take place next week, so there are several opportunities for Activision to unveil MW4.
We expect the Xbox show is most likely, but you never know.
Original Story: It looks as though the 2026 Call of Duty (not the 2026th, although it does feel like there have been that many) will be subtitled Modern Warfare 4.
While there have been some fake leaks doing the rounds online, the very reliable billbil-kun posted the following, which all but confirms what's next for the popular shooter series:

Obviously the image is obscured, but it isn't too difficult to work out what the title says.
It's presumed that the game will be officially announced during Xbox's upcoming showcase on 7th June.
Developer Infinity Ward recently made a post teasing the new game, calling it "determined, bold, relentless".
If I could be determined, bold, and relentless for a moment, I find it very amusing that we're so far down the rabbit hole that we've seemingly reached Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which is a totally different game to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Don't confuse the two!
Hopefully it looks solid when it makes its debut. The series could do with a win following Black Ops 7, which was a bit of a low point.
Anyway, are you excited to see the new CoD? Tell us in the comments section below.

So many Black Ops and Modern Warfares
Considering Acti threw Tryarch to the wolves to buy IW time to make this year's entry, I hope it's good.
I mean, I don't really care, personally. But I'd rather fans get a solid game, and would prefer not to suffer another round of discourse misremembering Advance Warfare as a classic.
"I find it very amusing that we're so far down the rabbit hole that we've seemingly reached Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which is a totally different game to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare"
The world gets more confusing every day to anyone aged over 20
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Honestly they should just rename Call of duty with the year at the end like sports games do.. Cod: 26, Cod: 27 etc
Dear god. It never ends.
Wonder if this is finally the game for that legally binding Nintendo agreement, or if they plan to just ride the 10 years out? Then again, not much they agreed as part of that deal has transpired.
Nothing says confidence like see-sawing between BLOPS and MWs. What a sad, sad state CoD is in right now. At least call it Modern Warfour.
@JB_Whiting To be fair, everyone got really angry when they tried for anything else. Ghosts and Advance are still regularly considered two of the worst entries. Infinite is one of the most downvoted videos in YouTube history. WWII and Vanguard were kinda ignored.
You could argue that's more to do with the state of the franchise at that point. But MWremake and Black Ops...uh whichever one was considered a return to form definitely inspired more hype and sales than any of the others.
Warfour is a masterstroke, though.
So MW4 will be same as MW3 which was the same as MW2...
I'm gonna be there. I still play MW3 regularly. Best MP suite CoD has had, in my opinion.
That said, I can't help but find the humor in the inevitable confusion between CoD Modern Warfare 4 and CoD 4 Modern Warfare.
The surprise here is that they're only at iteration 4. Reached a stage where they're all indistinguishable to me anyway. Haven't touched COD with any significant playtime since the ps3 days and not at all on ps5 and have no interest in changing that.
@Bluemoon2008 It would be pretty fair to say this'll actually be Modern Warfare 7. Hell, if we wanted to retroactively say Advance Warfare and Infinite Warfare were entries in the Modern Warfare sub series — a la Black Ops Cold War — we can really say this is Modern Warfare 9.
It's never going to be Modern Warfare until all sides are just arguing and threatening each other over Twitter or X or whatever we're meant to call it now.
The crowd goes mild!
Give me a campaign with no futuristic s***e, no online trophies and I'll play it. 😂 Miss the days of veteran playthroughs on a great campaign
If it’s anything like MW3 then this is going to be one of the biggest pieces of s**t in cod campaign history.
If it's not groundbreaking. I won't touch it.
How are people not bored with CoD yet?
@RoomWithaMoose It really is a sad state of affairs for Treyarch. Treyarch hasn't had it own actual CoD entry since Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and that didn't even get a campaign. Coldwar, 6, and 7 has all been co-op developed titles with Raven Software doing the campaign, and Treyarch solely working on the multiplayer and zombies. I would love to see them helm a title once again... Cause World at War, Black Ops, and Black Ops 2 were good games. BO3 was Okay.
@MickOnYourFace How are people not bored of McDonalds.
I'm interested in the campaign since Modern Warfare 3 ended on a cliffhanger and this one is on a new/updated engine. I just want to know if my skins will carry into the next Warzone since I've heard of a reset with this game, if it doesn't I don't think I will bother with this outside of the single player campaign/story. I'm also sick of Black Ops and want to change from that.
Hate on it all you will but I'm not ashamed to say I thoroughly enjoy COD and buy it pretty much every year. The MP experience is unmatched and there's a reason the game sells as well as it does. Do I think it's perfect or that every year's iteration is amazing? No way. But I more than get my money's worth with every installment and the game is always a solid, polished 'known quantity' which is more than I can say for some.
