Update #3 []:
We’re deep into Tuesday now and still no comment from Sony on its reported DRM issues.
We now have confirmation that the 30 day expiry timer is affecting software purchased within the past few weeks on both the PS5 and PS4. But we still don’t know if it’s intentional or an error.
However, a slew of statements from customer support have started circulating on social media.
Some of these appear to imply that the 30 day check-in is intentional and was incorporated after the March 2026 update. Others are less conclusive.
As always, we’d recommend approaching statements from customer support like this with a degree of scepticism. While the information does appear clear cut, some of these so-called agents are chat bots; others simply aren’t equipped to field topics like this.

Once again, we’ll push for a statement from the platform holder and will update when we hear back.
Update #2 []:
There had been confusion about whether the PS5 was affected by Sony’s alleged new DRM, which requires you to connect to the Internet every 30 days in order to verify your game licenses.
That’s because, unlike the PS4, there’s no disclaimer in the Game Information which states when your software will expire.
But Spawn Wave has put together a brilliant video, confirming this issue also applies to the PS5.
In it, he tests four games: Saint Slayer (purchased digitally today), Vampire Crawlers (purchased digitally today), Crimson Desert (purchased digitally around a month ago), and Pragmata (purchased physically).
All four games boot normally when the console is connected to the Internet. They also boot just fine when taken offline.
But in order to confuse the console’s time verifier, he removes the CMOS battery from his PS5 Pro. In these conditions, Saint Slayer and Vampire Crawlers no longer load at all. Crimson Desert does boot (despite showing a lock symbol), while Pragmata works as usual.
The error message that displays is as follows: “Can’t use this content. Can’t connect to the server to verify your license. Wait a while, then try again.”
All four games operate as usual when he reconnects to the Internet.
There are multiple concerns here, with the most worrying being that Sony has implemented a new form of DRM. We’ve contacted the company and are still waiting for a response.
At best, this is a bug which will need to be fixed because if it remains like this there’s a very real worry about preservation. In the current scenario, if your CMOS battery were to fail and Sony had taken its servers offline, your purchases would be rendered worthless.
It’s worth reiterating here that there’s no evidence whatsoever of your licenses being revoked if you fail the check-in; this is also only affecting newly purchased games.
However, there’s enough evidence mounting now to demand a comment from the company.
Update #1 []:
It’s early on Monday afternoon as we update this article, but we’re still waiting for comment from Sony on the PS5 and PS4’s alleged DRM issue.
We outlined all of the problems earlier in the weekend, and the story has barely moved since then. We have contacted Sony for comment and we’ve yet to receive word back.
But a new video from Modded Warfare does provide a pretty good summary of the problem.
As noted previously, this issue only appears to affect newly purchased PS4 software for now. There’s still uncertainty around whether PS5 is impacted as well.
As he shows in the video, newly purchased software requires a PSN handshake every 30 days in order to be verified. When he takes the CMOS battery out of his console, those games get locked and are no longer playable.
The timer does restart if you connect your console to the Internet, but this obviously raises huge preservation concerns should Sony ever take its servers offline in the future.
It’s still unclear whether this is an unintended bug or a new form of DRM, and we’re not going to know for certain until the platform holder comments.
We’ll continue to push the company for a statement and will update when we get word back.
Original Story: There’s been huge concern among PS5 and PS4 owners today regarding an alleged form of DRM introduced by Sony which appears to suggest owned software will expire within a period of 30 days.
However, it’s important to caution that the reporting thus far is inconsistent, there’s been no comment from the company itself, and there have even been some suggestions of the issue already being resolved.
Here’s what we know so far:
- Some newly purchased PS4 games have started to display a validity period of 30 days.
- Based on our testing, the issue only appears to be affecting PS4 games purchased within the last few weeks.
- We’ve been unable to replicate the disclaimer on a PS5, although some on social media claim they’ve seen the message there as well.
Some reporting suggests this timer resets if you connect to the Internet after it expires; we’ve been unable to confirm this for ourselves.
Other uncorroborated reporting claims your license will be entirely revoked if you don’t connect your console to the Internet before the expiration date; again, we’ve been unable to confirm this is the case. (Although it sounds like grounds for a lawsuit if true.)
The Issue First Emerged in Late March
Reporting on this started to circulate as far back as late March, although it’s only picked up significant social media attention today.
It’s worth pointing out that a very similar issue occurred with the PS3 and PS Vita back in 2022, which was resolved.
One X (or Twitter) account dedicated to game preservation, Destruction Games, claims that if the CMOS battery in your console dies or is removed, any games showing the validity window will no longer boot.
You may recall there was a big hullabaloo around this in 2021, which Sony actually fixed.
The CMOS battery effectively exists to retain date and time information, which allows the console to authenticate Trophy unlocks. Like any battery, it has a shelf life and will eventually stop working.
But while it’s an easy component to replace, an earlier version of the PS4 firmware required the console to connect to the PSN to verify the date and time upon being replaced.
Many were concerned that in the faraway future, if the PSN should ever be taken offline, this handshake would become impossible, rendering all software unplayable.
Sony actually patched this in v9.00, so it’s interesting to see a new issue rear its ugly head some five years later.
It Could Be a Bug
One thing worth reporting is that some users on Reddit claim the validity period was present on their games up until recently, and has since been removed.
Does It Play, meanwhile – an account dedicated to testing whether software will run offline – claims to have heard from an “anonymous insider” that the issue is “unintentional”.
The account writes: “From what we gathered, Sony accidentally broke something while fixing an exploit. They've known about the confusing UI for a while, but didn't see it as urgent.”
Wait for More Information from Sony
Our view on this is that it’s very likely an error.
While we certainly understand the cynicism and concern around this, the reporting is far too inconsistent for this to be working as intended. As we’ve outlined in this article, some are seeing the error and others aren’t. It also only appears to be occurring with newly purchased software specifically on the PS4.
We’ll be the first to criticise the platform holder if this does turn out to be a new type of DRM, but with no communication from the company and a lot of misinformation flooding social media, we’d urge everyone to stay calm until more details emerge.
In the meantime, we’ll contact Sony for comment and update if and when we hear back.

I’ll give Sony time to explain themselves, but if this is an attempt to force DRM into PlayStation……….let’s just say that my faith in Sony will be at an all time low.
Sony are really testing my patience this generation.
Isn't this the same with Xbox consoles, any digital purchases can be played without being connected to the Internet for 30 days, after 30 days you have to connect to the Internet to renew the license and then you can disconnect from the Internet and play again for another 30 days before needing to renew again.
If you're are always connected to the internet or connect a few times a week then this will never be an issue for you.
For those few that do go longer than 30 days without connecting to the internet you don't actually lose access to your games, you can go 100 days without playing your console you just renew everything when you finally do connect to the Internet.
I thought this was already a thing with Playstation as well or maybe that's just with Playstation Plus games.
Buy physical games. Digital games should be cheaper anyways considering manufacturing processes aren't involved. My $80 disc drive on the PS5 Pro (upgraded from base before price hike) has paid for itself in a month with games I've borrowed from my library. Companies aren't your friend, brand loyalty is outdated.
