Remakes of older video games generate double the money than remasters, research conducted over the past two years has revealed.
Ampere Analysis examined 15 remakes and 27 remasters between January 2024 and September 2025, and discovered that spending worldwide is, on average, 2.2x higher on remakes compared to remasters. During the stated timeframe, it's said 72.4 million PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam users collectively spent $1.4 billion on remakes and remasters. When the total is broken down, spending is weighted heavily in favour of a full remake.
Of course, remakes such as Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill 2, and Demon's Souls are generally priced higher than remasters, as they "require substantially higher investment in development, marketing, and time", Ampere Analysis notes. In comparison, remasters "offer faster turnaround and lower cost — but generally deliver less engagement".
Katie Holt, a senior analyst with the research company, said: "As games and IP development costs escalate, publishers are increasingly raiding their back catalogues for cost-effective remakes and remasters." When deciding which route to take, a developer has to balance "franchise planning, investment risk, age of content, platform support, and more".
During the given time period, Oblivion Remastered was the biggest of any remake or remaster, attracting seven million players and $180 million in spending, according to the conducted research. Ampere Analysis has the Bethesda game marked as a remaster, but the project went beyond a standard graphics overhaul with a new engine and gameplay improvements.
It's also claimed Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Silent Hill 2 were two of the most successful remakes, from January 2024 to September 2025.

Remakes are great when they are needed to re introduce the game to a new generation of gamers. Remakes and Remasters of games 10 years old are pointless whereas games like Trails in the Sky and FF7 getting Remakes makes sense.
Also just because people spend more on remakes doesn't mean they are more profitable, as remakes cost way more to develop than remasters.
But I was told no one likes remakes, they couldn't possibly be wrong again right....?
Edit: https://www.pushsquare.com/forums/ps_general_discussion/what_game_do_you_want_remade use this forum if you want to talk about what games you would like to get remade/remastered
Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and Sonic Unleashed.
I am getting to the point where I’ll only buy a remaster if I really love the game now. I’d greatly prefer remakes, though I’d even more greatly prefer new games. A remake has to feel different for me to really like it, I guess. I love the FF7 games and the REmakes, for sure.
But, man, Oblivion was so boring this year because it was exactly the same game with a new coat of paint. That said, I’m also torn about MGS Delta, if I’m being honest. Love MGS 3, but it felt like I’ve done it to death already too. It was too close to the source material and safe.
@Scottdevine53 those games definitely need full on remakes. The player control/camera control is horrendous in all of the titles you mentioned and a complete overhaul to where those systems aren’t broken jank would do them a world of good.
Definitely prefer full remake. Sony has so many game that they can remake it's insane. God of war alone would sale over 10 million easily. Really just shows me how Herman is bad at his job.
I prefer original sound and graphics just with updated controls.
Most remasters look awful to me. If it's not a proper remake, it's really not worth my time
This seems like the most obvious news
I really don't think we need any senior analysis into this
@Americansamurai1 hes useless same as the pathetic Jim Ryan was them 2 coudnt organise a pee up in a brewery. they are about as useful as a chocolate fireguard
I honestly like both and would prefer the original remaster be packaged along with a new Remake.
It does not make any sense to generalize it.
There are amazing remakes and awful ones. Same as, good and shameful remasters.
How can you ask, you prefer remakes or remasters?
It does not make any sense.
But if you insist, our answer is very simple:
"We prefer, perfect remakes and perfect remasters... We do not prefer failed ones"
I like both remakes and remasters. Remakes are great to experience a game in a new way, kinda like FF7 Remake or even RE4 Remake with it's new mechanics and extra content.
I also like remasters cause they bring a game to modern platforms with a few QoL enhancements.
On that note, bring Demon Souls Remake to PC and Bloodborne Remaster to modern consoles/PC you cowards! yells at clouds
Remakes all the time for me. Demons souls remake is stunning and I have to admit I'm finding it hard to think of any remakes that are that good. I've enjoyed remasters (dark souls,NFS hot pursuit) to name a couple but it's really remakes that get my attention more.
I was surprised by the title, „generating money“ sounds to me like „making profit“. In the text it is clarified that it‘s about revenue, and that both options can be financially very attractive due to much lower development costs for remasters.
@Northern_munkey
Demon‘s Souls is an interesting example for a remake. I‘d argue that it’s the most radical form of a remaster, because the graphics got a massive overhaul, while the game logic and the world geometry were preserved. Definitely an edge case.
@Dan12836666 really makes you wonder what this gen would have look like if layden and Shu would have stayed in control.
I much prefer full remakes, such as the Resident Evil games where the experience is fundamentally different to the original. Remasters of games from last gen which are perfectly playable on modern hardware are pointless to me, though I'm not against them for older games to make them accessible on modern hardware (unless they're slapping in in Unreal engine)
I prefer remaster over remake.
Not saying i'm against remake because some remake was great. But when comes to remake, usually the artstyle and gameplay ended up so different compare to the original game. While remaster usually the artstyle and gameplay are still intact.
