Hytale PS5

You may have noticed a bit of a storm gathering around a game called Hytale over the last week or so.

Currently available on PC, the title's racking up some ridiculous player numbers — we're talking a reported 3 million concurrent users at one point — but is it coming to PS5?

Well, apparently, that's the plan — but it sounds like it's going to be quite some time until we see Hytale make the jump.

That's because developer Hypixel Studios is still working hard to update and improve the base game; it's essentially in early access right now.

The company's official FAQ reads: "We are planning for a console release at a later stage, but this requires a lot of work on backend systems to make this a reality, so it's not something we want to invest resources into right now. For now, we would like to focus on making a good game first."

The story behind Hytale is rather interesting. It actually started life as a take on Minecraft — a multiplayer server known as Hypixel. The people behind said server then wanted to create their own Minecraft-like title, and so both the newly established studio and the IP were acquired by Riot Games in 2020.

But development proved troublesome. Multiple delays later and Hytale was officially cancelled in June of last year.

However, Simon Collins-Laflamme, the project's original co-founder, managed to buy the IP back from Riot Games, re-hiring a number of developers in the process. And we're obviously now at a point where Hytale is the real deal.

In essence, Hytale is a more RPG-ified version of Mojang's eternally popular sandbox title. It's fairly easy to see why it's absolutely exploded onto the scene.