Please somebody tell me this is a joke.
@UltimateOtaku91 There is a problem with the Xbox Series X (brought to my attention by DoesItPlay, thank goodness) where you need to authenticate the console through a handshake with Microsoft's servers before you can use it. It's only once, and it's linked to the hardware rather than software, but it'll be a big problem 30 years from now in a way that booting an SNES or Sega Saturn isn't.
That instantly made me pivot from buying Xbox physical releases to PlayStation physical releases. To the best of my knowledge - backed up by DoesItPlay - the PS5 doesn't have any server handshake requirements for physical media (except in cases like Ubisoft games, which check a server before they can be played). As you said, you may also be thinking of PS Plus games; since that's a temporary subscription, they do a server check like the Nintendo Switch Online libraries to ensure you're still a paying member.
I'm not an expert in this, so naturally take my comments with a grain of salt!
Definitely seems like a glitch. This system would exist on the operating system for PS Plus games, something has happened where it's being applied to all software.
People acting like those who buy digital games don't have any means to access the internet. lol. Non issue, if it's not just a glitch to begin with. There's been zero proof that it's not been related to being a secondary console, doing game sharing, a PS+ title, etc. From what I've seen it's only on PS4 and the majority of comments elsewhere are calling bs on the accuracy of the claims being made.
You will own nothing and you will like it.
#BuyPhysical
This has to be a glitch. I can't see anyone at Sony actually implementing this on purpose.
It’s usually a bug, it’s happened several times before and people always kick off as if it’s deliberate even though the clues are there that it isnt.
People like Lance McDonald should know better before making assumption posts like that blaming draconian drm rather than asking the question of it being a glitch, especially given he quotes a post that in full points out it might be a bug due to previous evidence.
I’m assuming it’s a bug until we hear otherwise.
You think this is what Sony had planned for PS4 launch before they came out and said that they support used games?
I'm gonna chuck this as a bug.
As soon as I saw that it was Lance McDonald that started the latest Internet drama, I suspected that it was a whole load of nothing. The guy has been hating on PlayStation since the community blamed FromSoftware for Bluepoint not being able to remaster Bloodborne.
I had the same thing happen the other day. A game I ordered from VGP arrived and I opened the box, peeled off the cellophane, and when I pried open the jewel case there was this note saying my game was about to expire. The disc flung itself into the air and exploded into confetti. That’s what I get for foolishly buying physical media
This would literally drive me back to PC.
Let’s hope it’s not true.
Everything points to this being a bug but I'm sure a lot of people won't let that get in the way of a good old outrage.
What impressed me the most was seeing so many people truly believing that they would have their paid games literally removed from their accounts if they didn't appear online for more than 30 days.
Of course, if there really is any new DRM practice, it's going to be horrible and everyone has to go down on Sony for it. But it's much more likely that the system will require users to go online at least once every 30 days to renew licenses, not that the game will be removed from accounts or anything like that. One user said his licenses were renewed automatically every time he went online on PSN.
Modded Warfare (of the biggest YT channels when it comes to PlayStation exploits, hacking and piracy) claims this is a way for Sony to prevent new exploits.
@RawnDawn No I think the system was created to deactivate ps plus extra/Now as it was titles.
@Balaam_ I hate it when that happens. So annoying.
@nolifebr I don’t buy the exploit line, pretty much all the exploits are due to bugs in the firmware, usually through common code used in licensed/open source libraries. All PlayStations since ps3 have used freebsd which is effectively UNIX so it’s exposed to any outdated or compromised elements of that code until those components are updated.
@AdamNovice - McDonald has a huge beef with Sony since SIE sent a cease & desist on one of his Bloodborne mods (I don't remember correctly, but I think he was distributing modified versions of the game to be played on unlocked PS4s or something like that)
@Ainu20 Why let a good crisis go to waste?
@LowDefAl - He explains that there's a kernel exploit called userland, that some specific games have.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIPuXAd6KCA
This is why I don't buy games digitally on Sony's systems very often. I simply don't trust them to not screw it up with a glitch. It's happened too many times.
Discs are probably the solution, that's if they don't start implementing the same kind of DRM for it!
I just can't accept the idea of buying an items I can't own and touch!
@NB-DanTE Don’t give them any ideas! We already have some companies requiring Internet to install a disc.
Do I grab my pitchfork now or wait till an actually statement comes out?
@Oram77 you grab the pitch forks and I'll gather the tar and feathers. It's probably a bug and nothing to be worried about.
@Northern_munkey Oh I 100% agree with you, but it doesn't stop the drama queens (mostly on twitter) running with it and claiming it as fact 🙄
Sony took the worst idea from the Xbox one announcement and made it real. Not even Microsoft dared to do it. I'm not impressed
I bet it's a bug and ppl are already going ballistic c'mon we know Sony has dumb ideas but this one would be beyond dumb relax guys
@Rhaoulos It’s most likely a bug. This has happened in the past.
Please don't repost Lance Mcdonald. He is an attention seeing wannabe hacker who is rude and has an obsession with younger looking Asian girls, which borders on racism and pdf.
Another reason to buy physical media whenever possible, whether this is erroneous or not.
@DETfaninATL Physical>digital and I will die on that hill!
This is similar with PS3 digital games. If you press triangle on the game and check "Information", it shows the date you bought it with "Starts" then "Expires" and "Remaining Time". My Disgaea 1 and The Darkness II digital copy remaining time showed "Expired" and can't be play. Luckily the rest of my PS3 digital games showed "No Time Limit" in the remaining time.
But that one twitter said about CMOS battery died could be the reason. My PS3 CMOS battery has died and probably if i replaced it i could play Disgaea 1 and The Darkness II again? 🤔
Also, physical > digital. This is another reason why physical is king 🤝
I’ve switched back to buying physical for this reason.. but this sounds like an unintended bug. Let em work it out, stuff happens.
Completely understand the jumping to conclusions, however.
Nothing to worry about so stop freaking out it dam bug no one taking your dam games
Sony has fallen so low people find it hard to believe it's not intentional anymore
@UltimateOtaku91 that's only for game pass games, bought content works offline fine.
I know this because a friend was working as a doctor in the middle of nowhere with spotty satellite internet at best, which was not enough to connect to xbox live, and he was able to play his digital games offline.
He stayed there for like two years and rarely managed to get his xbox online.
Are there really players in 2026 who go 30+ days without connecting their console to the Internet? This is another big nothing.
Lol, all of you in this comment thread smugly talking about how you only buy physical seem to be willfully ignoring the fact that a considerable number of disks nowadays do not actually ship with the full game on it and/or will not work without an update.
You don't actually own anything either.
@LifeGirl It still a better option than digital copy.
Sony, why do you want to kill the brand?
@PercyChuggs Cope harder
@LifeGirl if you buy physical edition from ***** companies, them yes, you are right.
>Could be a bug
Brother, it is a bug no doubt, probably just an UI one too.
