Carmageddon: Rogue Shift was quite the surprise when it was announced back in December, and it seems to be shaping up pretty nicely.
A new trailer combines gameplay with some cinematic shots, and it looks like a seriously fun time:
It comes from 34BigThings, the development team behind the Redout series, so there's some racing pedigree there, which is a good sign.
But it's the interesting spin on the series that has us most interested. This is a roguelite racer, meaning it's a run-based fight for survival through procedurally-generated routes.

Each time you conclude a run, you'll be able to unlock permanent upgrades that give you better odds in each subsequent attempt.
On top of that, each run allows you to build some crazy vehicles with unique weapon classes and perks, so you can fashion some really fun-sounding synergies.
On the PS Blog, 34BigThings mentions builds where causing explosions can repair your car, or boosting the power of rocket launchers by multiplying how many missiles they fire per shot.
It sounds like it should be lots of fun to toy with, and judging by the trailer and the studio's previous work on racers, the driving itself will seemingly be solid too.
We're looking forward to checking this one out, and it's not far off; it launches 6th February on PS5. What are your thoughts on Carmageddon: Rogue Shift? Tell us in the comments section below.

Rogue vogue can't end soon enough.
Yeah! I wanna run over zombies!
No wonder it looked interesting it had personality. Most racing games don't these days and put me off how bland they are (lacking creativity, being bland, being esports, being just generic use cases for cars more and more, weak events and so on) and while this series is very combat focused or fair settings I'm interested to see what they go for. I doubt we will get other vehicular combat games in such high budget and it stays with Indies (even if veteran staff Indie studios).
I'm not the biggest on Redout but I respect them when I've played them. I hope whatever angle they have for this will be interesting for the kind of IP Carmageddon is.
I mean the reason I care for Virtua Tennis more is due to the silly minigames, as they break up the general tennis play.
If they offer enough uses for zombies with modes I'll be happy. I mean if GTI Club on PSP/PS3/Wii can have a hot tomato, 2 car soccer modes and more generic time trial, Juiced 2 can it's angle of modes and more. It shows with good use of objects or entities or other things a lot of modes can happen its just no one wants to make them and just go oh controls/environments that look good but function generically empty and lack a lot and cut corners is enough. No it isn't. I notice and hate how bland and empty games are.
Worlds have never been more bland these days.
If it has enough modes/event variety then good (the team doesn't have to go crazy just offer a few things), if it doesn't no sell sorry. I'm sick and tired of the lack of event variety and rules for whatever they can these days. It's always the boring phyiscs and graphics focus, I'd rather play Juiced 2 (3 to 4 drift modes, I don't expect that but at least if the game can define enough combat modes or whatever they want to go for, for this Carmageddon) or WRC3 or PGR series or others with more event variety. I was fine with enough cones, gates, whatever RULES they can define. Or challenges with enough RULES defined. Not just look we have racing/elimination or drift or time trial or just 1-2 modes. Come up with something interesting for combat, race or whatever necessary modes.
Make it not just a kart racer even to lean into just make it have enough personality in areas for modes, what weapons do or vehicles do, or how zombies are used or whatever creatures and uses for them.
Vehicular combat games vary of course but even still. Enough combat modes or challenges maybe mixed in besides the main things sure. Just a bit to get interested not being too straightforward and boring as it can wear off and become boring. Just enough variety, not going crazy just a little bit of things to do.
Also using challenges in main events no, none of that. Dirt 5 was boring for that and cutting back what Dirt 3 did well.
Gas Guzzlers was fair, Redout is ok, Grip is ok.
But Onrush to me was good at balancing its event variety despite it's structure.
Inertial Drift did in its way as well.
I'm in. The rogue like thing concerns me a little, but I trust the devs. The world needs more dumb car combat games.
Keeping an eye on this, need a good thumping arcade racer now I’ve burned out on Wreckreation.
Not really feeling the rogue like thing, and the tracks looked more like traditional linear courses. For me the best part of Carmageddon was always just driving around the ridiculous environments wrecking other cars and mowing down as many people (and cows) as possible. I mean I'll give it a chance but this is not sounding like what I'd ask for in a Carmageddon reboot.

This sounds like a very interesting idea. Remains to be seen whether its executed well but the idea of a roguelite racer is appealing.
Also feels like a prime ps+ day 1 title
I just call it "Rogue Shift" because that's not Carmageddon, still looks like a decent game. Hope it's not a broken cobbled together mess when it launches and they take their time to polish it.
This might a decent game on its own merits, but as a Carmageddon game, I absolutely hate the look of it. It's simply not Carmageddon, not even remotely close.
@HRdepartment Off topic. You should really go outside more.
"This is a roguelite racer, meaning it's a run-based fight for survival through procedurally-generated routes"
Nah, I'll pass. I like my games to have an ending and levels/tracks to be hand crafted
Procedurally generated usually means soulless. If it hits Plus or is on sale for super cheap I'll try. But their previous games were extremely difficult with beyond finicky controls, so they don't have a good track record for making things actually fun.
It's not Carmageddon, but if they raise brightness so the graphics won't look half gloss - half pure black it may be interresting. ...and humans instead of zombies, of course....
As long as it scratches my Burnout itch, I’m in.
