PS5 Pro PSSR 2.0

A freshly spotted Sony patent has shed a little more light on PSSR 2.0 — the update that's coming to PS5 Pro at some point this year.

Rumour has it that the software upgrade is launching very soon indeed, so the timing of this patent perhaps adds some weight to the whispers.

As is usually the case with tech-based patents, there's a lot of complex language backed up by diagrams that'll leave most people scratching their heads — but the documentation is clearly related to the PS5 Pro's AI-based upscaler.

Basically, PSSR 2.0 seems to be exactly what many are expecting: it's a more efficient reworking of the technology, allowing for higher frame rates and better resolutions when PSSR is enabled.

In its current form, PSSR essentially tries to enhance visual clarity without sacrificing performance. It often does this by dropping the game's native resolution, before cleaning the image up itself.

According to the patent, that process could be on the cusp of change, as 2.0 may be capable of smoothing out frame rates instead of resorting to straight resolution drops. In essence, the upgraded software will attempt to find a better balance.

In theory, this should help alleviate some of PSSR's most common problems, like the weird visual reconstructions that can occur when the upscaler doesn't quite understand what it's looking at, having already reduced the game's resolution.

We're going to assume that Sony will deliver some kind of deep dive on PSSR 2.0 in the near future, which will hopefully give us a much clearer understanding of what's on offer.

Until then, though, are you looking forward to this software upgrade? Show some patience in the comments section below.