Removed - trolling/baiting
All games since the ps3 have had this, to a degree. Owned games would show a start date and no end date. Games that were acquired via a subscription would have the 30 day deadline on the games and they would expire when your subscription expires.
@LifeGirl nope wrong. We are all aware that the disc will only contain a code but we get a nice box with nice art work and the code for around £20 cheaper sometimes.
@PercyChuggs Yes. There are many people who take a break, have family issues arise, experience a health crisis, are deployed, or any number of other issues.
Ah the bug/CMOS and more. How much is it the case this time compared to when they solved it. For PS+ this makes sense. For the other hmm.
Then again online passes for PS3 with Sony, to other things. The CMOS issue wasn't solved with PS3 so I assume it didn't matter?
I've had my PS3 in offline mode for digital and it works fine anyway, got a dodgey Wifi chip so my network settings/PS3 controllers don't connect, so I know.
PS4 i haven't used in months and I haven't had any warnings and I have checked the days thing before and it's not that bad.
The trophy syncing sure but that's maybe about it.
How much of this is believeable, why people say it and so on eh.
We can wait for Sony to tell us what's what, if they solve it 'again'.
I'm aware of the Ubisoft checks and played Lost Crown/Fenix Rising/Beyond Good and Evil Remaster to skip Uplay and other sign ins from my PS4/Switch network connection (turn on after) when I play those (rarely).
@PercyChuggs Other then the subscriptions or demos with timers.
Or can we not factor in 2nd hand market consoles sitting there not used for however long.
Whatever new in box models never been used 'ever'.
Or people like me who hasn't cared to turn my Xbox One for a year, my PS4 for months now (no I am not using a PS5/Xbox Series, others around me are, I'm playing Switch 1 and retro, I've checked the PS app a few times though).
They still work fine even when I turn them on, do a firmware update or sync them, not hard. But I have a fair connection with them to my network (or turn off if need be).
@PercyChuggs Hey, you just described me!
I haven't plugged my PS5 Digital Edition (2020 model, what a bargain!) in since late 2024.
Further, our Internet cables got cut over a week ago I'm currently running on my phones 4G and that isn't fast enough for downloading or playing games online anyway. At least until BT come and fix it.
So yeah, let's say, hypothetically, this was real, and it was the worst case scenario of license revocation, then my library just got wiped.
As it stands, it's probably a glitch....that comes with its own UI anyway, but it's still food for thought that the capability is even there at all.
@Haruki_NLI I don't think you need to log in directly on your PS4 / PS5. I assume you just need to log into your account through the app or on PC (PS Store for example) and it will register.
That would make most sense to me.
Cases like this are the reason why I am sceptical of future console generations supporting physical media. Unfortunately every platform holder, including Sony, want the users to be "always online", to avoid issues with offline DRM.
Push Square used Rational Thinking. Comment Section avoided the attack.
Comment Section used Outrage.
@RockyOfficial Problem with that is a lot of more recent games are little more than a game key on a disc. Starfield for one, Crimson Desert another. Granted with the latter you get a pretty plush deluxe edition for the same price as Starfield but even so.
Capcom on the other hand have done us proud with both RE9 and Pragmata, both games would work fine from disc albeit maybe a few glitches here and there but nothing game breaking.
And Sony will keep whipping their customers until morale improves!!
For me it is alarming that there are many gamers who are ready to give them a pass for that. I've read "If you do not have internet to renew your licence you have bigger problems".
I mean we all know it is NOT about Internet outage ... it is about anti-consumer practices and total control over the individual's purchases.
That is why I am 100% against forced server permissions to access the software you bought.
Bunch of BS. I fired my ps4 after months and not sign in to PSN. Games from PS plus essentials show a validity of 200 days left; games from PS plus extra have expired; probably because they have only a month to validate. All my digital purchases have no validity period, I can play them offline. This is probably a bug of double licensing, purchased and claimed in ps plus extra.
The internet jumping to conclusions with no rational thought? Well colour me shocked.
@Zuljaras I think people who jump then make up things in their own heads are the worst your games are ok
@Zuljaras Dumb comment is dumb. You think Sony is just supposed to be okay with having say 10 friends all log into each others accounts, download each others entire digital library, disconnect from the internet, and just keep games they never purchased? Say each person has 100 digital games on their account. According to you and several others, Sony should just let all 10 people play the 900 games they didn't buy on their own account, for free, indefinitely, just by disconnecting from the internet. LOL! Get real.
@Slayer25c My games are ok yes, because I only buy physical on consoles with very few exceptions.
@Almost_Ghostly It works now right? Are you telling me this exploit was available up until now for ALL these years and Sony did nothing?
Removed - flaming/arguing
Is this yet another great example of SONY HAVING A TRULY ***** GAMING GENERATION.
Competition is healthy and it can keep companies honestish.
The lack of a true competitor for Sony has Sony making some horrid decisions.
@Propaperpusher I keep hearing this, yet Microsoft have had awful DRM on Series X since day one. Switch 2 is awash with Game Key Cards.
Why didn't competition keep them in check?
@Almost_Ghostly why do I have to repeat myself again and again. It is all about anti-consumer practices. I do not need to be affected to be against something.
And your type of communication is really childish "lololo gtfo" ... really?
You're unable to replicate it on the PS5 because it's not happening on the PS5.
@Zuljaras Why do I have to repeat myself again and again. There is not even anything going on that's anti-consumer. And "childish"... Says the guy rambling on about stupid conspiracy theories. 😂
@Almost_Ghostly the only bug here is that Sony made it visible. This was clearly something that was being developed. I mean you can see it in the UI in the article.
And you didn't use a single "lolololo" or "gtfo"! I am proud of you!
Removed - trolling/baiting
@Almost_Ghostly how mature... thanks!
Anyway, have a good gaming weekend
I never would have put Microsoft and Sony swapping customer service places on my 2026 bingo card.
How do people get riled up so quickly without any real information? Do people not realize that waiting to know more is far less stressful than jumping to conclusions and being angry over something you don’t even know is definitive?
Even I would sue Sony if they done the revoking for not connecting online in 30 days.. literally have zero rights to do so
@Zuljaras Xbox bot or euro PC trash can?
@Sonofken I am sorry but I am trying to understand that "Euro PC" thing.
1. I really loathe Xbox as they are what is wrong with console gaming since the Xbox One. Their last good product was the Xbox 360 and to be more accurate their last iteration of it that fixed the overheating problems.
2. Euro PC trash can? Care to explain? I have a semi gaming laptop but I mainly game on my PS5, Steam Deck and Switch with the occasional retro gaming.
@Haruki_NLI if I buy a loaf of bread and forget to eat it and it goes bad, that's my fault, not the baker's. Consumers are responsible for managing and taking care of the things they buy.
@PercyChuggs But in this case the consumers were buying bread that could never get bad, only the new bread is getting bad in 30 days.
Should the baker make a disclaimer when you buy his new bread that you have to manage it in order to stay fresh?
I spoke to Playstation today about this, nothing has been confirmed. and it seems more likely to be a bug they were trying to fix concerning DRM.