They could freshen things up by having Americans actually use the second amendment for it's intended purpose and take up arms against an autocratic, fascist and hostile federal government. No tip toeing around it like Far Cry 4. I'd buy that for a dollar. Or maybe 50.
3 Modern Warfare games in 5 years is way too much, they really need some variety in the line-up.
Again with Modern Warfare. Seriously it is getting old seeing Black Ops and Modern Warfare. Probably will wait for a deep sale if the campaign is interesting or just watch it on YouTube.
@get2sammyb If that's you saying it's boring when we know you're the multiplayer site expert where do you leave the rest of us 😅
So much negativity here towards CoD. I wonder if any of that is purely anti XBOX rhetoric. 🤔
@8thDoctor They tried variety and people crap on it.
Wow, daring today aren't we.
How very lame even with gamepass I'll never touch this game no thanks 👍
@SMJ my guy dont mind them, they want cod to fail so microsoft fails as well but this isnt bungie and marathon😂. Tbf to most people, i hated cod as well (do enjoy mw but i still aviod blackops games) till my adulthood, but can now understand why my older sibilings and friends enjoyed the game (its not time consuming of a game). But like someone said earlier cod is abit like mcdonald.
Also massive also.. any one else lamenting the death of splitscreen couch play in FPS games.. like i had a friend over playing old school world at war campagin and even halo coop and splitficition, mario karts.(so much fun even till now)... man we legit lost an important social aspect of gaming i think needs to desperately come back.
I lament the loss of most things I love and would love them to come back. Not just in video games.
@AverageGamer it's been a long time since they last tried variety. When MW4 releases 8 of the last 10 games while have been either MW or BO, with the 2 WW2 games rounding it out. It's time to try again, who knows maybe the people that grew up during the more creative phase will be more receptive to it than the older core were back then.
@8thDoctor And why is that? We had Ghost, Advance Warfare, Infinite Warfare, WW2 and Vanguard which was all critically panned. Infinite warfare was so critically panned that it forced Infinity Ward to reboot Modern Warfare. The market has spoken. They don’t want variety
@SMJ nah, it’s just really stale at this point. imagine if activision told there devs to make a new IP. infinity ward is only known for one game & treyarch developed other games before
@nomither6 And imagine if PlayStation actually did something with their studios.
I'd rather just play Marathon when it's Free to Play as it should be.
contrary to popular opinion - I enjoy these games they provide a few hours of escapism and that's all I want from a game, a bit of fun a few missions and down the enemy - OK the naming convention gets a little messy but what you gonna do. unfortunately they lack imagination on that one haha
@SMJ Like release Saros, Marathon and Wolverine this year?
Collapse Of Dignity
Call Of Desperation
Removed - flaming/arguing
@SMJ Who said anything about doing well? You implied ps studios were doing nothing. So you were given 3 examples of them releasing games this year. Don't move the goal posts.
Removed - discussing moderation
@get2sammyb took the letters right out of my mouth 😂
So another game key disc this year with only an app to download the entire game, that when disconnected from the Internet, it appears as Modern Warfare II?
Okay after my initial "zzzzzz" I will say the Korean setting appeals to me somewhat.
My main gripe with COD over the past decade or more is a lack of compelling narrative/protagonist/antagonist. They obviously have to tip toe around real world geopolitics to a certain extent but the characters and stories they come up with always fail to interest me - probably because the real world is bat ***** nuts and the good and bad guys are subjective at best. Then you've got the same old combat loop, bombastic but heavily scripted set pieces and just a general lack of fps satisfaction - in my opinion. The multiplayer will always pull the young folks in.
I really enjoyed MW2019 campaign. interested in this, actually using real, not fictional, countries is a good choice.
most interested I've been in a COD in 4 or 5 years, only buy these for the campaign.
No thanks. I'm going to play more 007 First Light now.
Many people moan about COD but it will still be one of the best selling games of this year.
Also looks like no Fable this year as Xbox have to fit in Gears of War E-Day too.
Nothing worst than a military shooter.
It's quite ironic how western media keeps painting N.Korea negatively and promoting the country like they're very hostile and a global threat to everyone. But the reality is far from the agenda after what the US done to Venezuela, Cuba, Iran, and threaten to invade and take over Greenland.
Anyway. This game looks kinda eh. But i don't expect much from Activision these days 🤷♂️
Surprised to see this version come to Switch 2. Sony only managed to have the below average Declassified on Vita back in the day. Great time to be a Switch 2 and PS Portal owner.
