Joseph Cross, the art director on Bungie's upcoming shooter Marathon, has announced his resignation from the company.
Originally reported by Kotaku, Cross has now made this move official with a brief statement on social media:
This comes just after Marathon's recent reintroduction following heavy criticism from early playtests.
Having implemented feedback from the community, fans are looking much more favourably on the sci-fi extraction shooter.
Marathon has a very distinct art style, with lots of stark colouring punctuating its gritty sci-fi universe. Cross, who spearheaded the direction for its striking look, leaves Bungie a few months before its launch in March 2026.
We imagine that much of his work is done at this stage of development, but it's also important to remember the art-related scandal that may have influenced his decision to step away.
Earlier this year, it was discovered that the game prominently featured the work of an independent artist without permission.
This has since been resolved, with the plagiarised work removed and replaced with original art, but it took its toll on the reputation of the game and Bungie itself.
Cross looked particularly deflated during a livestream in which the studio addressed the issue.
Anyway, it seems things are looking brighter for Marathon at this stage, and its art director will be "enjoying playing the game as a fan" in the new year.

Now before people dog pile on him, just remember the whole art raiders scandal happened before he even got the job at Bungie, just thought you would like to know that
This isn't a great look for the game = I'm sure they got a great offer somewhere and took all the events that happened very personally, but maybe a leader should stay until a project is shipped to do right by everyone.
@Oram77 A balanced and reasoanble comment on the internet... what's wrong with you! Outrage dammit!
"I'll be enjoying playing the game as a fan"
Something tells me he won't LUL
@SeanOhOgain I don’t really agree. His role as art director is basically complete now.
Of course they will need to refill the position for live service work, but I think it’s fine for him to step aside at this stage if that’s what he wants.
(I’m sure the scandal took a lot out of him to be honest.)
He loves the game and still shares Marathon related things on social media all the time. The reaction of people to the stolen art situation had a large negative effect on him and his mental health presumably.
Poor guy took the brunt of hate on something he had no control over. Hopefully his next endeavor is less controversial.
A open beta would do really good for this game
This game is doa in my opinion but we'll see.
@LifeGirl Not so sure about that anymore, the comments on the latest ViDoc for the game are actually quite positive.
@HaveTheSauce I agree, this game isn’t for me but it’d be great to show off the improvements that won over the recent fans. At the very least, it’ll stop people wishing the worst on the game.
@HaveTheSauce There will be a preview weekend before the game launches, that is confirmed
I played the closed beta and it was really good. It’s pretty solid, definitely doesn’t deserve the hate. I don’t understand some gamers sometimes. Complain about no games and then want games to die as soon as they release.
@T-Bone09 I think since the boom of social media, it "pays" to be more negative and hatrid about everything, Obviously there can still be valid criticism they tend to get lost in the cesspool...