@UltimateOtaku91 they also wanted a system that let you play games with out the disc but you needed an online check in not sure if every time for the game or not. i thought it was interesting , people were so against it, but then they did b/c with the xb360 that requires you to download a file online meaning if you don't have the internet then you can't play 360 games.
We need better laws to protect all consumers.
Digital games, digital movie purchases, music streamers, tv streamers, they're all scams.
I find the arguments against this to be a bit weak.
I see absolutely nothing wrong with a firm wanting to protect themselves from having their products stolen or used outside of the license agreement with regards to how many users are able to use it. Let’s face it, this type of DRM exists because a lot of you would engage in fraud otherwise by using crafty workarounds to allow half your mates and friends and family to play the game.
Having to check in with the server once every 30 days seems extremely reasonable to me. I’d find it odd that people who seem to be able to post on these message boards multiple times a day, every single day, 365 days a year, are seemingly unable to connect their console online once a month.
I’m sure the same people are on social media every day, and certainly do not go more than 30 days without browsing their favourite adult sites.
Yes, of course if your console breaks you cannot logon in order to activate the license. So the whole issue around the battery seems like clutching at straws to me.
@Dogbreath Let’s face it, this type of DRM exists because a lot of you would engage in fraud otherwise by using crafty workarounds to allow half your mates and friends and family to play the game.
Loving the accusation that most against this are thieves. You must be a lovely individual./s
You'll forgive me if I don't trust a corporate entity to not want to screw over consumers by removing access to something that was legally purchased. My good faith is assuming this is a bug, but it certainly is a very real bug if so; I did a test purchase when the news first broke. Doesn't say anything on PS5, but when checking on PS4, definitely had the issue as reported.
@MS7000 as a proud Amiga owner back in the late 80s and early 90s, who saw a huge amount of harm done to the system as a result of rampant piracy, I absolutely 100% do believe that “a lot” of people here would pirate games or have friends and family simultaneously using the same license, given half a chance.
It’s not even a “belief"; it was a fact that when gamers could pirate, they did so in massive numbers. In the same way it is a fact that people abuse the Netflix family package and ruin it for everyone else.
That’s not to say “a majority“ as you falsely attributed to me saying, although I'd speculate that it was certainly a majority back in the Amiga days.
Let’s not beat around the bush; the reason why all these DRM systems exist is because people steal or misuse the products otherwise in significant numbers.
I don’t know what conspiracy theory people have for why else publishers and developers require online activation every 30 days or systems like denuvo to be installed.
For decades, gamers played silly games, and now they’ve won silly prizes. Actions have consequences, although as I have pointed out, aside from the contrived fantasy scenarios that people are inventing as a reason to oppose this, this system has absolutely zero impact on a legitimate legal customer.
The same cannot be said of something like denuvo, which seems to screw over the paying customers like me, and not the Pirates.
I’m very happy with the 30 day online check. It has absolutely zero impact on me or any other legitimate purchaser, and if it prevents a person playing the game who hasn’t rightfully contributed towards the development costs by paying for it, then that's mighty fine by me.
Fools buying digital 🤷♂️
Sony are so bad at communicating with their customers. It feels like when they were humbled back around the PS4 launch, they were a bit better about it. Now, they just can’t be bothered.
I noticed on the weekend, my PS3 wanted me to set the date and time with the internet before I could play a
Daytona USA, so I wonder if PS3 too.
@MasterChiefWiggum there is nothing to be worried about your games are fine and everyone making it big deal need to go outside touch some grass
This must be a bug or mistake otherwise this is going to be huge!
They can't seriously want to do this to people??
This would be devastating for playstation if it's intended?
@Dogbreath "I’m very happy with the 30 day online check. It has absolutely zero impact on me or any other legitimate purchaser, and if it prevents a person playing the game who hasn’t rightfully contributed towards the development costs by paying for it, then that's mighty fine by me."
The problem is that in the future your game library may become unplayable. Let's say that Sony's verification servers close (or they migrate their servers to different address), then you would not be able to play your legally purchased games, even if they're downloaded to your system.
Similarly, if your CMOS battery dies, that would cause the same issue although that would be fixable if the servers are still up.
@Skinny-Pete What? Why would it be devastating? If a person is buying digital games they obviously have internet service in order to buy and download games. Thus they would also have internet access to verify every 30 days. If this is real, it's a complete non-issue. Absolutely nothing devastating about it.
@Almost_Ghostly It's not a problem right now, but it may be a problem in ten years or so. You can't guarantee that Sony will keep their verification servers up to date for multiple past generations of consoles.
Edit: Oh, and I suppose it could be inconvenient if you have limited access to internet connection.
"We have contacted Sony for comment and we’ve yet to receive word back."
Maybe they've heard how the article author finds updates "tiring"... 😂
Hello everyone.
Anyone knows the date since when if you bought the game it is affected?
@Almost_Ghostly It is if you want to play offline especially if the games were playable offline before hand.
There's literally no reason for them to implement this in my opinion.
Why do it?
Maybe devastating is a bit strong of a word but it's definitely an big issue and a negative no doubt about that!
Just making ps4 games not playable offline is a bad move!
Sony always remains silent until the issue is eventually quietly patched and I hear about it either here or on Mystic's channel.
@KoopaTheGamer Oh, come on. You can still buy games and download previously purchased games on a PS3.
While xbox been taking small dubs recently due to the new leadership, Sony is stepping in to collect the L's.
@Skinny-Pete If this isn't just a bug or something, you could still play your games offline. You'd just need to connect briefly then you could go back offline. Don't try to say "But what if I don't have internet access?" It's 2026, if a person has absolutely zero way to access the internet they have bigger problems. A person could even hotspot to their phone for all of maybe 30 seconds to verify.
@Bamila That implies Xbox doesn't require any verification after a certain time frame. News flash, they do.
Found a local place to replace my PS3 Slim's CMOS battery for about £40 as it's asking for date & time every time it starts up now.
@KoopaTheGamer That "But what if I don't have internet access?" line I keep seeing people use is silly. It's 2026, if a person has absolutely zero means whatsoever to access the internet they have bigger problems. A person could even hotspot to their phone for all of maybe 30 seconds to verify. People that buy and download digital games aren't leaving their consoles disconnected for 30+ days and they aren't concerned about not having internet access. This entire thing, if not a bug, is so grossly overblown.
@sanderson72 That's such an incredibly easy thing to do on your own. Could have saved yourself a bit of moola. Only thing needed is two different screwdrivers. No soldering or anything like that at all.
@Almost_Ghostly It's not ideal and it's unnecessary a user shouldn't need to sign in online to access a game that's downloaded onto the console Xbox doesn't make you do it on Xbox one and as far as I know you don't need to do it on the original switch.
Bad decision and unessesary it brings not positives just negatives you should be able to play digital games downloaded on your console offline.
I get it's not the end of the world but there isn't really any defense for making this happen.
Didn't this help kill the original version of the XBoxOne?
Thanks for the update. Though I still can't get over the word "expiry". 😂
For all the people defending this, for some odd reason, it is a bit more of the principal of the thing.