I don't really get the so much hate towards COD, in general. If it sucks (like the lastest black ops) it's okay, but if it's good why the ranting? Okay, we know nothing about this one, aside from this trailer but the last two games from this studio was quite good.
@PuppetMaster Well, an American studio certainly isn't going to make America the villain of the story 😂
The reality is that North Korea, Russia, and Middle Eastern countries are convenient enemies in video games because their outrage doesn't make a large difference commercially. It's why you never see China as an enemy in video games - their outrage and boycott would have a substantial impact on the game's sales.
To their credit, a Korean War scenario sounds interesting.
@PuppetMaster You don't think North Korea should be painted negatively????
Please... explain why
@wildcat_kickz
I would love to see at least one American studio try to do that.
Homefront and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory actually had China as an enemy. iirc Battlefield 4 also had China as an enemy.
@PuppetMaster
The problem is that these games make most of their money in Western countries, especially in the US. Portraying the Americans as the bad guys would lead to players not being able to connect with the player character.
Even the games, where the Americans are the bad guys like Spec Ops: The Line, BioShock Infinite, Deus Ex, Metal Gear Revengence (even MGS to a certain extent), are rather subtle about it.
@PuppetMaster Homefront was also North Korea
The legendary Captain Price returns? Sold, and good call getting out of the way of GTAVI
Actually looks really good. This could tempt me back.
@PuppetMaster Regarding the Chinese as villains in games, I think you'll find them lacking ever since China became a more dominant market for console video games. Also true in movies and TV. Remember when CoD whitewashed Tiananmen Square from their Cold War trailer?
Graphically stunning as usual but I don't play online at all so I hope the campaign slaps, I really liked the new MW2 and I would be down if the campaign is good. Launching right before GTA though so I probably won't be blowing up the budget on it until much later
@get2sammyb pfft, yeah, we know why
@TrollOfWar
I think right now there's plenty of Americans who's mature enough to understand that their country did very nasty and unspeakable stuff against other countries. Heck, with all ICE did against Americans themself, I'm sure they can relate if someday there's a game where American is the enemy and the lead is fighting against them.
@wildcat_kickz True. I guess we will see more Russia, Germany, North Korea, and Arabs / the Muslims as villains.
@PuppetMaster To be fair, there are games that portray the US government in some form as the villain (Watch Dogs, Metal Gear, Deus Ex, etc.). You could even consider some of the Black Ops games in that camp, but I don't think you'll find a modern military shooter with the US gov't as an overt antagonist (unless the heroes are also American). It's the wrong type of game, from a business perspective, to make that kind of statement. Conservative America probably makes up a large portion of the audience for CoD, so you don't necessarily want to alienate them.
I had such a blast in DMZ (and Gunfight in MW19), so if those are back and solid, they may have a customer here. Otherwise not particularly hyped.
@RockyOfficial That's an informative article, thanks for sharing. I wasn't aware how the US government is funding entertainment as a means of propaganda.
Is MW2 and MW3 (new series) worth playing?
They should make a Call of Duty where you play as an Activision employee trying to fight your way out of Activision HQ so you can go work at a studio that lets you work on anything other than Call of Duty.
@PuppetMaster that is America. The rogue state full with terror*st in suit and tie. Don’t trust anything from the satan*c Hollywood.
@RockyOfficial I was already somewhat aware that the NRA (National Rifle Association) might be tied somehow to these games with all the licensed real-life weapons.
But I didn't know the US government was funding stuff like the Marvel movies to have the US Army strongly associated with the good guys.
I don't think this will influence my playing habits much, but it will give more critical context to what I am watching and playing.
@SMJ It balances out your anti PLAYSTATION rhetoric
@Kakun Wouldn't take much to make COD fail considering how the last one turned out
@Sammy_G Ehh thats black ops.. the MW part of cod hasnt yet flopped tbf..i mean not as bad as black ops. Plus have you gone on nintendo life.. alot of folks are intreasted, now that we get a call of duty on switch 2 (haha cant wait to see how this part will pan out 🤣). Tbh i dont even know why i am defending cod lol not even a fan of the franchise apart from morden warfare
@matekomlosi Black Ops 7 isn't really that bad except for the campaign, the endgame and zombies is especially good for me, the people that hate Cod probably never liked the series to begin with or they haven't played in the past decade or longer, that's obvious to me.
It looks good and the graphics upgrade is nice. I'll get it for the campaign.
@Kakun How does this year's COD being in a different series in the franchise make it less susceptible to failing?
