An entire BioWare game will disappear today, as the time has arrived for the developer to switch off the online servers for ANTHEM, its PS4 flop of 2019.
As an online-only experience, the title will no longer be playable in any form on any console or PC once access has been revoked. An exact time for the server shutdown hasn't been communicated beyond today's date, but it is still playable at the time of writing, with fans live streaming their goodbyes on Twitch.
By the end of today, though, ANTHEM will no longer be playable.
Other hardcore fans have been returning to the game in order to secure its Platinum Trophy. Some fans on Reddit have documented the unlock:
Released for PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2019, the online title marked a move away from traditional RPG development for BioWare, as it made a loot-based shooter in ANTHEM. The effort never truly took off and launched to very disappointing reviews and feedback from the player audience.
We awarded it a 5/10 on release, and the overall Metacritic rating for the PS4 version sits at 54. This is the lowest score for any full release in BioWare's history.
We concluded: "Given time, ANTHEM could slowly start to bloom into a much more cohesive experience, but the worry is that it won't be given a chance. There's a good game in here somewhere, but only the flashy, satisfying combat stands out amongst a background mess of shockingly bad design decisions and woefully undercooked systems."