When you go to a car dealership to buy or lease a car you have different prices and different rules for each. If you buy it you leave, it's yours, do with it what you will. If you lease it for much less money you have to follow the rules and check back in when the lease is up.
The games industry pretends, PRETENDS, it is selling us a game by letting us BUY or PURCHASE a digital game, but then makes us jump through hoops like it's a lease. Then they point to the very small teeny tiny print about how we never actually bought or purchased anything, it's all just us paying full price for a game we don't own.
So there's the real actual problem, not the expiry and checking in, it's the companies charging us full price to "purchase" a game when they know we don't own anything, we have to keep playing by their rules.
So all digital storefronts should tell the truth, LEASE this game for $69.99, and then we all know what we're getting into.
I think the full time lie of the full price purchase of games on Stadia killed it more than the tech. The tech functioned, but it's a big bad bold faced lie to say we are buying or purchasing anything in the cloud. That should be illegal, full stop. Full priced cloud games is a hill I will die on. This is just their attempt to spread the cloud "ownership" lie to all digital "sales" when anyone can tell it's just a lease at a purchase price.
And I thought Sony and PS said PSN is no more, then why is it still in every article? 🤷♂️
@Almost_Ghostly It's a somewhat unlikely scenario but some people do go to their cabins in the middle of nowhere with no connection or bad connection. I wouldn't personally carry a console there, but I know people who do. Not to mention, sometimes Sony has network issues so this change could at the very least inconvenience people.
Besides, it's about principle. If I purchase a game, I want to be certain that I have access to it in the future. I don't like the fact that if Sony decides to change the rules, suddenly that certainty is gone.
@Skinny-Pete You CAN play them offline. You just need to "check-in". There's also zero proof thus far that this is even actually a thing. The images shared were PS+ titles and VERY few people are even reporting this as actually happening to them. There's also no evidence whatsoever that the consoles weren't game sharing and set to secondary console.
@KoopaTheGamer still waiting for the games I bought on Steam in 2003 to stop working.
Crazy to think that I bought those games before many of you were born, and people at the time were using the exact same arguments against!
Many of them are now Grandfathers and it still ain't happened!
Not that I care to even play any of those games. I don’t have enough spare time to play the games that are coming out now, without going back and playing games I purchased 10, 20 or 30 years ago.
It's like worrying an asteroid will wipe out the human race. Yeah technically it might, but I wouldn't worry about it....
@KoopaTheGamer It is incredibly unlikely. People just don't go to a remote location with at least no cell service for over 30 days with zero way to even contact anyone in case of emergency. And if they are doing that, the likelyhood that they're even remotely interested in playing their video games is slim to absolute zero. About not having access to games in the future, that's also incredibly unlikely. You can still download and play purchased games on a 360, XB1, PS3, PS4, 3DS, Wii, Wii U, etc.
@Almost_Ghostly We do know this is happening right now though my friend and everyone is still unsure if after that 30 days without a sign in you won't lose access totally to the game.
Hopefully it is a bug because it's bad practice and all the speculation is because Sony haven't given anyone a definite answer on this so what are people to believe?
If all this turns out to be legitimately happening there's no defence for it in that case unless you're a Sony employee and have to tow to line?
@Dogbreath This isn't about digital games themselves, it's about (online) DRM. And DRM has made some Steam games unplayable (I recall Assassin's Creed 2 having this issue, unless it has been solved). You may have a game in your library, you may be able to download it, but it may not actually let you play it.
better get internet set up in my coffin
@Skinny-Pete You and all of your friends have internet access. You have to or you wouldn't be here, and you wouldn't have purchased and downloaded digital games. You keep going on for no reason whatsoever. None of you are disconnecting for 30+ days either and none of you are losing all possible means to access the internet at least once every 30 days. Non issue. Just stop it already.
@Almost_Ghostly Difference of opinion obviously this doesn't effect or bother you or you don't see an issue with it and that's great others will feel differently it's nothing about access to the internet it's about them putting obstacles in the way of people accessing content they purchased.
I thought we were just having a conversation about it didn't realise I was going on and on about it and in fairness you have a lot more comments on this feed talking about this than me so you can't really talk.
Have a good day my friend ✌️
@Skinny-Pete We were just having a conversation. By going on about nothing, I mean that there's really no reason to even complain about it. Are you losing your internet service or plan on going to a secluded place with no internet or cellular access for 30+ days? There's no obstacle. You've had your console connected for a long time already, correct? Daily, correct? And no odd travel plans, correct? Non issue is all I'm saying.
@Almost_Ghostly That's the great thing about opinions everyone has one and sometimes they are different and the best part is nobody is wrong because it's an opinion on a subject!
Tolerance of others opinions is also a great trait to have.
I'm glad this is a non issue for you and you defend that stance so well good for you.
Still thinking it’s a bug until we hear otherwise. It has happened in the past. They’ll probably fix it without saying a word.
@Skinny-Pete Good that you are also defending your stance, even though it's not going to effect you at all.
@ShadowRJ For nearly the entirety of the PS5 generation my confidence in Sony has remained at an ATL.
@Dogbreath That’s not to say “a majority“ as you falsely attributed to me saying, although I'd speculate that it was certainly a majority back in the Amiga days.
I said most people against DRM. I never said that people against DRM are the majority. I have sadly gotten used to being in the minority when it comes to issues such as this.
I’m very happy with the 30 day online check. It has absolutely zero impact on me or any other legitimate purchaser, and if it prevents a person playing the game who hasn’t rightfully contributed towards the development costs by paying for it, then that's mighty fine by me.
Very happy for you. Not sure why you are so concerned about pirates, especially given that I doubt something like this will stop them if they are determined. But as a fellow "legitimate purchaser", I don't see why I should accept a lesser experience because of a handful of individuals who were never gonna pay in the first place. Will I be online at least once every 30 days? Majority of the time, I will say yes. Have their been periods of time where I have gone without internet for longer than 30 days? Also yes. Just because the fail conditions are very unlikely for a legitimate user, doesn't mean it won't happen. Sure, I can suck it up, but you know what? No.
I noticed how DEEPLY consumers are worried about the finances of multibillion companies.
They clearly need ALL those DRM checks to even stay in business, poor little things!
UPDATE: Out of completely irrational fear I took out my disconnected PS4 Pro that was not turned on in more than 3 years and played some of my physical games ... how silly
OK Sony I get it I will swiftly move to P.C. thanks for nothing.
@MS7000 Did you also go without cell service for 30 days at the same time as no internet? Because you could use your phone as a hotspot to check in. Absolutely zero friends, family, or neighbors with internet? No wifi access anywhere in your location? And "lesser experience"? LOL! What??? I'll repeat as often as necessary. Non issue.
@Number09 K. Sony says bye but I bet it's not happening because you most likely have a large library on PlayStation that you won't just abandon. You'll also stick around for those exclusives.
Exclusives lol I enjoyed that Sir @Almost_Ghostly
@Almost_Ghostly Laugh all you want. I am tired of fighting individuals with your mindset of minimising everything. Take your superiority trophy.
