A modder has ported the open source operating system Linux to his PS5 and immediately set it to work, running GTA 5 at 60fps with full ray tracing enabled.
The hack runs using an older version of the console’s firmware, so only the most dedicated will be able to try this at home.
But according to the modder, all of the format’s features are functional, including its 4K HDMI video output and all USB ports.
He notes that its CPU is currently running at 3.2GHz and its GPU is operating at 2.0GHz. While it’s possible to push both of these harder, it sounds like it could lead to overheating issues, so he’s currently not using those higher speeds.
It’s worth noting this is all running on a traditional base PS5, and not the more powerful PS5 Pro.

An interesting experiment, then. It’ll be fascinating to see where else modders take the console, now it’s starting to get cracked open a little more.

If I personally cared for GTA, FPS, or ray tracing, I’d probably be very impressed right now.
Does it run Crysis tho?
Gta5 is the game that refuses to die. I never in a million years would have predicted that it would still be selling so well all these years later. Crazy stuff! Can’t wait to sink a couple hundred hours into the next game.
This is why I'm interested in getting the Steam Machine when it releases cause it uses Steam OS which is a proprietary of Linux. Really good opportunity to play around with it in my eyes without having to mess around with anything on my PC.
I know my Steam Deck has it too lol
GTA VI at 40 fps with upscaled 4K is all I hope.
@Deadlyblack
I missed the Steam Deck train but I will definetely buy 2nd one's OLED. Great thing to have I presume.
@Fluberuper Good job they didn't do this to impress you then, isn't it?
Well I'd hope the PS5 can handle a PS3 game...even with those little bells and whistles it's still a PS3 game under the hood.
@Scottyy I really enjoy it! It has a lot of versatility in what you can do with it, which is really nice.
Modding is cool and all but this would have been more interesting if he was playing a game that we didn’t already have. This is like jail breaking an iPhone just to make it run the safari browser 😆
Kind of hate that jailbreaking is taking off on PS5 to be honest. Probably won't be long before cheating is rampant.
@Balaam_ Just be grateful he didn't mod it just to play Doom.
@MrPeanutbutterz You seem a little too upset that I said I wasn’t interested in this, but hey, you do you.

@Slayer25c LOL, what the heck? My guy, its a video game console. Not the abuse of children or the elderly. Relax.
People are riding RT too much.. Besides, it never hit 60fps so why bother.
@Deadlyblack If you're adventurous you can install Steam OS on a separate SSD or second PC. Fun to mess around with.
@MidniteWanderer My thing is adding it to the games that never shipped with it. When added to a older title, say BF3 campaign for example, its really worth it. It doesn't take a lot, when its in sprinkled on top.
i'll stick to my ps3 that runs on tin cans..same story.
@11001100110zero lmao I was waiting for someone to comment 😂 I being silly
@Gaia093 If easy jailbreaking means Bloodborne with 60 fps, I can’t wait!
@Fluberuper No, I'm just calling an utterly pointless comment what it is, namely utterly pointless.
You add noting to the discussion with it.
@MrPeanutbutterz Just calling it how I see it. Don’t mean anything by it. Have a good day, friend.
@Fluberuper to be fair @MrPeanutbutterz does have a valid point. You have no interest in the game but you still read the article just so you could comment. Just calling it how I see it .
@Fluberuper useful comment, thanks for sharing!
@Drnsnsr I don’t post my personal opinions based on whether people find them useful or not. Because, in my estimation, your own comment is equally as useful.
@Northern_munkey I don’t think I ever said he didn’t have a point. I just said he seems strangely upset by my personal opinion.
@11001100110zero Yeah, I definitely thought of doing that.
Considering how expensive PC hardware is right now, this could be a useful Steam Machine alternative. Maybe
But the official Performance RT mode already outputs 1440p / 60Hz with Ray-Tracing? Perhaps that's only RT shadows, whereas this claims it is full RT.
Now that's chuffing sweet.
@Fluberuper Not even remotely "upset". It's just making noise for the sake of it - no one can really start a discussion around your original post. But I'll guess I'll try - you don't care for FPS? So a janky Saturn game at 15FPS is okay? And you don't care for ray tracing - you don't like improved visuals?
@Max_the_German Bloodborne at 60fps is fun on a modded ps5, so is Driveclub and RDR2 at 60fps. Just played through RDR2 at 60fps on ps5, beautiful.
@MrPeanutbutterz Well, for one, my original comment wasn’t meant to “start a discussion”. I don’t post my comments for the sake of interacting with others. If they want to respond, that’s fine, but my intention isn’t to get other people involved. (And if that was really the reason you responded to me, you should be going after tons of people in tons of other articles for similarly “useless” comments.)
Secondly, i obviously don’t like 15 FPS, but I sincerely don’t have any issue with 30 FPS. I can barely see any difference between 30 and 60 (I know there IS a difference but to my eyes I just don’t see it enough to mind) and I don’t even have a television that can run 120.
Thirdly, while I quite obviously enjoy improved visuals, they are not my main priority in any video game. Art style and gameplay are far more important for me personally. When Xenoblade first came out on the Wii I was one of the people who didn’t complain over its, admittedly subpar, visuals and did not feel it subtracted from my experience with the game in a meaningful way.
Probably worth noting, this is the same guy that hacked the PSP and Vita back in the day.
Holy moly that’s immensely sick, Linux fans gonna be eating tonight. Much approved. 👍
@Deadlyblack
Could not agree more. 😄
Big steam deck user personally and it’s just great.
@Fluberuper Considering GTA5 is a 13 year old PS3 game - meh.
Maybe the PS5 jailbreak will push Sony to launch the PS6 a bit quicker. The cat is out of the bag, and only new hardware will stop any software leaks. PS4 piracy was rampant once it took off.
I only run Linux on my old leftover PCS that won't run Windows 11 so I can't imagine needing to do it to my PS5 for at least another decade.
But if you paid $400 or $500 for a piece of hardware you should be allowed to run whatever you want on it - Linux, Mac, Windows, Android. It's your hardware, you own it. If they don't like it don't sell the hardware, rent it.
What does it look like when you turn it on and select the games?
But GTA 5 on PS5 already does 60fps with Ray Tracing!
Performance RT mode
@Boxmonkey My understanding is that one of the reasons GTA5 keeps selling so much is that in many territories the bundle with the game and "shark cards" (GTA Online in game currency) are cheaper than buying the shark card on it's own in other territories so the credits can be sold online on the grey market.
Make no mistake the game is still super popular and would have sold 100-150+ million anyway, but probably not 225+ million.
Very underwhelmed by this news... All that trouble to run a game that already runs at 60fps on sonys console... Replace gta5 with no rest for the wicked, now you have my attention otherwise, keep scrolling...
@Fluberuper
You cared enough to read the story and post a comment on it. Just saying
@The_Jobbo I never said I didn’t care about the article. I said I don’t care for GTA, 60 FPS, or ray tracing. I said I wasn’t impressed by the actual modding. Two different words with two different meanings.
