Koei Tecmo Sales

In an age where it can feel like the entire gaming industry is collapsing in on itself, it's always nice to report on some good news.

This time, it's Koei Tecmo's turn in the spotlight, as the Japanese publisher's just made some major revisions to its earnings forecast; it's now expecting record revenue and profit thanks to significantly improved sales in the most recent quarter.

Basically, the company's latest games have all performed better than expected. That's Nioh 3 (the fastest selling title in the series), Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake, and, of course, Pokémon Pokopia.

This has led to an impressive 16.1% increase in profit through sales; previously, Koei Tecmo had actually envisioned a decrease in year-on-year profit, but it's managed to completely flip the script.

It's worth stressing, however, that the company's also making some very effective decisions outside of its game business. Its ordinary profit has jumped an eye-watering 50% because of factors like investment returns.

Things are looking pretty positive for a number of Japanese publishers, then. Capcom's still on one hell of a winning streak, Konami's finding a shocking amount of success through its renewed focus on games, and Bandai Namco's been reporting really strong anime-based sales for a while.

It'll be interesting to see what Koei Tecmo's got lined up for the rest of the year and beyond. Outside of re-releasing Dead or Alive 6 on PS5 this summer, and having a brand new Dead or Alive title in development, its plans are a bit of a mystery.

Given how successful Dynasty Warriors: Origins ended up being, we wouldn't be all that surprised to see the reveal of a new Warriors game at some point soon — but then we're still waiting on Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered, which was hit with an indefinite delay earlier this year.