@Almost_Ghostly I stand for the people for the every man/woman this is a bad move if it's true very simple in my mind.
And while I defend my stance I totally respect your opposing view.
I hope it's a bug or mistake thats all I can say my spirit friend ✌️
Removed - unconstructive
Xbox had a fatal wound out of this, yet I’m already reading many trying to defend Sony here, seriously what will it take for y’all to realize you don’t owe blind loyalty to any brand?
Haven’t watched this week’s Sacred Symbols yet but I imagine Colin&co. will go over this topic, particularly since Saint Slayer seems to be affected. If not this week, then next. I still can’t imagine Sony would deliberately do this. This has to be a bug. It would be like shooting themselves in the foot with a howitzer if this was intentional.
In all honesty it would be easy for Sony to issue a statement about this, but their communication is pretty terrible with regards to problems. But hopefully this is just an error and not a policy change on how they tackle DRM.
I feel a little vindicated knowing my console-only friend is gonna finally learn the horrors of DRM, hehe.
Jesus Christ it’s a bug you can tell by the way its behaving so can we quit milking this
@IOI I'm personally not defending any company but until there's a official statement from Sony, I will have to put this down as some sort of bug, call me ignorant if that makes you feel better.
@Zuljaras Unrelated to the subject of the article at hand, but I had a... sneaking suspicion you weren't the biggest fan of Xbox. I love seeing the posts you make each week showing what games that you're playing, but I noticed that there was almost always a particular green console brand missing from your physical games lineup. That's fine ofc, not everyone can or should be a fan of everything.
Apparently, Sony has just confirmed that his indeed is official policy going forward.
@dark_knightmare2 Some people contacted PlayStation support and it seems to be done intentionally.
https://x.com/Pirat_Nation/status/2048884644305649921
@Dogbreath I’m getting pro big-boot vibes from your comments. You say DRM is a good thing because it creates an obstacle for pirates, but then also lament how it still applies to paying customers like yourself. But you’re happy with the trade off because it stalls (not even prevents) people you don’t personally know from playing it. You’re willing to put up with a worse experience if it means law breakers (who again don’t affect you in any way) don’t get to experience anything.
This is how companies get away with privacy-pushing policies, and people like you are all too happy to give it up simply because “I’m a law-abiding citizen who has nothing to hide”. If you’re as old as you claim you are, you think you’d know better.
This just sucks. I guess the best from prservation point of view are PC games now where you can have multiple copies on multiple hard drives or do some hacking to bypass rdm on games that have it... What a mess...
Thankfully, I only got physical games on PS4/5 within the last couple of months, excluding PS1 classics which are a bit irrlevant since I could also emulate my original copies on PC or PS3.
@anoyonmus @AllieKitsune Believing a tweet from Pirat_Nation is certainly a choice...
@Oram77 Well I have seen the same picture/screenshot from different users so its not just him.
If I could post pictures here and show it to you, I would.
I couldn't care less
I thought the primary console didn’t require an online check in. Has that changed? I remember the PS3 letting you share games across 5 consoles until Sony reduced it to 2, but I haven’t heard anything about requiring check-ins for your primary PS4/5 consoles. Curious as to what’s going on with this.
CMOS is holding date/time even if your console/PC is out of power. If it's not working, or the date is completly wrong, most network services are unavailable, as they rely on HTTPS, TLS etc.
A digital purchase with any form of DRM needs to be validated somehow. Only one service exists that allows to be completely offline and have a copy of your purchase, GOG on PC. Nothing new here. The problem would be if the revoke your license, which seems not to be the case.
I find the dismissiveness towards this from a lot of the PlayStation faithful to be pretty disheartening personally as the issue isn't necessarily there being a timer on playing games (since realistically the average PS5 gamer will almost always be playing on Wi-Fi to where this won't crop up) but rather that Sony is literally removing the option for people to play offline for extended periods of time without a login (most likely in an attempt to artificially boost monthly active user stats for investors) and doing so in a way which massively threatens efforts to preserve and archive games released on PS4/5 for future generations to come.
and to think this is the same company which made an entire ad directly calling out Xbox for this exact kind of DRM back at the start of the Xbox One, how times have changed 🙃
@Fizza I actually do remember that ad lol, and I remember the backlash Microsoft got when they announced it for the Xbox One.
@Fizza XBOX was trying to force this on every purchase though, not just digital.
Since they aren't revoking the license or anything like that, where's the problem? Because DRM that might not work in the far future is one risk you have when you buy digital.
Also, if people are crying about some 30-day handshake, boy imagine the lake their tears will make when they discover if you're playing a game on your secondary console that same handshake must happen every 15 minutes otherwise you get both kicked and locked out of your game until you connect again.
Least shocking news ever
Your licence to play games you purchased? Rediculous. It's bad enough that games on the desk are basically just the free beta version that needs Day One updates to play the finished version of the game, but now you can't even play games that are on your console that you purchased? Ridiculous.
If not for GTA I’d have traded in my PS5 at this point. Nonsense like this, bug or not, only pushes me further in that direction.
Having only just bought a Pro, and only just started to buy games on my PlayStation instead of my Xbox, and also having bought a number of older games digitally including from the PS4 era, I am a little confused by the terminology 'PSN handshake', @get2sammyb. Does that just entail connecting to the internet on my Pro once a month (although it is actually daily for me anyway), or do I need to start each individual game to extend the licence?
Thank you...
United States here, and after turning my ps5 on, I'm met with a new EULA. Playstation Terms of Service, Section 8.16 "Access to Purchased Items" it states, "You are solely responsible if you do not choose to download or access the product before it is removed or your license expires.." so maybe the 30 day handshake/license renewal thing isn't a mistake. Just something Sony pushed through before sending out the new terms of service.
"There had been confusion about whether the PS5 was affected by Sony’s alleged new DRM, which requires you to connect to the Internet every 30 days in order to verify your game licenses."
"Can’t use this content. Can’t connect to the server to verify your license. Wait a while, then try again.”
"In the current scenario, if your CMOS battery were to fail and Sony had taken its servers offline, your purchases would be rendered worthless."
"It’s worth reiterating here that there’s no evidence whatsoever of your licenses being revoked if you fail the check-in; this is also only affecting newly purchased games."
Here's some copying and pasting from update 2. Should be pretty clear what the real problem is here. All of our game purchases are actually just leases, we don't own squat unless you own it physical. And even if you do own it physical it's probably still just a license, but at least you own a coaster, and probably can even figure out a way to play it, unless they've secretly been putting call in DRM on the discs, but that's probably not a thing.
So as I said earlier, game companies should start being upfront about how we are paying them to use thier software, we aren't buying or purchasing anything, it's all just rentals.🤑
@rjejr
>unless they've secretly been putting call in DRM on the discs, but that's probably not a thing.
No, but since the 7th gen your disc drive does have a DRM, one time activation only and CMOS related, but still a DRM.
Decided to grab a cheap $6 game I was interested in on my ps4 and found it has 30 day countdown. The game was Emyliveshow which also has a ps5 version.
