Expedition 33 Breaks The Game Awards Record for Most Gongs in a Single Show 1

There was a sense of inevitability to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 setting a new record for The Game Awards last night. It took home nine of host Geoff Keighley’s ostentatious statues in the end.

The release won virtually every gong it was nominated for, only missing out on the Best Audio Design trophy, which rightfully went to Battlefield 6. (And honestly, could have just as easily gone to ARC Raiders or Silent Hill F as well).

In fact, in the category of Best Performance it was largely competing against itself, with Jennifer English’s Maelle triumphing, despite Ben Starr’s Verso and Charlie Cox’s Gustave also being nominated.

Here’s all nine awards French dev Sandfall Interactive won on the night:

As we mentioned above, this sets a new The Game Awards record, comfortably beating out previous record setter The Last of Us: Part 2, which won seven.

Of course, Expedition 33 has been helped tremendously by its categorisation as an indie game here, despite it being published by Kepler Interactive. That allowed it to win the Best Indie Game and Best Debut Indie game categories, which Naughty Dog’s survival horror sequel wasn’t nominated for.

The debate will obviously continue to rage about what constitutes an “indie” game these days, but beyond that, we can’t really argue with any of Expedition 33’s wins.

While we feel many of the categories were strong – a lot of great games released in 2025 – few captured the imagination quite like Sandfall Interactive’s turn-based RPG.

Therefore, we reckon the team’s worthy of its record-breaking success – and it even decided to treat us with a free update, available now.
