New Website Celebrates Okami's 20th Anniversary as Work Continues on Sequel 1

The cult classic action adventure game Okami turns 20 this year, and publisher Capcom has opened a dedicated website to mark the occasion.

Okami was originally released in Japan on 20th April, 2006, and while it didn't sell particularly well at the time, it's gone down in history as a classic of the era.

It stands out for various reasons, not least of which is a gorgeous painterly art style and a unique mechanic in which you paint objects and effects into the game with the Celestial Brush.

You play as Amaterasu, Japanese goddess of the sun, in wolf form as you set out on a quest to save Nippon from darkness and restore it to its former glory.

The new website shares a message with fans of the game, thanking them "for connecting with Okami" over the years and teasing some fun things for the game's 20th anniversary.

"We will be rolling out various commemorative projects, including 20th-anniversary goods and events," the site says.

At The Game Awards 2024, it was revealed that an Okami sequel is now in development at the newly opened studio, CLOVERS. Hideki Kamiya spearheads the project as the game director.

We probably won't see it come to fruition for a while yet, but hopefully we'll get a sneak peek at the sequel during this anniversary year for the series.