Get ‘em Sammy. Hold them accountable.
@rjejr
"unless they've secretly been putting call in DRM on the discs, but that's probably not a thing."
Wouldn't rule Sony out from trying anything - remember the rootkit they used to put on music CD's.
@Dogbreath people are going to get their knickers in a twist over you saying it, but I agree with you wholeheartedly. Most people, given the opportunity, would pirate software into oblivion.
It's why I never pay more than a rental fee's worth for a digital game. I don't reckon I'll even do that anymore. No disc no buy moving forward.
The earlier comments here have not aged well at all. The complete silence from Sony is rather staggering though.
Since buying digital games after the update will enforce DRM, I guess I won't be buying digital games anymore, and will just play my pre-update games. Good job Sony, I thought you liked money. I won't be buying many physical games anymore because of this either.
This sucks, I just recently bought Wild ARMS 4 and can confirm that I can see that 30 day countdown on my PS4.
Yeah, I have internet available for authentication but this should still NOT be a thing for digital games. There shouldn't be any limitations
Disheartening to see people say this is a non issue.
I have a PS3. I haven't turned it on in quite some time. I shouldn't lose access to games PURCHASED WITH MONEY just because I haven't turned the damn thing on in awhile.
This is complete and utter anti consumer *****.
Well sony you lost a fan since 95, I will never buy a digital game from you again. Keep chasing the live service slop games and wasting millions of dollars on them. You think your #1 in gaming far from it. Playstation hasn't been the same since the HQ left Japan for U.S.A. This is how you get treated for buying games absolute B.S.
What the **** is Sony thinking? At this point, I don’t think it’s a bug. This is wrong on so many levels. They’ve just committed commercial suicide—I imagine there’ll be a boycott, and I’ll be the first.
Also, I don’t think it’s sustainable in the long term. If digital sales drop a lot, I imagine many digital-only games will skip PlayStation altogether, which will push us even more toward the competition.
Even if it’s a mistake—which I think is more likely a backtrack—I won’t buy digital on PlayStation again, and I probably won’t buy much physical either.
GOG (PC games without DRM) just gained a user that easily.
I imagine these ***** raised the price before this to boost sales right beforehand.
Remember when xbone did the DRM? That effectively killed their system in the womb. Sonys been driving me away for sometime now. If they confirm this isn’t a glitch I won’t be purchasing any new games. Second hand physical only.
@MS7000 Wow. Settle down, Beavis.

https://imgur.com/2Ows8Dp
@PercyChuggs lol that’s an awful comparison.
@Questionable_Duck I have a 360 and a Xbox One X but I only play the 360 nowadays.
The One X is so disappointing, especially after some firmware update they screwed up the screenshot taking feature.
It was already the most uncomfortable of all other consoles requiring a combination of actions unlike the dedicated button approach BUT now it does not take every screenshot I try to take. If I use it 5 times I get 2-3 screenshots.
Microsoft just can't be trusted to make anything good anymore on the console market.
And I can't forgive the Internet required to setup the console ...
Steam Deck > Xbox One + Series X
If buying isn’t owning. Pirating isn’t theft.
@HRdepartment Quit whining. Look at the two images I linked to. Anyone that is buying digital games isn't even taking their console offline for 30+ days anyway.
This reminds me of when the Xbox One was announced (and to a lesser extent the PS4), and announced they wanted the system(s) to be always online, and how Navy service men and women came out and said "well I'm in a submarine most of the year, how does that help me?"
This is pretty much (or fully?) the same thing.
@rjejr I think most people don't realise this. When you buy a game be it physical or digital you only buy a license to access the game. You own squat. It also states somewhere in that convoluted mess of the EULA that access to the game you've just bought (rented indefinitely) can be revoked at anytime without notice. There is nothing new going on here but it's going to run and run until the next click accumulator arrives.
Another reason why an all digital future is depressing.
@Olskeezy That’s not what it’s doing. You are not permanently losing access to the game. It requires an online “check-in” every 30 days to renew your ability to play the game when the console is offline. Unless you don’t have any way to connect to the internet (even phone hotspot) for more than 30 days while wanting to play a particular game already downloaded to the console, it’s not going to negatively affect you. If your console hasn’t been turned on for years it doesn’t matter, your license will renew as soon as you can connect it to the internet. It’s not in the consumer’s benefit, but practically speaking, I doubt it would ever be a problem that any but an absolutely minuscule number of people would run into in real world use.
That said, I would like to know why they are doing this. What it seems like you could get away before this change is signing into a friend’s PSN account, activating your console as the primary, downloading a bunch of single player games they own and then basically never going online with that console again, and then your friend reactivates his console as the primary and continues as normal. That’s basically what a 30 day check-in would stop…but how many people out there are actually doing something like that? Unless there’s some other loophole I’m not aware of, the benefit to Sony to require a 30 day check-in to keep playing games offline barely seems worth the development effort of implementing such a system.
when they turn off PSN we will loose all digital purchases.
zero preservation
@Dogbreath "still waiting for the games I bought on Steam in 2003 to stop working."
Well, try playing "Dirt 2" or any other "Games For Windows Live"-product, that wasn't updated on Steam these days. Alternatively, try running Disney's racing game "Pure". These won't even work off the physical retail disc, because their respective DRM-servers don't exist anymore and publishers DGAF.
@Zuljaras You do know that the Xbox Series controller has a dedicated button for taking screenshots, right? The Xbox Series controller also works on Xbox One X, so you shouldn't have to deal with so many problems when taking screenshots anymore.
@Questionable_Duck I did not know that. Thanks! But the screenshots not being recorded is my big issue.
Now I wonder how to get a Series controller just to test it.
Like it or not, we are in the age when gaming is moving to fully digital and always-connected affair. It will be Steam all over - or even Netflix, I don't doubt it. I totally understand that there are people who want to preserve their collection and be able to play their game 20 years on from now on their original hardware, but I dare say more players just want convinience here and now. That's how video and audio streaming won, and it's 100% going to happen to gaming. There might be something niche physical, like Blu-ray or vinil relases for movies and music, but mainstream will move to streaming, where in 20 years you'll just have new, more advanced games to stream in a subscription-like service and older games - through emulation.
Sony's silence so far - testing the water?
If they feel they can manage the backlash, DRM stays. If not, they can claim it was a glitch and remove it.
Ah so it's 2013 again, but this time Sony will be given a free pass. It may remain, or it may be revoked, but the masses will let it pass. Remember your stance all those years ago people, be consistent.
Just a periodic reminder of their power over your supposed game ownership, be it physical or digital.
A simple flick of an invisible switch to refresh your memory, that actually you don't own s...t!
@Sweetz This is exactly what I'm thinking. What are Sony really getting out of this? You outlined a potential case for it where you sign into a console, download a load of games, take it offline and never bring it online again but as you were saying this is an edge case. It's all very weird and I'm sure it's motivated by greed in some form.
@Zuljaras No problem! The recording thing is definitely a big issue though, if there's one thing I really dislike about Xbox compared to other platforms, it's that they don't let you record more than a minute of gameplay footage at a time. There are ways to record for longer periods of time, but they require USB drives or something like that.
