The Alters, a PS5 sci-fi survival title released earlier this year to widespread praise, is receiving its biggest update so far today that adds new features, customisation options, and modes to the experience. See it all in action in the new trailer.

Once downloaded, with the patch going live today, you can install a new module called the Gamer's Den that features its own custom card game. You'll be able to play it yourself "because even a stranded workforce of Jans needs somewhere to unwind".

Alongside it is a new noir-styled storyline to follow, which makes the screen black and white and has you catch a "shadowy mystery" person. Your base and spacesuit now have customisation options as well, letting you give them various different skins.

On top of the new content are other ways to play the game, including a Relax Mode, which comes with "calmer survival mechanics and less time pressure". It's recommended to play this way if you want to focus on the story. There's then a Photo Mode and a new kind of save system that gives you "more control over your branching decisions".

This new content only works to improve a sci-fi survival experience we called "tense, thrilling, [and] thoughtful" in our 8/10-rated The Alters PS5 review. "The Alters is 11 Bit Studios' magnum opus; a tense, thrilling, thoughtful game that makes you question what kind of person you want to be."
