PUBG, the enduring Battle Royale which started the phenomenon, will end support for PS4 on 13th November.
From that point onwards, the game will only be playable on the PS5, where all your content and progress will be retained.
However, if you are planning to play on Sony’s new-gen system, you’ll be doing so at a lower resolution than on Microsoft’s machine.
New specifications revealed by PUBG Studios confirm that the base PS5 will target 1440p at 60fps, while the Xbox Series X aims for 2160p at 60fps. The PS5 Pro will also target 2160p at 60fps.
The small print notes that both the Xbox Series X and PS5 Pro will be using dynamic resolution, and it’s probably safe to assume the latter will hold a higher average than the former. But it’s unusual to see the base PS5 turn in a significantly lower resolution than its nearest rival.
While the Xbox Series X is technically a touch more powerful than the PS5, this rarely shows up in real-world performance – especially not in resolution gulfs like we’re seeing here.
One other downside for PS5 players is that any Trophies you’ve already earned on the PS4 will be reset.
“We explored various options with Sony Interactive Entertainment to make trophy transfer possible, but due to the large volume of related data, we confirmed that it is technically difficult to implement,” a spokesperson said. “We kindly ask for your understanding.”
On the plus side, PS Plus members will be able to claim an exclusive bundle, featuring Hunter’s Chests, Keys, and Contraband Coupons, as well as the Pixel Art Parachute, which was originally available when PUBG first launched on the PS4.
There’ll also be a Porsche collaboration to commemorate the release of v38.2, which is set to debut alongside the PS5 version. You can find our more about that, and the various patch notes for the latest edition of the game, through here.