Take MGS Delta for example. The artstyle has different vibe like a lot more cleaner / modern compare to the original game who had yellow'ish filter to give that 1960's / Cold War era vibe. And then Delta gameplay became less challenging because Konami added modern control like aim-assist, over the shoulder aiming, full strafing, crouch walking, and CQC counter but foolishly they didn't update enemies A.I to adapt with the new control / mechanic.
so tired of these remakes. It's just them cutting costs and using AI to double dip at the expense of creativity and new ideas. Make no mistake this is all about turning a profit with as little effort and investment as possible for most.
RE 4 remake is the last one I will ever buy, and I only got that because i never played the original so for me it was entirely fresh. However, this is getting out of hand.
Definitely prefer remakes over remasters👀
Destroy all humans 1 & 2 remakes
Final fantasy 7 remakes
The crash bandicoot insane trilogy remakes
Persona 3 Reload
And many others as well😌
I'm selfish and want both. I love going back to the original games to get the nostalgia for it, and realize how much of my gaming talent has suffered LOL! But I also love the remakes that take what was already a great game and make it even better, and update it for the time. Here's to hoping Konami starts remaking Castlevania games!
@Americansamurai1 yes exactly well hopefully things will improve now a bit at least anyway
@Dan12836666 we can only hope. 2026 looks to be a great year.
Meanwhile, at Bluepoint games...
I feel like this fact is a no-brainer and common sense. People like shiny new things that remind them of their favorite past games. It makes so much more sense to invest a little bit more and make the old thing new again. People have a hard time adapting backwards, but nostalgia is such a strong emotion that can easily be leveraged for lots of moneys.
Remakes and remasters are the absolute worst thing to happen to gaming.
@Max_the_German I disagree entirely. Having played the original on the ps3 and then diving into the ps5 remake was like playing a brand new game. The physics were superior, the controls were refined and sharper..look buddy its as good as remakes are going to get. I respect your opinion but I still think you are so wrong.
Something that people who are against all the remakes fail to understand is, the OG Demon's Souls for example came out in 2009. So the kid born right when that game came out, is 16 now. And if he/she is a gamer, of course they would rather experience the remake with updated visuals, rather then play the dated ps3 version.
Remasters make the MOST money because they require the LEAST amount of work/effort. Most are just ports of the OG to newer hardware with just the settings tweaked - was capped at 720/30, now playable at 4k/120, had a selection of 'low/medium' settings, now mostly Ultra with a few set to high...
A 'remake' is built from the ground up, all new Assets, all new Animations and coding etc.
I won't buy an old game unless it brings something new to the experience. Some extra depth, adress some of the criticisms of the old, bring it up to date in terms of Game-play - not just visuals, add depth or more background - make it as if being made for the first time for 'modern' gamers without the restrictions/limitations of 'old' hardware.
Just because Publishers make more money from doing the least amount of work, doesn't mean that they'll make any money from me...
If you are going to do it, then completely remake it. Modern resolution, frame rate, controls etc.
I prefer new games and new ips. Buying entries into series over 3 games deep 80-90% of the time end up diminishing returns.
I bought neither of those IPs or remakes so I don't count.
Even then people seeing something with more work done into it is cool, some chances work, others don't. They feel new enough or people have never played them or have an older version. It works.
People's expectations are high so a remaster if too old only works for a niche audience not just niche games.
I hate modern games so to me a remake or any AAA IP I don't already care for doesn't convince me anymore then they already didn't.
If an Indie or AAA/AA has a decent angle sure. Most don't so I don't support them.
I do other less notable Indies with fair ideas, remasters or ports of old games left behind or emu them if 'really' left behind.
The rest I ignore. They play boringly or are repeated of re-releases a lot so why would I contribute to them?
I think the general concensus is if remakes or remasters are done right(retaining the look and feel while adding some qol features and improving performance, or adding new content to expand the original's IF it's the original devs). That's great, changing the atmosphere and sound or feel of a game is risky and downright disrespectful imo if it's not the original devs. Looking at you, bluepoint. Those mocapped animations and art style changes are embarrassing in Demon's Souls.
One that blew me away was
Wonderboy : the dragon's trap
Indicated as a remake, though everything is the same as the original except the completely remade graphics, animation, music etc.
You can still switch on the spot from the remake to the original in game.
Made me appreciate just how far ahead and timeless the game design was, it feels like it could have been a moden game from the start.
Depends on the game and the studio remaking/remastering it.
But while Remakes may get 2.2x more revenue I suspect they cost at least 2.2x more to make in general.
There's also many games I likely never would have played without a remake / remaster. I missed Days Gone first time around or Spyro you can't play everything and this gave a second change.
I also loved replaying Demons' Souls, THPS, RE2-4, Shadow of the Colossus, Mass Effect, Skyrim and many more.
@MichaelNau Wonderboy the Dragon's Trap is a marvel. One of my favourite games growing up, and the remake was a delight.