On PlayStation 5, I believe you can just record an hour without any problems. Not sure about Switch 2, since I haven't gotten the console yet.
I dont think this is a big thing. All we have to do is connect ps5 once a month to internet and i think most people do that.
That guy Lance is the person who started this nonsense a huge Sony hater. He's bitter Sony sent him a legal request to stop mods for bloodBourne. Since then he makes up stuff to try to ruin their image. Xbox has a drm thing also including physical media. Not worrying about this as a Sony guy.
People defending this are insanely shortsighted. Doesn't matter how easy or not it is to connect to the internet, it's not really the point
Sony deserves all the flack and all the consequences if this actually is something they intend to implement.
More importantly though, the solution is not to buy physical games as those also have their own limitations. What we need is legislation that clarifies that digital purchases are owned by the purchaser and that the seller must not put any limitations on them, time linked or otherwise.
@ozkrmz what, PSN? Always has been.
Such a terrible decision to make hopefully they reverse it!
@UltimateOtaku91 it used to be a thing with ps now iirc.
I remember having terrible internet and just playing whatever I could downloaded on psnow but without being connected to the internet and I needed to go back online after a while.
@Questionable_Duck Switch 2 is 30 seconds. Yeah Xbox can record longer vids to an external drive, which is a shame, but still, it's possible. Switch 2 being so short I guess is to save on it's meagre storage space, I guess Xbox are trying to save space too.
I can't remember the last time I recorded a video on any of the three consoles tbh and if I had a YouTube channel I'd use an external recorder anyway. I wonder what the stats are on useage of this feature. 🤔
@MrHaggi
And what happens when you can't connect? Maybe your net is down? Maybe they turned the server off? All gone. So short sighted. 🤦🏻♂️
So it's literally the same process Xbox currently uses and one Playstation already uses for Playstation Plus games. Those with Internet (99.9% of gamers) will not even notice this as a problem.
@JetmanUK If your net is down for 30 days then that's a bigger problem for you to fix than not being able to play some games.
The fact is nearly all gamers have Internet these days, especially with new consoles and games as it's a necessity for game and console updates and some games need it for initial downloads otherwise they are unplayable.
Worst case scenario you can even connect your Playstation to your mobile phones hotspot, just for that renewal.
@JetmanUK Oh, stop with the whataboutism bs. I can still download and play digitally purchased games on my PS3, PS4, 360, Xbox One, 3DS, Wii, Wii U, etc. Don't try to tell me you'll be without ANY means whatsoever to access the internet for 10 seconds for over 30 days at a time. "But but but!!! But but but!! What if!!!!! But but but!!!!" Tired of seeing that nonsense.
Absolutely not a fan of this but I am going to wait to see if it is a bug or intentional before getting too dramatic about it. Even if it is intentional the chances are the backlash will make Sony reverse the decision.
@Skinny-Pete Will you just stop already with the fear mongering?
@Almost_Ghostly Best feature that I've ever seen added to any console!
This will definitely enhance the user experience and most certainly isn't a bad or negative thing in any way!
People asking for more rights for the consumer with digital games ownership are just crazy this is so much better for the consumer than just constant access without restrictions great decision!
How was that for you??
@UltimateOtaku91
I never mentioned a scenario where my net is down for 30 days.
I meant (and I think you know this) what if my net is down when I go to play? You know, when I haven't had my PS4 or PS5 plugged in as we have moved onto a newer console, but I get my old boxes out and want to play my library I paid for, or maybe I have gifted it to a relative, child, charity etc. If my/their net is down, or if Sonys server is down, or if it's switched off... No gameplay.
@Almost_Ghostly Of course you're tired, you are in Sony defense force mode.
Or perhaps it's this...
How did you feel about the Xbox DRM in 2013? Or are you too young and need to be educated, try Google to see what gamers thought then.
The fact that some content from some old platforms is available doesn't comfort those who lost content on other platforms, and it shouldn't wash with game preservation, people bought these games in good faith.
I think those japaneses execs simply don't know how to handle their success. Everytime Sony is at the top, they ruin everything. They're too dumb to be competitive. I'm hoping for Xbox to come back and make some real damage, but they're dumb too.
Steam Machine is my hope now.
@Skinny-Pete You keep blowing the entire thing way out of proportion. Over and over. That's what the problem is. It's a non-issue. Period. If you're buying and downloading digital games, your internet service is fine and will have zero issue verifying if necessary. You keep making a mountain out of a molehill and keep complaining about it over and over. What exactly is the issue here? Do you not have internet access? Seems your internet is working perfectly fine. This has already been a thing for over 10 years but you're not complaining about it until now? Enough already.
@JetmanUK Tell me which content you lost and which platform. The whataboutisms surrounding this effing REEKS. And too young to remember? I'm in my 50's, sit down little guy before you injure yourself or someone else.
@JetmanUK You are 100% right my friend I don't get how people can defend a multi billion dollar company putting restrictions on consumers accessing content they already payed for like a good thing or something not to dislike at least.
If a game is downloaded to the console it should be playable offline as long as the console is capable to play the game.
@Skinny-Pete How many times do I need to repeat myself? You can play your games offline. Stop making ***** up. Jesus Christ all ***** ready.
@Almost_Ghostly You are acting like I'm non stop on this feed like you are my dude I only have a handful comments here if you check.
The problem is you shouldn't have to sign in at all if the game is downloaded to the console it's an erosion of consumer rights of digital games purchased on playstation.
It's not about internet working or not we shouldn't have to sign in period even if I had a constant link to Elon musks starlink internet I'd still say the same!
@Almost_Ghostly
Sounds like we are a similar age, and I wil not be silenced with a sit down from a blind corporation defender, get yourself off their "thing" and open your eyes.
Why are you defending this? What positive effect does this have on you as a consumer? You wont have an answer for that.
What was your stance in 2013? Or did the colour of the box (green) mean that it was different?
Come on man, wake up!
@Almost_Ghostly quit being a ***** and get that corporate peen out of your mouth. 🤷♂️
no one knows what will happen with digital games you purchased if and when PSN is turned of.
I’m done buying any game for my PS5 until this is rectified. Digital or physical. On to steam; I guess.
@Almost_Ghostly ...
Herman, that you?
@Shrek_Realista The steam machine is less powerful than the base ps5 and series X I don't see that doing amazingly with those specs.
it's odd that valve has gotten a free pass for pulling this same stunt for a decade now? while steam offers an "offline" mode, it does require an internet connection after a certain amount of time to validate the game license. not sure if its 30 days or varies on the software...
sony has been so terrible the past 5 years, this 30 day verification bs really doesn't surprise me. for every good thing sony has done this gen, there are 5 bad things. they could shut down insomniac tomorrow and i wouldn't flinch — their decision making has been that bad.
i gave up on the idealist vision of what the gaming industry should be and totally expect anti-consumer initiatives to happen now. suffice to say, this 30 day internet DRM is wrong, but not something i can get overly invested in at this time. sony has already broken me down
