The cult classic action adventure game Okami turns 20 this year, and publisher Capcom has opened a dedicated website to mark the occasion.
Okami was originally released in Japan on 20th April, 2006, and while it didn't sell particularly well at the time, it's gone down in history as a classic of the era.
It stands out for various reasons, not least of which is a gorgeous painterly art style and a unique mechanic in which you paint objects and effects into the game with the Celestial Brush.
You play as Amaterasu, Japanese goddess of the sun, in wolf form as you set out on a quest to save Nippon from darkness and restore it to its former glory.
The new website shares a message with fans of the game, thanking them "for connecting with Okami" over the years and teasing some fun things for the game's 20th anniversary.
"We will be rolling out various commemorative projects, including 20th-anniversary goods and events," the site says.
At The Game Awards 2024, it was revealed that an Okami sequel is now in development at the newly opened studio, CLOVERS. Hideki Kamiya spearheads the project as the game director.
We probably won't see it come to fruition for a while yet, but hopefully we'll get a sneak peek at the sequel during this anniversary year for the series.

Would love a 60 fps patch for Okami HD!
The game is still a work of art to this day.
I need to finish this game. I think i left it after i beat Nine Tails and headed north.
good news, okami top 3 games in ps2 era.
I have the ps2 port on ps4 but would love an actual Remaster prior to the release of the sequel 🤞
If only they had bought it to the Vita. It would have been wonderful with the touchscreen.
It forever amazes me how a game that's still as beautiful as ever was made during the PS2 era.
Played this game on PS2 and PS3, where I got the plat. One of my fondest gaming memories. This game is really a masterpiece, 10/10. I wish they released Okamiden on playstation as well, before the new sequel.
This is not a game,this is an art. I never played something like this. Love and adored Okami. So excited for the sequel.
Yes yes yes, please. My one game when going on a deserted island (with all implications of getting a PS2 to even be playable, of course)! I'm expecting greatness of the sequel and it's thrilling to think about what Ammy and **** can expect "up there"! (Spoilers avoided)
Listen to the soundtrack, yall!
@Czar_Khastik, my balkan brethren, gimme your take! heartshapedhands
@PerpetualBoredom
Shinshuu Plains I & II are works of musical art.
I think I had it on three platforms, maybe more. Also I'm one of fifty people who played Okamiden.
@MrPeanutbutterz (#11) where to begin, where to end! 😭❤️
From their great remasters/remakes to some of their newer releases, capcom is one of the great developers, as of late. Especially when it comes to the rate they release their games. REreq and pragmata both releasing soon, its crazy. Meanwhile es6 and gtavi are taking forever.
Would love a remaster for PS5 at this stage.
Love, love Okami - easily one of my favorite games ever. I am thrilled it is getting a sequel and would love to conjure up the time to celebrate the 20th anniversary with a replay of the PS4 remaster.
Fair but where is Okami Den? Where is PN03 on Switch 2 GameCube NSO? Where is Under the Skin for PS2 emulation or a live service version? Come on Capcom, your really not pushing IPs that have a lot of worth of ideas at all.
Good on Okami but even still, 2 games and a sequel years later sure, but plenty of other IPs deserve support or revival too.
Where is Viewitful Joe on PS2 emulation as well? Where is its anniversary?
One of the best games I've played by the end, but boy does it start slowly and is tough to love initially. Especially the original version when you couldn't speed up or skip text, that was a chore.
@PerpetualBoredom I don't like to admit this, but I didn't play the game and I've been telling myself to do it for the past 20 years. To be fair, I purchased a physical edition of Okami HD for the PS4 and it's on the upper part of my backlog so I'll definitely get into it soon enough.
Even though I didn't play it yet, you can smell from a mile away that this is a cult classic and I'm really glad it's getting a sequel it deserves. I'm guessing you're a big fan?
@Czar_Khastik Definitely am! I share these memories with my younger sister, she still occasionally plays it on Switch. I love everything about it (except you, in-fight-camera. You suck!). The best Zelda-like on Playstation, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy second.
@Nei (#16) same! ❤️
